From Press Release

No.1 Penn State men’s lacrosse tops No. 20 Rutgers, 14-13, in a back-and-forth battle to take program’s first Big Ten title on Saturday afternoon at Panzer Stadium on Senior Day.

In a neck-and-neck matchup with Big Ten foe Rutgers, sophomore Jack Kelly sealed the deal, in the game that saw eight different lead changes, with less than a minute left in play finding the back of the net off an assist from redshirt junior Grant Ament (Haverford School). Kelly’s goal was his third of the game, paired with one assist for four points total.

Ament’s seven points on seven assists pushed him into the number one-spot on the Penn State’s single-season points leaderboard with 87, as well as the Big Ten lacrosse’s single-season assists record with 70

Junior Mac O’Keefe lead the Nittany Lions with five of the 14 goals in the game and two assists for a seven-point outing. O’Keefe now has 51 goals, tying the Penn State single season record, which he set in 2016.

Junior Colby Kneese came up huge for the Nittany Lions in crucial moments with 11 saves on the day. In his signature moment, with under two minutes on the clock, Kneese stuffed Rutgers attackman Adam Charalambides right on the doorstep of the goal to set up Penn State’s game-winning moment.

Sophomore Cole Willard and redshirt junior Dylan Foulds both added two goals to the Penn State effort while the freshmen duo of Jack Traynor (Malvern Prep) and TJ Malone (Haverford School) stepped up pitching in a goal each. Foulds also added two assists to the Nittany Lion effort.

Penn State starting defenders Brayden Peck (left) and Nick Cardile, both from Avon Grove, enjoy the moment

Senior classmates Nick Spillane and Chris Sabia (Haverford School) made the most of their senior day on the field. Spillane dished out one assist and Sabia had one caused turnover to accompany a ground ball.

Junior Gerard Arceri dominated the ‘x’ going 18-29 with 13 ground balls.

Junior Nick Cardile (Avon Grove) gobbled up four ground and had one caused turnover to help anchor the Nittany Lion defense. Sophomore Bobby Burns helped shutdown the Scarlet Knights offense adding three ground balls and one caused turnover.

Penn State took advantage of extra-man opportunities going three-for-three on the day.

Penn State ends the regular season at 12-1 and 5-0 in the Big Ten Conference for the first time in program history.

The Nittany Lions will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament hosted by Rutgers. More details will follow after the conclusion of the Maryland-Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse

Sowers (@UDcardsLax) sets Princeton scoring marks in defeat

From Press Release

When you break records held by Michael Sowers (Upper Dublin) and Kevin Lowe, you’ve accomplished something extraordinary.

Michael Sowers did both yesterday, in what unfortunately ended up being the final game of his junior season.

In the end, there would be no throwing the ball in anyone’s own goal or any of the other craziness related to tiebreakers. There’d just be a thrilling 14-13 Cornell win over Princeton on a goal with four seconds to go, as Sowers continued to rewrite the Princeton record book.

Michael Sowers (Photo by Patrick Tewey, Princeton Athletics)

On a late April day that began with snow showers in Ithaca, Sowers scored seven goals and added an assist, breaking the tie he’d spent seven days in with Lowe for the Princeton career record for points. Sowers also broke his own school record for points in a season and, with his second goal, became the first Princeton player and sixth Ivy League player to have at least 100 career goals and 100 career assists.

Princeton came into the game needing to win by at least three to clinch a spot the Ivy League tournament, and the Tigers led 12-10 with less than seven minutes to go. It put a very weird feel over Schoellkopf Field, where Princeton was up two but really down one in a practical sense.

The Tigers wouldn’t be able to stretch it to that three-goal lead, though, as Cornell came back to go up 13-12. Princeton tied it at 13-13 on Sowers’ final goal of the day with 1:26 left, but by then it was clear that Princeton would fall short of the three-goal margin it would need. Cornell’s Clarke Pettersen scored the winner with four seconds left off a great pass from Jeff Teat, and Princeton’s last chance ended with a save by Chayse Ierlan off Charlie Durbin’s shot after a face-off violation as time expired.

