Staff Report

Strath Haven senior Liam Carney says the annual “Play for the A’s” event is “more than just a game.”

“Play for A’s has always been a huge event for us, as we all are aware that it’s more than just a game,” said Carney of the 7th Annual event held Saturday at Strath Haven. “It’s for a great cause that so many people have to deal with and we’re glad we can help out in any way – and to get a win on this event makes it feel like it was an even more successful day.”

Carney’s goal with 2:57 to play lifted the Panthers to an exciting 9-8 win over Spring-Ford to highlight a day that featured four games (three varsity) and helped raise thousands of dollars to offer support services to families affected by Alzheimer’s disease. One hundred percent of event proceeds are shared locally to assist families.

The Rams had scored three straight goals to force an 8-8 tie before Carney scored the GW.

The Strath Haven Boys’ Lacrosse team

“I dodged and dished and as soon as I passed the ball my guy left me so I called for the ball back and was able to make my way to the front of the cage to finish,” he said.

Ethan Belville and Nicky Palermo each had three goals and an assist for the Panthers, while Vincey Palermo posted 10 saves. Nick Teets had four goals and an assist for the Rams (6-4).

The Panthers – who reached the state finals last year but graduated some key seniors, including Phillylacrosse.com Co-Player of the Year pick Jeff Conner – are off to a 6-3 start.

“With seniors graduating we’ve definitely had a good deal of young guys stepping up trying to fill their role and they have done a great job,” Carney said. “We’re hoping to make a deep state playoff run as we have done in the past few years and win a state title.”

Strath Haven coach Jef Hewlings said the event this year has already raised over $6,500. He gave this thank you statement to the lacrosse community:

“A most sincere thank you from the Strath Haven Panther lacrosse community to all who organized, promoted, and took part in today’s 7th annual Play for the As event that will benefit caregivers of those who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease! Your generosity, both in time and resources, will help us improve the quality of care given by family members to those that suffer the debilitating effects of dementia.

“Thank you all for your willingness to WORK HARD TOGETHER to make a difference in the lives of these individuals and their families.

“Special thanks to Spring-Ford, Pennridge, Springfield, Harriton, and Souderton for battling hard in their respective games today – and of course, for our Strath Haven guys for getting after it as well. Your efforts, both on and off the field, will be felt in many ways beyond today’s event.”

La Salle to face DeMatha Catholic (MD) Monday at UA complex in 9th Annual ‘Fallen Heroes Game’

Staff Report

The 9th Annual “Fallen Heroes Game” between La Salle and DeMatha Catholic (MD) will be held Monday night (6:00) at
the US Lacrosse’s Tierney Field in Sparks, MD.

Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion (left) with best friend Lt. (SEAL) Brendan Looney, US

The game honors the memory of two true American heroes: First LT. Travis Manion (La Salle), who died in Iraq in 2007; and his best friend and roommate from the US Naval Academy, Navy SEAL, Lt. Brendan Looney (DeMatha), who died in Afghanistan in 2010.

When Travis died he was originally buried in a family plot near his hometown. However, after Brendan passed away, the decision was made to bury both men side by side at Arlington National Cemetery. The decision to do this made national news and was covered by all of the major networks.

The first “Fallen Heroes Game” game was played in 2011 at the Naval Academy. Game two was held in 2012 at La Salle, in 2013 the game was held at Catholic University in Washington D.C. In 2014 the game was held at Penn University’s Penn Park, in 2015 it was held at Anne Arundel Community College (MD); and the last three years it was held at Banner Field, Under Armour Headquarters.

La Salle leads the series, 7-1.

Travis played lacrosse in high school and wrestled at Navy. Brendan played football and baseball at DeMatha. At Navy, he played football and lacrosse, and was a key member of the Navy team that went to the National Championship Game in 2004.

La Salle is 6-3. DeMatha, of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, is 7-5.

“The schools do a great job of honoring both fallen heroes and this game is good fellowship,” said La Salle coach Bill Leahy. “It’s a positive thing. What are the odds that two young men, best friends, would die serving their country and can be honored by us playing a lacrosse game?”

Admission and proceeds will be donated to Manion/Looney Foundations.

Penn Charter’s Tygh sets unofficial national record for faceoff wins

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/14/19

Penn Charter senior Gavin Tygh has established the all-time mark for faceoff wins by a scholastic player, according to unofficial statistics compiled by LaxRecords.

Tygh, a Virginia signee and 2018 US Lacrosse All-American, won 15 of 21 faceoffs in Saturday’s 11-7 loss at Lawrenceville School. This year he has won 138 of 192 faceoffs and he has 1150 wins and 500 losses (70 percent) in his career.

