From Press Release

Creating a tradition by bringing together two of the area’s top boys’ high school lacrosse programs, Coaches John Nostrant (The Haverford School) and Frank Urso (Garnet Valley) have joined to play an annual game for the 10VE Cup.

The inaugural 10VE (LOVE) CUP game will played be on Tuesday, April 16th at 7:30 p.m. at Garnet Valley High School. The annual game will honor the memory of Kip Taviano. Taviano, who played lacrosse for Coach Urso at Brandywine Youth Club and for Coach Nostrant at The Haverford School, lost his life in an automobile accident on May 28, 2013.

Currently, Haverford School (7-3) is the top-ranked team by Phillylacrosse.com, followed by Garnet Valley (6-0).

Said Jim Taviano, Kip’s father “John and I had some conversations off and on about the possibility of such a game to be played annually. John reached out to Frank who was onboard and has been very supportive. In fact, the reaction from everyone we’ve spoken to about the game has been very positive.”

There will be a short pregame presentation to each of the coaches.

The game will alternate between the 2 schools annually with the Cup being held by the winner until the next year. It will be engraved with the winning school’s name and year.

About the camp: BaggataGuys™ Lacrosse teaches the skills of lacrosse using novel drills, concepts and language players can understand, relate to and retain – all in a high energy and supportive setting. The focus is on FUNdamentals, but with a Flair… We stress traditional staples but explore what is possible with the stick and a ball.

BaggataGuys™ training transfers knowledge, maximizes touches and develops motor coordination.
Our goal, in a condensed time frame, is to help the guys advance at an accelerated rate.
We teach ambidexterity. We set our expectations high.
We aim to increase each BaggataGuy’s lacrosse IQ and overall comfort level playing America’s native game, which our North American forebears called “Baggataway.”

This is not a cookie cutter curriculum. BaggataGuys™ training has been honed over years of collective experience by highly respected and caring parents and coaches – all of whom have played and coached at the highest level. And we have seen the results.

We know what you want to see as a parent – joy, smiles, passion, teamwork, effort, improvement, confidence and success. We have crafted the program with these things in mind. About The Head Coaches

Mark Duncan
The Shipley School, a Pre-K through grade 12 day school founded in 1894 is located in Bryn Mawr, PA and has been among the elite of the Friends Schools League in boys’ lacrosse in the past decade under coach Duncan. The Gators won five consecutive league titles at one point during an ongoing 35-game league winning streak. Duncan reached the 200-win milestone early in the 2019 season.

The Shipley School won its first ever Friends Schools League Championship in 2006 and in 2005 won their first Northeast League Championship with Duncan at the helm advancing to the EPSLA state playoffs each year. He was named Coach of the Year in both the Main Line Times and Main Line Life newspapers in 2005 and in the Northeast League. Mark was also the Head Lacrosse Coach of Team Montgomery County at the Keystone Games in 2005. Before his tenure at The Shipley School, Duncan was the Head Offensive Assistant at Division III powerhouse Whittier College. While the offensive coordinator, Whittier finished 19-1 and was ranked in the Top 20 all season, winning a WCLL Championship.

Molly Fernandez
Molly Fernandez is the former head coach at the Shipley School. Fernandez recently completed her Masters Degree and Graduate Assistant Coach tenure with Temple University Lacrosse Program. Prior to her two years as an Owl, Fernandez was a 4-year letter winner at Penn State. As a senior and team captain in 2013, Fernandez started in 20 games and ranked third on the team with 30 goals. She helped lead the Nittany Lions to a 14-7 record, their most wins since 1999, and to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for a second straight year.

In her junior season, Fernandez led Penn State with 35 goals, recording at least a hat trick in five games. She was a standout freshman at Penn State, registering at least one point in all 17 starts. She was named the American Lacrosse Conference (ALC) Rookie of the Week three times, and ranked second on the team in points with 40, scoring 27 goals while adding 13 assists.

Fernandez, was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar after the completion of her undergraduate degree in Rehabilitation and human services.

A native of Baltimore, Fernandez was a four-year letterwinner and All-Ameican at the McDonogh School in Owings Mill, Md. She led her team to the IAAM ‘A’ Conference Championship for the first time in school history in her senior year and was named an Under Armour All-American.

Fernandez is also currently the head lacrosse coach of Skywalkers 2019 Blue team in Baltimore Maryland and appears as a guest coach for NXT lacrosse teams in Philadelphia.

From Press Release

The 7th annual Play for the A’s lacrosse event will be held today at Strath Haven High School in Wallingford as the community continues its fight to help people with Alzheimer’s.