The loss did nothing to take away from the extraordinary game, season and career numbers that Sowers has put together.

His seven goals were a career high. His eight points gave him 90 for the year, best ever at Princeton, breaking the record of 83 he set a year ago, when he broke the record of 82 he set the year before that.

And his first goal gave him 248 career points, one better than the 247 Lowe scored before graduating in 1994. Sowers now has 255 career points, with 105 goals and 150 career assists.

Princeton rallied from down 6-3 to tie at 6-6 at the half, and the Tigers would have a pair of two-goal leads, the first of which was at 11-9 on a beautiful wraparound goal by Jake Stevens, assisted by Sowers.

In addition to Stevens, Princeton got one goal each from Durbin, Emmet Cordrey, Phillip Robertson (Duke’s LC) , Chris Brown and Luke Crimmins. Brown finishes his sophomore year with at least one goal in all 27 games of his career.

Cordrey’s goal was his 30th of the year, tripling his previous career total and giving Princeton three 30-goal scorers (Sowers with 37, Brown with 34 and Cordrey with 30) for the first time since Jesse Hubbard, Chris Massey and Josh Sims did it in 1998. Cordrey finished the year with 30 goals and 19 assists for 49 points after having 10 goals, three assists and 13 points his first three years combined.

Haverford School sweeps at GEICO Showcase; proves its among nation’s best teams

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/29/19

SOUTH HUNTINGTON, NY. – When The Haverford School has been at its best in years past, the Fords have relief on a collection of offensive weapons, rather than just one or two top scorers.

The 2015 national champion team had college All-Americans Grant Ament and Dox Aitken filling up the stat sheet, but also featured Drew Supinski Forry Smith, Phil Poquie and Brandon Shima to keep goalies busy. The 2015 team’s undefeated national champion predecessor included snipers like Carl Walrath, Hup Hupfeldt, Matt Walters, Brendan McGrath and Will McNamara.

Haverford School’s Chris Tsetsekos won 15 of 21 faceoffs (Photo by Matt Chandik)

Pick a great Haverford team, and you’ll find that defenses could never settle on taking away one player. If the past week for the Fords is any indicator, the 2019 team has championship-caliber talent, too.

Adam Salvaggio tallied a hat trick to go with an assist, Pearse Glavin chipped in a goal and two assists and Peter Garno and Gavin Burke each scored twice as Haverford finished an impressive sweep at the GEICO Showcase on Sunday at St. Anthony’s on Long Island by topping Lincoln-Sudbury (MA), 11-8. The Fords – the top-ranked team in the region by Phillylacrosse.com – also defeated defending New York state champion Ward Melville, 6-5, on a Mac Costin goal with 14 seconds left to play on Saturday.

“It’s awesome, especially having Mac and a combination of of Geordy (Holmes), Gavin and Jack (Leary) at midfield, because if I get the pole to start, Mac can get a short and score a couple goals and then I’ll have a short,” said Garno, a senior signed with Virginia. “The other team doesn’t know who to pole and who to zero in a lot of times, so it leaves a lot of stuff open.”

“It’s pretty cool because there’s a bunch of guys who can initiate, and as the season’s gone on, everyone’s stepped up and played in their roles,” Salvaggio added. “Some guy will be going off, then the next game it’ll be another guy, so it’s hard on the defense because they have to keep guessing who’s going to go off that day.

“Teams can either pole Peter or Mac and both of those guys are awesome middie dodgers and they kind of have to pick their poison there. We just have to go out and see who has the matchup that day and that’s just who you run it through.”

After beating Ward Melville, the Fords zipped home to go to prom, then came back to Long Island on Sunday morning. Despite the bus legs and general tiredness, they were the ones who came out red-hot, racking up an 8-2 lead vs. Lincoln-Sudbury on goals from seven different players. It was enough of a cushion to offset a late surge from L-S, and goalie Sage Garito was good when he had to be with eight saves.