Penn Charter plays a national schedule (non-league) and competes in the powerful Inter-Ac League. Tygh passed the mark set by current Yale standout TJ Ierlan, who attended Victor High (N.Y.). Ierlan won 1135 faceoffs from 2013-16.

Tygh, a High Honorable Mention Phillylacrosse.com Player of the Year choice last year, also is scoring at a rare pace for faceoff players. This year he has 23 goals and 4 assists for the Quakers (4-6). He has also scooped over 125 groundballs.

LaxRecords has become a respected source for compiling scholastic boys’ lacrosse records, however, faceoff statistics are somewhat disputable and not kept by all teams.

Regardless, Tygh’s numbers have been accomplished against elite competition. This year he has faced seven Division I commits and most of his other foes are expected to become D1 players.

“I want to thank my coaches and teammates all throughout high school,” said Tygh. “I started in 8th grade (2015) and I can’t imagine how coach (Pat) McDonough had that kind of faith in me.

“I just tried not to mess up as much as possible because I was the new guy from middle school. I think that class of seniors was really supportive and they treated me like another teammate – not like an 8th grader.

“As I progressed and noticed I was maturing, I found mysef constantly being pushed by coach McDonough and coach (Joey) Sankey as well as (former) coach (Billy) McKinney. Whether I was in the classroom or weightroom or on the field, I am always being pushed at Penn Charter.”

Tygh’s biggest area of growth this year has been taking on extra roles, especially as the team’s top scorer. Few facoff specialists at this level also play offensive roles; he is even on man up and half the time plays on man down situations.

“I always wanted to say I am more than just a FOGO,” he said. “I take a lot of pride in that challenge of staying on the field.

“Mentally, that’s the biggest challenge. I feel a switch on the field. I start with the faceoff mindset and whether I win or lose that automatic switch goes on in my head. If I am on defense I have to see what set we are playing and and what plays we are running in transition. When I get back on ‘O’ it’s a completely new mindset. I am watching a lot more film and spending more time with coach Sankey on offense or coach McDonough on defense.

“It does get a little complicated, but I love the challenge and hopefully I can keep the good mindset.”

Tygh’s biggest concern is helping the Quakers win. Penn Charter is seeking to contend for the Inter-Ac crown and knock off some top foes.

“Our main goal right now as a team is just to believe in each other and put in the work,” he said “We have a lot of young guys and our job as seniors is to give them confidence and make them believe we can win any game.”

La Salle tops DeMatha (MD), 7-5, in 9th Annual Fallen Heroes Game; Cassel named Travis Manion Award winner

Staff Report

Zac Coar and Will Vandegrift each had two goals and an assist and Shane Cassel was honored for his defense as La Salle toppled DeMatha (MD), 7-5, in the 9th Annual Fallen Heroes Game at Banner Field at the US Lacrosse Tierney Field in Sparks (MD).

The game honors the memory of two true American heroes: First LT. Travis Manion (La Salle grad), who died in Iraq in 2007; and his best friend and roommate from the US Naval Academy, Navy SEAL, Lt. Brendan Looney (DeMatha), who died in Afghanistan in 2010.

When Travis died he was originally buried in a family plot near his hometown. However, after Brendan passed away, the decision was made to bury both men side by side at Arlington National Cemetery.

La Salle (7-3) leads the series, 8-1. DeMatha fell to 7-6.

Travis Manion Award winner Shane Cassel (center) is flanked by (from left) father Paul Cassel, Ryan Manion (Travis’ sister and the President of the Travis Manion Foundation), Col. Tom Manion (Chairman Emeritus of the Foundation) and mother Jenn Cassel

Cassel – a 2019 short-stick midfielder – was named the winner of the prestigious Travis Manion award as the La Salle player that best exemplifies the spirit and determination shown throughout Travis’ life on the playing field and in service to his country.

Cassel led a defense that stifled DeMatha’s attack all night. The Explorers led, 2-1, at halftime and 6-4 after three periods.

“This event means a lot to our program,” said Cassel. “We spent an entire week dedicating everything to Travis Manion and Brendan Looney. Every year, we circle this game and we all look forward to it because it brings us closer together and makes us realize what players came before us and what sacrafices they made – especially Travis and Brendan.

“Coach (Bill) Leahy even added a special day for us on Friday, which consisted of ‘Team Travis’ vs. ‘Team Brendan.’ We would compete against each other and at the end of the drill crawl through the mud and run through the woods.

