Atillasoy (Harriton) scores 9 goals to set Ursinus record in 20-11 win over Muhlenberg

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/25/19
From Press Release

For the nearly two decades that men’s lacrosse has been a sport at Ursinus, no player had been able to score more than six goals in a game until Peter DeSimone netted seven a week and a half ago. Wednesday night at Muhlenberg, Hakan Atillasoy (Harriton) put down a marker that could take a long time to match.

Hakan Atillasoy

Atillasoy went buck wild with a ruthless display of pin-point sniping, pouring in a school-record nine goals on just 11 shots to lead the 13th-ranked Bears back into the Centennial Conference playoffs with a 20-11 victory over the Mules. The sophomore’s historic effort was part of an avalanche of 11 unanswered goals spanning around the midway point of the second quarter to the midway point of the third as Ursinus turned a 6-5 deficit into a runaway rout.

Junior Bobby McClure (Haverford High) added four goals and two assists for the Bears (11-2, 5-2), who can do no worse than the number three seed in the conference tournament with a win over Dickinson on Saturday.

Atillasoy had a hat trick halfway through the first quarter, scoring three times to help the Bears to an early 5-1 lead.

The Mules (10-5, 3-4), still nursing playoff hopes of their own, flipped the momentum with a stretch of five goals in a row – two of them from James Dalimonte – to go up 6-5 with 10:47 to play in the second quarter. After that, Ursinus flipped a switch.

McClure tied the game at 6-6 on a feed from freshman Tre Tillman before Atillasoy scored back-to-back unassisted goals, the second of which was succeeded 16 seconds later by another from McClure. Junior Evan Scott’s (Upper Dublin) goal at the 4:46 mark made it 10-6 and lifted the Bears into the break with all of the momentum and a four-goal edge.

Ursinus left the Mules in the dust from the opening faceoff of the third quarter. Senior Brian Casey (Haverford School) won the draw and quickly fed ahead to McClure for a snap shot and a goal seven seconds into the second half, and Atillasoy came from behind the net for a wrap-around goal 13 ticks later.

Atillasoy then ignited one of three sequences in which the Bears scored goals less than 15 seconds apart, using a fake to free himself for a side-armed rocket on a man advantage to tie DeSimone’s mark with 11:31 remaining. Just 13 ticks later, Tillman picked up a loose ball off the faceoff and sprinted ahead for a quick shot into the back of the cage for his first collegiate goal.

After Scott dodged his man and roofed a lefty shot past Muhlenberg goalie Garrett Pope, Atillasoy broke the single-game record in remarkably simple fashion. After DeSimone helped force a turnover on a failed clear, the senior used a quick re-start to find Atillasoy all alone in front of the crease, and the sophomore had an easy task to dump the ball into the twine for his eighth of the night and a 16-6 lead with 8:52 on the third-quarter clock.

Atillasoy’s ninth was another easy one, as he poked the ball away from Pope on a clearing attempt and finished into an empty net to make it 18-10 midway through the fourth quarter. Seven seconds after that, freshman Tommy Reinhart scored off a feed from Casey directly following the senior’s win at the X.

After Ursinus conceded 13 of 18 faceoffs in the first half, Casey’s individual turnaround helped the Bears put Muhlenberg away. Casey wound up going 14-for-27 overall, scooping seven ground balls and dishing out two assists.

Senior Alex Middleman and junior Noah Frantz (Strath Haven) caused two turnovers apiece in front of senior Nick Kirk, who made 15 saves.

The Bears racked up 52 shots and put 20 of them past Pope, who came in leading the conference in goals-against average and save percentage.

Ursinus wraps up the regular season on Saturday, when the Bears honor their seniors prior to taking on the 15th-ranked Red Devils.

La Salle’s Leahy is first boys’ coach to reach 500 wins as Explorers topple SJ Prep

Staff Report

Tony Resch was head coach at Penn Charter when Bill Leahy launched the La Salle College High lacrosse program from scratch in 1992. Resch said he had a suspicion that Leagy would have success.

“We knew each other from (playing on) the Wings and the first few years we’d scrimmage each other,” said Resch, who came to La Salle as an assistant to Leahy in 2003. “His first kids were absolutely brand new to lacrosse, but it was crystal clear each year that he would be successful.”

Leahy has indeed fulfilled that prediction by Resch, considered himself to be one of the premier coaches from the region.