This event fully supports the Strath Haven boys’ lacrosse program’s battle against Alzheimer’s disease by raising funds that enable the community to offer support services to families affected by this dreaded disease. One hundred percent of event proceeds are shared locally to assist families whose loved ones are affected – and our fight to overcome this debilitating disease needs your help!

This year’s event features 4 games, all held at George King Field (200 S. Providence Road, Wallingford):
9:00 am – Spring-Ford vs. Strath Haven (JV)
11:00 am – Pennridge vs. Springfield (Delco)
1:00 pm – Spring-Ford vs. Strath Haven
3:00 pm – Harriton vs. Souderton

To make a secure donation to help the effort, please go to http://www.tcfhelps.org/donate.html and click on our “Play for the A’s” donation link (bottom of page) to support our fight.

From Press Releases

Ivy League Champs!

For the first time since 1988, the University of Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse team has clinched an Ivy League title. The Quakers left no doubt, scoring 13 of the game’s first 15 goals en route to a 26-13 win today at Harvard.

With the victory, the Quakers (7-3, 5-0 Ivy) can finish no worse than tied for first in the Ivy League. No. 7 Penn completes its Ivy League slate next Saturday on Senior Day, hosting Dartmouth at Franklin Field (1 p.m.) A win over the Big Green would secure Penn’s first outright Ivy League title since 1984.

Penn has also clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Ivy League Tournament set for May 3-5 at Columbia.

Junior Adam Goldner (Malvern Prep) followed up his six-goal game last week at Brown with another six-goal game. He now has 39 goals this season, No. 3 all-time in a season by a Quaker and the most since 1996.

Notes To Know
*Penn tied its single-game school record for goals, matching the 26 scored against Drexel in 1994.
*The Quakers extended the nation’s second-longest active winning streak to seven games; Penn has won seven in a row after starting the season 0-3.
*Penn has won five in a row in Ivy League play, its longest streak since the 1984 team won six in a row as part of Penn’s last unbeaten Ivy campaign.
*Senior co-captain Simon Mathias had the best game of his career, finishing with four goals and two assists. He continues to climb Penn’s all-time scoring lists, now ranking No. 4 in goals (104) and No. 6 in points (166). He has at least one point in each of his 53 career games played – the second-longest active streak in the country, and has at least one goal in 30 consecutive games played – tied for the longest active streak in the country.
*Freshman Sam Handley had a season-high six goals. In the process, he broke Penn’s single-season record for points in a season by a freshman. He now has 44, eclipsing the previous mark of 42 set by John Ward in 1995.
*Kyle Gallagher was 20-for-29 on faceoffs, his fourth game this season with 20+ wins.

Penn State 17, Michigan 7

The No. 1 Penn State men’s lacrosse team took down Michigan in Ann Arbor to move to 10-1 on the season and 3-0 in Big Ten play for this first time in program history.

Penn State saw Mac O’Keefe break the Penn State career goals record on his first game of the afternoon after scoring a beauty of a goal as he sniped a behind the back goal on the crease. O’Keefe finished the game with four goals, one assist, one caused turnover and one ground ball.

O’Keefe now has 131 career goals after passing Will Driscoll (1999-2002), who he was tied with at 127 entering the game.

Redshirt junior Dylan Foulds had a career performance to pace the Nittany Lions with a career-best six points, scoring three goals and dishing out three assists. His three goals came in the span of 1:05 on the clock as he registered goals at 3:50 in the first quarter, 3:20, and 2:45 for a one-man offensive barrage.

The third Nittany Lion attackman redshirt junior Grant Ament (Haverford School) added a cool seven points as he dished out six assists, tying his nation-leading average, and added one goal.

Senior Nick Spillane, freshman TJ Malone (Haverford School) and redshirt freshman Dan Reaume each recorded multi-point performances as Spillane added three points with a goal and two dimes, while Malone scored two goals and Reaume, a Beverly Hills, Mich., native, added a goal and an assist.

Penn State also saw Cole Willard, Jack Traynor (Malvern Prep), Seamus Glynn (Malvern Prep), Joe White and Gerard Arceri all find the back of the net.

The Tewaaraton Foundation has announced the second round of additions to the 2019 Tewaaraton Award Men’s and Women’s Watch Lists. The lists include the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlight the early contenders for this year’s Tewaaraton Award.

Among the additions are Penn’s Adam Goldner (Malvern Prep) – one of the hottest offensive players in the nation – and Notre Dame defender Hannah Proctor (Radnor).

The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are comprised of premier college coaches and are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation.

The mission of the foundation includes honoring the Native American heritage of the game of lacrosse through its annual award, scholarships and educational content. We congratulate Loyola freshman Chase Scanlan of the Seneca Nation of Indians, who joins Albany’s Tehoka Nanticoke of Six Nations as the second Native American student-athlete on the 2019 Watch List.
