.@THEDUKESLC announces All-time Goalies to celebrate 20th anniversary

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/22/19
From Press Release

The Duke’s Lacrosse Club is pleased to continue its 20th Anniversary Celebration by announcing its All-Time Goalies.

There have been many noteworthy goalies in the Duke’s Program over its 20 years and many have excelled at the high school and college/pro levels. Similar to other positions, choosing the First Team was difficult, but here they are:

From left, Niko Amato, Caton Johnson, Matt McMonagle, Drew Adams

Leading off is Niko Amato. He was a player made for the big time and made for big time moments. He was a cartoon character of sorts, always joking and having fun probably to hide his burning desire to be the best.
He studied his craft partly under the great Brian “Doc” Dougherty and he excelled creating his own legacy with his own unique style. From winning two State Championships at La Salle College High School (earning Phillylacrosse.com Player of the Year in 2008) to winning National Club Championships with Duke’s, Amato did it all at the high school level.
He went on to be a 4-year starter, 3-time All-American and Defensive Player of the year at the University of Maryland. Amato currently is a goalkeeper in the MLL with the Chesapeake Bayhawks where in 2018 he shared Top Goalie honors and was under consideration for League MVP. Amato teaches and runs goalie clinics and is the Head Coach at Immaculata University.

Next up on the list is Drew Adams. Talk about unique, Adams never met a kick save he didn’t like. Another disciple of Dougherty, Adams was tall and skinny, impenetrable at times and capable of carrying his team to excellence. He did so at Springfield-Delco then at Penn State where he was a 3-time All American and still holds the school record for saves. Adams went to the MLL where with the New York Lizards he became one of the league’s all-time goalies, becoming a 5-time All-Star, and Goalie of the Year three times while winning a Championship. He also played for Team USA in his storied career.

Our 3rd All Time Goalie Selection is Matt McMonagle. He was “Cat” quick and very much a thinker on the Field. McMonagle was very steady and always in control, directing the defense in front of him but he also stood out and was known for his spectacular saves and pinpoint outlet passes. McMonagle was an All American at Episcopal Academy and a three-time All-American at Cornell (First-Team All-American his senior year on a Final Four team). He went on to have a stint professionally with the NY Lizards. He was recognized as one of the Top Lacrosse Goalies in his Decade by US Lacrosse. While with Duke’s, Matt had one of the biggest moments as a goalie in Duke’s Program History when he stoned the top-ranked club team in the country at the nationally recognized Champ Camp and ended its years-long winning streak.

The Final 1st Team Goalie Selection for the 20th Anniversary Team was the toughest choice to make, but it went to a current college freshman, Caton Johnson. Johnson has already started charting his path to greatness and it comes as no surprise to anyone who has watched him grow up. Johnson has cat like quickness and a unique dedication to his goalie craft that is rare. He has always had a strong family foundation of support but it’s his work ethic and confidence that make him a very, very special goalie. While cementing his abilities on the national stage with the Duke’s Program, Johnson led his high school, Manheim Township, to the Pennsylvania Class AAA Championship in 2018, the first title for a non-Southeastern PA squad. Now at North Carolina, where midway through this season he has taken over as the starter, he delivered a record 21-save performance in leading UNC to an upset win over a highly-ranked Duke University team. Keep your eyes on Johnson as it will be fun to see him in action now and for many years to come.

Goalies Receiving HONORABLE MENTION RECOGNITION are:
Harry Oldham, Springfield, West Chester & Duke’s Adult; Austin Kaut, Springfield, Penn State & Florida Launch; Matt Barrett, Malvern Prep, Virginia/Villanova; Ryan Kern, Salesianum/Navy; Kyle Gilfoy, Penncrest/Lycoming; Conor Kelly, Haverford School/Notre Dame; Andrew O’Connell, Malvern Prep/North Carolina; Alex Ready, Manheim Township/ Denver, Will Schreiner, Avon Grove/Penn State; Dustin Keen, Downingtown West/St. Joe’s’ TC Behm, Haverford School/Maryland.

NEXT: The Defensive MVP’S are both Defensemen and will be named with the All-Time Defenseman Team.

From Press Release

The KSF (Katie Samson Foundation) Lacrosse Festival will be celebrating its 19th year this weekend! The KSF Lacrosse Festival began in 2001 and has grown into the premier high school lacrosse event in the United States.

Katie Samson

This year’s festival will be held on Saturday April 27 at Radnor High School, and will be the LARGEST single-day high school lacrosse festival in the country with 54 varsity teams (26 premier boys’ teams and 28 premier girls’ teams on six fields running simultaneously), wheelchair rugby, tennis and basketball games, youth games, 20+ vendors, 10,000+ fans, 50+ major sponsors and 2 FanZones with rides, bounces, rock walls, face painting, BBQ, funnel cakes, raffle prizes, clothing, equipment etc., and a special guest appearance from the Phillie Phanatic! Games begin at 9:00 am. This is a family event!