Having a great offense is fun and all, but it’s irrelevant if nobody’s getting them the ball from the faceoff X. Chris Tsetsekos did the honors for Haverford, winning 15 of his 21 draws and corralling 10 ground balls to boot. He and sophomore Bobby Blewett (1-for-2) have been splitting draws lately, but it’s that kind of effort that can get you the starting job for good.

“I didn’t start this game, so it was a different look for the other faceoff guy today after taking a few faceoffs against Bobby Blewett,” Tsetsekos said. “I started taking the faceoffs, I got into a rhythm and things just took off from there.

“With this offense, it’s like, ‘make it, take it,’ every time I win a faceoff. I just know that any guy on our offense is capable of scoring, and when we work together, we’re unstoppable.”

The Fords – No. 11 in last week’s Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse Rankings – have won eight straight games after losing back-to-back games to the two top teams in the country in Culver Academy (Ind.) and Salisbury School (Conn.), and that includes a 3-0 mark in Inter-Ac play. They still have to play Germantown Academy and Episcopal Academy to round out the league slate before the playoffs, but by the looks of it, they’re rounding into the form that’s made them champions before (they have won or shared 7 of the past 10 titles) and that’s bad news for everyone else.

“Winning is an expectation at Haverford,” defenseman Ryan Niggeman said. “We have one of the hardest schedules in the country, maybe the hardest schedule, and it says a lot about the team’s perseverance and grit to get the job done day after day.”

Even after one of its craziest days.

From Press Release

For a second straight season, the Lehigh men’s lacrosse team placed six student-athletes on an All-Patriot League Team, as announced by the league on Monday. Junior Conor Gaffney (Lenape-NJ) was also named Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Year, Lehigh’s first major award winner since Dan Taylor was named Offensive Player of the Year in 2015.

Gaffney and senior Craig Chick were named to the first team while senior Lucas Spence (Springfield-Delco), juniors Andrew Eichelberger and Christian McHugh, and sophomore Teddy Leggett garnered second-team recognition.

Lehigh’s Conor Gaffney

Gaffney was named first team All-League for a second straight season, being named Faceoff Specialist of the Year for the first time. He has proven to be one of the top players at his position, currently standing No. 4 in the country with his 69.0 percentage (216-of-313).

Gaffney’s resume is impressive, now owning the Lehigh program record for groundballs in a game (16), season (currently 125) and career (currently 322). Against Robert Morris this season, he reached 16 GBs for the second time in his career, also winning a program-record 24 faceoffs (on just 29 attempts). Gaffney’s groundball totals for this season and his career are good for second and fourth in Patriot League history. His 216 faceoff wins are No. 2 in league history.

Garnering first team recognition for a third straight was defenseman Craig Chick. Chick leads the Mountain Hawks with 36 caused turnovers while adding 45 groundballs, third on the team.

Meanwhile, Spence garnered second team All-League for a second straight year. Despite missing two games due to injury, he still leads the Mountain Hawks in both points (48) and assists (26).

The Mountain Hawks enter the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 2 seed and have earned a bye into the semifinals. Lehigh will play in the second semifinal at Loyola’s Ridley Athletic Complex, with opening faceoff set for 8 p.m. The Mountain Hawks could face No. 3 Boston University, No. 4 Army West Point or No. 5 Holy Cross on Friday.

Haverford School coach Nostrant to take over as mentor at Baltimore’s Gilman School

John Nostrant, who built Haverford School into a national lacrosse power and is nearing 500 career wins, will take over as head coach at Baltimore power Gilman School next year, Gilman officials announced today.

Nostrant, in his 28th year as Fords coach, has 489 wins and two recent national championships (2011, 2015) in his illustrious resume. Nostrant notified his team this morning and will finish the season; currently Haverford is 14-3 and ranked among the top teams in the nation in all national polls (No. 1 by Phillylacrosse.com in the region).