Today at Brady Field, Leahy’s Explorers thumped host St. Joseph’s Prep. 10-1, giving Leahy his 500th career win, the first boys’ coach from Philly to reach the milestone (Radnor girls coach Phyllis Kilgour had 574 wins). According to statistics compiled by LaxRecords, Leahy is the 19th boys’ coach in the country to reach 500 wins.

La Salle’s Bill Leahy (center) is flanked by teammates and assistant coaches after his 500th career victory today vs. St. Joseph’s Prep

Leahy, in his 28th year, is 500-110 overall with 22 Catholic League titles and four states titles. The Explorers – who got four goals from Shane Osborne and solid goaltending from Christian Suter (8 saves) – are 8-4 overall this year and 8-0 in the Catholic League.

“When I came over to La Salle when I loved his consistency and his care and his knowledge as well as his ability to literally build a program from scratch,” Leahy said. “To do anything for that long is a fantastic accomplishment.

“The kids recognzie how much he gives to them not just as lacrosse players. Talk about longevity – this year he is coaching the son of a player he coached. To year-in and year-out produce really good teams; I’d like to think it starts with his leadership and playing the game the right way.”

“His players have respect for the game and respect for the opponent and that’s 100 percent due to his stewardship. La Salle is an equal partner in this and the school is so supportive. I coulnd’t be happier with his accomplishment.”

The players learned late in the game of the 500th win. Leahy, never one to relish in honors – and he has been inducted in every significant Hall of Fame in the region – did receive a water shower and many hugs.

What made it more special was defeating The Prep, the team’s arch-rival.

“They have given us some unbelievable wars in the past so it was nice to have a win over our arch rival be such a milestone win,” Resch said. “It certainly adds to the excitement and pride. For Bill it was a nice icing on a great day.”

Shootout for Soldiers Philadelphia, starts Wednesday, June 26 at 4pm and runs for 24 hours until 4pm June 27 at the Episcopal Academy.
*Registration and Information – https://shootoutforsoldiers.com/events/philadelphia-2019/
SFS Philadelphia raised over $100,000 last year – a level that no other location has ever done in its second year. Can Philly overtake Baltimore and Long Island for the top spot this year?
The goal is to have 2 adjacent fields running simultaneously for 24 hours. There will be a festival atmosphere with food trucks, music, family activities and, of course, lots of lacrosse. Teams can be traditional and non-traditional. Examples of non-traditional teams; All Goalie Team, Father/Son game, Switch sticks, Costume, and alumni teams are just a few types.
SFS Philly is looking for volunteers to reach out and solicit team participation which is the key to SFS Philly success. Anyone interested, please connect with Chris Bates at cbates@episcopalacademy.org. Also, if you know of a business/company that would like to learn about sponsorship or partnering opportunities with Shootout For Soldiers, reach out to Gabby Steinhardt, Director of Business Development at gabby@shootoutforsoldiers.com or (410) 800-0580 x708.

The 19th Katie Samson Festival set for Saturday at Radnor; event features 27 games

From Press Release

The KSF (Katie Samson Foundation) Lacrosse Festival will be celebrating its 19th year this weekend! The KSF Lacrosse Festival began in 2001 and has grown into the premier high school lacrosse event in the United States.

Katie Samson

This year’s festival will be held on Saturday April 27 at Radnor High School, and will be the LARGEST single-day high school lacrosse festival in the country with 54 varsity teams (26 premier boys’ teams and 28 premier girls’ teams on six fields running simultaneously), wheelchair rugby, tennis and basketball games, youth games, 20+ vendors, 10,000+ fans, 50+ major sponsors and 2 FanZones with rides, bounces, rock walls, face painting, BBQ, funnel cakes, raffle prizes, clothing, equipment etc., and a special guest appearance from the Phillie Phanatic! Games begin at 9:00 am. This is a family event!

The Katie Samson Foundation gives back! Over $100,000 was raised in 2018 with the generous support of over 50 sponsors, donations from attendees, as well as fundraising efforts by each participating lacrosse team. Since 2001 over $1.9 million has been distributed to charities benefiting medical research and providing care for people with spinal cord injuries – patient care (46 percent), research (43 percent), and quality of life (11 percent).

The Event:

Motivated by Katie’s perseverance and courage, volunteers in the lacrosse community and beyond support the cause year after year.