“Even when we got water, we would army crawl to the water and have to pass it back to each other. It was actually a lot of fun and was a great reminder for those who serve and how much they sacrafice. No matter how hard practice was the people who serve have to sacrifice so much more and that is 1000x harder.”

Cassel was honored to receive the Travis Manion Award, but said the whole team deserved the recognition.

“Our game plan was to come out and play our hearts out,” Cassel said. “We knew what this game meant and we took pride going out on the field. We tried playing like Travis would, giving 100% effort on every play. I was just doing my role on the team like everyone else and giving my best effort.”

Cassel believes the Explorers are ready to make another run at a Catholic League title and a shot at a state championship. Last year La Salle fell to Manheim Township in the PIAA Class AAA final; the team lost many seniors and suffered lopsided defeats this year to powers Haverford School, Seton Hall Prep (N.J.) and Hill Academy (Ontario).

“We had a tough start at the beginning of the season, but we are starting to gain momentum,” Cassel said. “I think our turning point was Hill Academy.

“It brought us together and we knew we could achieve a lot more than we thought. DeMatha was just another step in this journey. We put in a lot of work to get to this point and we are just going to improve from here on out.”

Haverford School topples Garnet Valley, 18-7, in inaugural #10ve Cup

Peter Garno said there was no better way to honor the memory of Kip Taviano than playing Garnet Valley Tuesday night in the inaugural 10ve Cup – and playing so well at the same time.

“Obviously, this means a lot to us,” said Garno, who had four goals in the 18-7 romp. “Every year, Mr. Taviano comes and talks to us about Kip. This is more than just a game; it has deeper meaning.

“We’ve always done the summer event. All of us usually go, but this was great to have a night game – we don’t usually have night games. It’s a special event and going forward it will be an awesome tradition.”

Kip Taviano, a key and extremely popular member of Haverford School’s 2013 squad, He died in a car accident just before graduation. Kip played for the Brandywine Youth Club in Garnet Valley and was close to many in the Jaguars program.

Since his passing, his father, Jim Taviano has worked with Haverford and Garnet Valley to run many events and create the #10VE hashtag (Kip wore No 10) seen all over the Philly lacrosse community. Click here forThe #10ve website.

This 10VE Cup, in some ways, will replace the 10VE Event held the past five years at BYC in early June; also, on May 4 Haverford School will host youth clinics and special club/youth games, an Alumni Game and its Inter-Ac game with Germantown Academy inKip’s honor.

“This is for the right reason; we both support Kip,” said Garnet Valley coach Frank Urso. “It was a tragedy and anything we can do in his memory, we plan on doing.

“They (the Fords) played lights out; that was their best game. I have seen them several times this year and they move the ball extremely well and found the open man. When they had the shot they stuck it.”

Almost forgotten was that Haverford (9-3) is No. 1 and Garnet Valley (8-1) entered play at No. 2 in the Phillylacrosse.com Rankings. Right now, no team in the region is playing at the level being shown by the Fords.

Haverford led the whole way. The Fords (9-3) led, 4-1 after a period and scored two late goals in the second period to open a 9-4 margin, Then they tallied the first five goals of the second half.

Adam Salvaggio added three goals and an assist while Mac Costin and Nolan Cooleen each scoered twice. Bobby Blewitt (1g, 11/17 FO) and Chris Tsetsekos (7/12 FO) dominated at the X and Sage Garito (7 saves) was strong in goal.

Max Busenkell had three goals for the Jags.

“We are fosused on moving the ball as much as possible,” said Garno, signed with Virginia. “We were constantly cutting.”

Haverford coach John Nostrant said the program will continue to support the Taviano family and Kip’s memory.

“We thought about it (the 10ve Cup) and we had a meeting about Jim and (wife) Ellen,” said Nostrant. “They were talking about doing something different than we do in June; Garnet Valley has an unbeleivable program and there was no better way to keep Kip’s memory alive.

“I think about what he brought to Haverford School and what he took; that’s what you want. Kip embodied all that stuff. It’s unfortunate we have to do something like this, but it speaks volumes on him and what he’s done for the Haverford lacrosse program and the whole Haverford community.

“We talk about Kip’s selflessness, his pesonalirty, his humor. These guys know him. It’s important we continue to talk about him.”

Nostrant also was pleased to see his team’s offenive flow. Last week the Fords struggled offensively in a 5-4 win over Malvern Prep.

“I told Frank that his team is fast and very tough,” Nostrant said. “We just shot the ball really well and moved it really well. That was our emphasisc; we didn’t do it against Malvern. Part of it was Malverm didn’t allow us to do it. I was proud of the kids.”