John Nostrant

Nostrant has won 14 Inter-Ac championships at Haverford. He was the Phillylacrosse.com Coach of the Year in both 2011 and 2015 and the National Interscholastic Lacrosse Coaches Association (NILCA) Co-Coach of the Year for the 2015 season. He was inducted into the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2011.

Nostrant had announced last summer that this would be his last season at Haverford. Brendan Dawson, the former coach at Haverford College, was named as his successor and is serving as a top assistant coach this year under Nostrant.

“They knew I was going to coach somewhere so it was pretty easy,” Nostrant said of his meeting with the Haverford players. “They are happy (for me).

“They know I am all in here. I have a job to do. We have had a great season. They know my looking is over. To be honest, it’s a non-event as far as my approach (to coaching the rest of the year). It will be fun.”

Nostrant said he felt his Haverford team would be strong this year and that its stacked national schedule – arguably one of the toughest in the nation – would only help the Fords.

“I am really happy about what we’re doing at Haverford,” said Nostrant, whose team last week defeated mighty IMG Academy and then Ward Melville (NY) and Lincoln-Sudbury (MA) in the prestigious GEICO HS Challenge on Long Island. “That’s why we play the schedule we play. You have to come ready to play. We have big time players and they enjoy playing against other big time players. The schedule has been a great challenge and the guys like that challenge.”

Nostrant will succeed Brooks Matthews, who announced in November that this season would be his last after 15 years as Greyhounds head coach. Matthews led Gilman to MIAA ‘A’ Conference titles in 2009 and 2011.

“I am happy Gilman is trusting in me to run its lacrosse program and be a part of the community,”Nostrant said. “I can say Brooks Matthews is a friend of mine and it’s a phenomenal school. I have enjoyed competing against his teams and they have a great program and I just look forward that when the time is right, I will be getting to know the kids and hitting the ground running.

“I have a lot of ties in the Baltimore area. I graduated from Washington College and the Gioman School and its community felt like a great fit.”

Nostrant also is known for co-founding the Checking for Cancer tournament and helping create the #10VE events to honor the memory of Kip Taviano.

The hiring was first reported earlier today by Inside Lacrosse’s Ty Xanders.

Nostrant admitted he was unsure about his future for the past 10 months.

“I didn’t have expectations,” he said. “I didn’t know what I was going to do, whether it was being an assistant in college or a volunteer assistant. Or working up here outside of coaching.”

“I think, to be honest, I am so grateful and so blessed. Thank God it works; you trust things will work out. For my family it’s been stressful. I am excited.”

Nostrant also is director of Mesa Lacrosse, en elite Philly club program. He said the program will continue at the highest level and also may find a regional spot in Baltimore.

“Mesa is in great shape,” he said. “This will continue the Mesa brand. It keeps me in the game, actively engaged with college coaches. Mesa will still be strong in Philly and we will figure out what it may look like in Baltimore.”

How will Nostrant’s illustrious Philly career be viewed now that he will move to Baltimore?

“I guess time will tell,” Nostrant said. “I love Philly, I have worn the Philly badge and made relationships. The coaches are all in this thing together; we want to make Philadelphia lacrosse the best it could be for the public schools and the private schools. We have great coaches; I am going to miss those relationships. Some will continue, but I will have great relationships in Baltimore.”

The Letter sent out by Gilman School on his hiring:

Dear Gilman Community,

It is with great pleasure and excitement that we announce the appointment of Mr. John Nostrant as our next varsity lacrosse head coach, succeeding Mr. Brooks Matthews ’87. John will join the Gilman faculty this summer and will take the reins of the lacrosse program then. This announcement concludes a search that began this fall and kicked into high gear in the winter and spring. We would like to express our sincere thanks to all of the teachers, coaches, players, alumni, and parents involved in the process. Their input proved invaluable as we made our way through this important search.