The Highlights:

  • 27 premier boys’ and girls’ league-sanctioned regular season games and several youth team games
  • The Fest offers these athletes an opportunity to experience a unique community spirit of giving while competing in a challenging sporting event.
  • Six fields running simultaneously from 9am to 5pm.
  • Over 10,000 attendees
  • Disabled athletes demonstrating wheelchair tennis, basketball and rugby games.
  • Families from all over the mid-Atlantic region will be enjoying games, rides, boutiques, face-painters, balloon artists, great raffle prizes, plenty of food and of course, great lacrosse. There will be two FanZones which will have “Katie’s Kiddie Korner” for younger fans- with clowns and balloon designs, a Mechanical Bull, Rock Climbing Wall, moon bounces, music, and a visit from the Phillie Phanatic!
  • Food vendors in each Fan Zone.
  • Boutiques in both Fan Zones guarantee a shopping opportunity for all – including the latest lacrosse clothing and gear at great Fest prices.

The Cause:

KSF raises money for research to identify a cure for spinal cord injuries and to optimize care and quality of life for spinal cord patients. The foundation also promotes social awareness as the lacrosse community comes together to support the festival. Through Katie’s courage and perseverance, her foundation has successfully raised funds to support spinal cord injury research and rehabilitation programs that provide much needed independence and quality of life improvements for those with spinal cord injuries.

Katie Samson – The Inspiration:

Katie Samson grew up in Wayne, PA and attended Radnor High School where she was a goalkeeper for the girls’ lacrosse team. Katie went on to study Art History at Middlebury College where she also played Division III lacrosse and helped her team capture a National Championship in 1999. The following winter, Katie’s suffered a spinal cord injury while sledding and became a quadriplegic.

After months of rehabilitation and encouragement from family and friends, Katie went back to finish her degree and help coach her college lacrosse team to two more National titles. In 2004, Katie moved to Arizona to pursue her graduate degree where she remained for six years. Katie moved back to the Philadelphia area in 2010 and became an active member of the Katie Samson Foundation.

Katie loves traveling, exploring accessible trails and spending time with her nieces and nephews. Katie recently became Director of Programs for Art-Reach, an art services organization that create, advocates and expands accessible opportunities in arts and culture. Find her on the wall of the most recent inductee class of the Radnor High School Hall of Fame.

Event Details:

The high school games will begin at 9:00am on Saturday, April 27th. All of the games will be played at Radnor High School. The festival website, www.katiesamsonlaxfest.com, has an amazing inspirational video, the full schedule (see below) as well as all the other exciting details. Or visit us on Facebook – KSF Lacrosse Festival. A $10 ($5 for students/under 3 is free!) admission fee allows unlimited access to all activities and rides within the two Fan Zones.

Supporting the festival offers an opportunity to do something meaningful and historic to impact the lives of people affected by spinal cord injuries. The Katie Samson Foundation is a 501©3 corporation. All donations are tax deductible. Please visit our website or contact the Directors of Development, Eric Gorman at KSFlacrossefest@gmail.com with any questions.

Katie Samson Festival: Malvern Prep blitzes Manheim Township, 16-2

There was plenty of buildup as defending Inter-Ac League champion Malvern Prep geared for its meeting this morning with defending PIAA Class AAA champ Manheim Township at the 19th Annual Katie Samson Festival.

But from the start, the marquee battle on Radnor High’s football Stadium (Prevost Field) was a rout between the No. 2 and No. 4 teams in the Phillylacrosse Rankings.

Malvern Prep (No. 2) scored 15 seconds into play and built a 12-1 halftime lead before coasting to a 16-2 victory. The Friars have won five straight and improved to 10-5. Manheim – already with wins over District 1 powers Conestoga and Avon Grove and the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1 title in hand – fell to 13-2.

Will Pettit

The Friars dominated every aspect of the game; groundballs, faceoffs (Rowan Almonte was 14 of 21), goaltending (starter Will Pettit had 8, 13 overall) and ball movement. Manheim also was plagued by turnovers, forced and unforced.

“We’ve kind of been building up recently and getting hot which is awesome to see,” said Pettit, a North Carolina signee. “We started the season slow. We were young and we lost a lot of guys on offense so it was tough bulding up. Now we are hitting a hot streak and getting to be a lot of fun to watch.

“We knew they were the defending state champions, and that we had somegthing to prove to them. It was kind of like the best of the best.”

Sophomore Eric Spanos led a balanced attack with four goals while junior Colin McGill had three and sophomore Nick Potemski had two goals and an assist. Junior Colin Hueston and senior Evan Lotz each scored twice and soph Will Peden had a goal and two assists.

Sean Curcio and Tyler Kurtz scored for the Blue Streaks, who have won 105 straight league games and again have established themselves as a PIAA favorite out of Distict 3.