The Katie Samson Foundation gives back! Over $100,000 was raised in 2018 with the generous support of over 50 sponsors, donations from attendees, as well as fundraising efforts by each participating lacrosse team. Since 2001 over $1.9 million has been distributed to charities benefiting medical research and providing care for people with spinal cord injuries – patient care (46 percent), research (43 percent), and quality of life (11 percent).

The Event:

Motivated by Katie’s perseverance and courage, volunteers in the lacrosse community and beyond support the cause year after year.

The Highlights:

  • 27 premier boys’ and girls’ league-sanctioned regular season games and several youth team games
  • The Fest offers these athletes an opportunity to experience a unique community spirit of giving while competing in a challenging sporting event.
  • Six fields running simultaneously from 9am to 5pm.
  • Over 10,000 attendees
  • Disabled athletes demonstrating wheelchair tennis, basketball and rugby games.
  • Families from all over the mid-Atlantic region will be enjoying games, rides, boutiques, face-painters, balloon artists, great raffle prizes, plenty of food and of course, great lacrosse. There will be two FanZones which will have “Katie’s Kiddie Korner” for younger fans- with clowns and balloon designs, a Mechanical Bull, Rock Climbing Wall, moon bounces, music, and a visit from the Phillie Phanatic!
  • Food vendors in each Fan Zone.
  • Boutiques in both Fan Zones guarantee a shopping opportunity for all – including the latest lacrosse clothing and gear at great Fest prices.

The Cause:

KSF raises money for research to identify a cure for spinal cord injuries and to optimize care and quality of life for spinal cord patients. The foundation also promotes social awareness as the lacrosse community comes together to support the festival. Through Katie’s courage and perseverance, her foundation has successfully raised funds to support spinal cord injury research and rehabilitation programs that provide much needed independence and quality of life improvements for those with spinal cord injuries.

Katie Samson – The Inspiration:

Katie Samson grew up in Wayne, PA and attended Radnor High School where she was a goalkeeper for the girls’ lacrosse team. Katie went on to study Art History at Middlebury College where she also played Division III lacrosse and helped her team capture a National Championship in 1999. The following winter, Katie’s suffered a spinal cord injury while sledding and became a quadriplegic.

After months of rehabilitation and encouragement from family and friends, Katie went back to finish her degree and help coach her college lacrosse team to two more National titles. In 2004, Katie moved to Arizona to pursue her graduate degree where she remained for six years. Katie moved back to the Philadelphia area in 2010 and became an active member of the Katie Samson Foundation.

Katie loves traveling, exploring accessible trails and spending time with her nieces and nephews. Katie recently became Director of Programs for Art-Reach, an art services organization that create, advocates and expands accessible opportunities in arts and culture. Find her on the wall of the most recent inductee class of the Radnor High School Hall of Fame.

Event Details:

The high school games will begin at 9:00am on Saturday, April 27th. All of the games will be played at Radnor High School. The festival website, www.katiesamsonlaxfest.com, has an amazing inspirational video, the full schedule (see below) as well as all the other exciting details. Or visit us on Facebook – KSF Lacrosse Festival. A $10 ($5 for students/under 3 is free!) admission fee allows unlimited access to all activities and rides within the two Fan Zones.

Supporting the festival offers an opportunity to do something meaningful and historic to impact the lives of people affected by spinal cord injuries. The Katie Samson Foundation is a 501©3 corporation. All donations are tax deductible. Please visit our website or contact the Directors of Development, Eric Gorman at KSFlacrossefest@gmail.com with any questions.

“We’re proud to announce that the city of Philadelphia — home to major pro sports team champions, and one of the best venues in North America in Talen Energy Stadium — will be host to our inaugural PLL Championship,” says PLL Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer Paul Rabil. “Since our creation, we’ve amassed continual support from the fans of Philadelphia and we’re ecstatic to bring our season’s biggest game to Talen Energy Stadium, where our first champion will be crowned in an electric atmosphere.”

“All of us at Keystone Sports and Entertainment as well as the Philadelphia Union are excited to welcome the PLL Championship Game to Talen Energy Stadium,” said Tim McDermott, Union Chief Business Officer. “Philadelphia has an incredible passion for lacrosse and the sport is experiencing tremendous growth in our region. We’re looking forward to hosting another hallmark event and showcasing the unbeatable views and fan experience that Talen Energy Stadium offers.”