John is currently the varsity lacrosse head coach at Haverford School, an independent boys’ school in Haverford, Pennsylvania. He joined the faculty and coaching staff at Haverford School and assumed the head coach position in 1991. In addition to his lacrosse duties, John was the director of athletics at Haverford for 22 years. Before Haverford, John served as the head lacrosse coach at St. Albans School in Washington, DC. He also served as an assistant coach for the USA U-19 world team, which won the gold medal in 2008. John began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Washington College. Additionally, John is the founder of John Nostrant Lacrosse Camps for youth boys and is the co-director of Mesa Lacrosse for girls and boys. John also organized the Checking for Cancer Lacrosse Tournament, which has raised money to support cancer research and families stricken by cancer.

John’s record of success is impressive. On the field, his teams have won more than 450 games and earned 13 Inter-Academic League (Inter-Ac) regular-season championships, four Inter-Ac tournament titles, and two state championships (2000 and 2005). Two of John’s Haverford teams (2011 and 2015) finished their seasons undefeated and ranked #1 nationally, and he was named National High School Coach of the Year in 2015. Along the way, John has coached 36 high school All-Americans. Beyond the records and accolades, John has won the hearts of his players and the respect of his peers and colleagues—a fact that stood out to us in the selection process. No stranger to boys’ education, he is committed to supporting Gilman’s mission to educate the whole boy in mind, body, and spirit, using lacrosse as a vehicle to that end.

A 1986 graduate of Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, John holds a Bachelor of Arts in History, where he was an All-American lacrosse player and team captain. In addition, John holds a Master’s in Education/Principal Certification from Cabrini University in Radnor, Pennsylvania.

Once our respective seasons are complete, John will arrange to visit Gilman so that he can start getting to know all of us better. In the meantime, please join us in congratulating John on this appointment. We look forward to welcoming him, his wife Gina, and their three children (Olivia, 22; John, 20; and Marcella, 18) to Gilman starting this summer.

Of course, there is plenty of lacrosse still to play this season, and we wish Brooks and the Greyhounds a terrific finish. Go Hounds!

Penn’s Murphy named Ivy League Coach of the Year as third-ranked Quakers gear for league tourney

From Press Release

A run to the program’s first undefeated Ivy League season since 1984, Penn’s fifth overall Ivy League title and the school’s first since 1988 has earned the University of Pennsylvania’s James H. Greene Head Coach of Men’s Lacrosse Mike Murphy his first-ever Ivy League Coach of the Year selection.

Mike Murphy

A unanimous choice by his fellow head coaches, Murphy has led the Quakers to a 9-3 overall record and a 6-0 run through the Ivy League season. After starting the 2019 season with three consecutive losses, the Quakers turned it around to the tune of nine consecutive wins – tied for the longest-active streak in the nation and Penn’s longest since winning nine in a row over parts of the 1964-65 seasons and tied for second-longest behind the 1984 team’s 12-game streak.

Murphy and the Quakers have earned the No. 1 seed in this weekend’s Ivy League Tournament, the first time in the 10-year history of the event that Penn will enters as the top seed. The Red and Blue have now qualified for seven Ivy League Tournaments under Murphy, including each of the last four.

With his nine wins this season, Murphy now ranks No. 2 all-time in wins by a Penn head coach, trailing only Tony Seaman (1983-90) who won 74 games during his time in University City. Murphy has 32 career wins inside the Ivy League, also trailing only Seaman (35) among Penn head coaches. The Quakers have been .500 or above in Ivy play in eight of Murphy’s 10 seasons at the helm, including each of the last seven.

Penn’s rise this season has resulted in a No. 3 national ranking in both the USILA Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. After entering the season unranked in the USILA Coaches Poll, the Quakers have risen to tie the program record for highest-ever national ranking. The only other time Penn has been ranked as high as No. 3 was in 1984 when the Quakers held that spot for the final two weeks.

The Red and Blue take on Brown in the semifinals of the 2019 Ivy League Tournament on May 3. Opening faceoff with the Bears is set for 6 p.m. at Columbia’s Kraft Stadium in New York City.