“They have a great team and we had a couple guys banged up,” said Township coach Dan Lyons. “They gave us a great game and one for us to learn a lot. That always helps.

“They get a lot more off ball motion than some of the other teams we play. That will help us improve our defense off the ball.”

Malvern Prep’s last three losses were by one goal, to New Jersey powers Seton Hall Prep and Delbarton, as well as Inter-Ac rival Haverford School. The Friars appear to be peaking with the post-season only weeks away.

“We are hitting our stride,” said Pettit, “and I am excited to see excited to watch us go forward.”

From Press Release

The University of Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse team closed the 2019 regular season with its ninth consecutive win, downing Vermont, 12-10, in the IMLCA Game of the Week at Wilton High School.

A pair of Sam Handley goals in the final 6:17 of play broke a 10-10 tie and extended the nation’s longest winning streak as No. 5 Penn improved to 9-3 overall. Handley finished with five points, scoring four goals and adding an assist. His third goal of the game gave the Quakers an 11-10 lead just 28 seconds after the Catamounts had tied the game. He would add insurance with an extra-man goal with 4:02 remaining.

Adam Goldner

Junior Adam Goldner (Malvern Prep) had two goals in the game, setting a Penn record for goals in a season with 46. The previous mark was 44 set by John Shoemaker in 1987.

Notes To Know
This was the first-ever meeting between Penn and Vermont in men’s lacrosse.
The Quakers have now won nine games in a row, tied with Penn State for the longest active winning streak in Division I lacrosse.
Nine wins in a row is tied for the second-longest winning streak all-time by a Penn team, trailing only the 1984 team that won 12 in a row. The Quakers also won nine in a row in 1964-65.
Penn’s 12 goals scored are the fewest scored in a Penn win this season.
Adam Goldner (46g, 7a) and Sam Handley (31g, 22a) are tied for the team lead with 53 points – each is now tied for No. 10 all-time in points in a season by a Quaker.
Simon Mathias had a goal and two assists to extend the nation’s longest active goal-scoring streak to 32 and the nation’s second-longest point-scoring streak to 55 – every game of his career.
Mathias is No. 4 all-time at Penn in goals (108) and assists (176).
Goldner now ranks No. 9 all-time at Penn in goals with 85. He has a goal in 21 consecutive games.
Kyle Gallagher was 18-for-24 on faceoffs, including a 13-for-14 performance in the first half. He added 13 ground balls and scored Penn’s first goal of the game just 0:09 after the Catamounts had taken a 1-0 lead.
Reed Junkin made 10 saves, seven of which came in the second half. Penn is 8-1 this season in games where Junkin’s save percentage is .500 or above.

Freshman David Closterman (Academy of the New Church) had four goals for Vermont.

How It Happened.
The Quakers have been a fast starting team this season, and continued that tradition with a 5-2 lead after 15:00 of play. The Catamounts scored first, but the Red and Blue countered with five consecutive goals to take a 5-1 lead. Gallagher scored just 0:09 after Vermont took the lead, then Goldner scored his record-breaker 0:43 after to give Penn its first lead.

The Quakers went quick-strike again to extend their lead, Joe Licciardi and Sam Handley scoring 0:35 apart midway through the first quarter followed by Goldner’s second of the game two minutes later.

In the second quarter, the two teams traded goals with each netting three. Penn’s three goals came from its starting midfield line as Handley, Tyler Dunn and Mitch Bartolo each scored unassisted goals. Vermont would find momentum with a goal right before halftime as Dawes Milchling scored with 0:07 left.

Milchling would then open the second half with an extra-man goal 2:15 into the third quarter. Vermont would ultimately go on a 6-2 run to tie the game, finally pulling even via a Jack Knight goal with 6:45 to play.

The Quakers would not let the catamounts regain the lead. Gallagher won the ensuing faceoff and Handley would fire home a goal to give Penn an 11-10 lead just 0:38 after Vermont levelled the game. Junkin would make a big stop on Sal Iaria with 5:19 remaining, sending Penn in transition which ultimately led to a slashing penalty on Vermont and an EMO for the Quakers. Handley would then score 0:19 into the one-minute penalty and give Penn all the lead it would need.

Vermont had chances in the final minutes, but Junkin made one final save with 3:13 left and BJ Farrare caused a turnover with 0:46 remaining that stalled out Vermont’s final try.

The Quakers will play Brown in the semifinals of the 2019 Ivy League Tournament at Columbia. The semifinals are set for 6 p.m. on May 3 on ESPNU.
