Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/4/19

The Katie Samson Festival has released its updated and final game matchups and times for the 19th Annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival, scheduled for April 27 at Radnor High School.

The event is expected to be the LARGEST single-day high school lacrosse festival in the country with 54 varsity teams (26 premier boys’ teams and 28 premier girls’ teams on six fields running simultaneously).

The Event:

The KSF Lacrosse Festival began in 2000 and has grown into the premier high school lacrosse event in the United States. Motivated by Katie’s perseverance and courage, volunteers in the lacrosse community and beyond support the cause year after year. The festival is filled with activities for the whole family; with exciting lacrosse team match-ups, a demonstration of wheelchair sports, food, fan zones, and a spirit of sportsmanship and purpose. With generous support of many sponsors, donations from attendees, as well as fundraising efforts by each participating lacrosse team, the Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival has raised nearly $2 million dollars.

From Press Releases

The No. 8-ranked University of Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse team (6-3, 4-0 Ivy) won its sixth consecutive game, besting Brown, 16-9.

Junior Adam Goldner (Mavern Prep) led all players with six goals and seven points – setting career-highs in both categories. Freshman Sam Handley continued his torrid play, totaling six points on two goals and four assists.

Eight different players scored for the Quakers, who took a season-high 61 shots and only trailed for 42 total seconds during the game.

Delaware 15, Drexel 13

Five different Blue Hens had multi-goal performances to help the Blue Hens pick up their fifth road win of the season, the highest in a single season by Delaware since 2010.

With a 9-2 overall record (2-0 in CAA), the Blue Hens are off to their best start since 2006.

Senior captain Joe Eisele (St. Augustine Prep) led the way with a career-best five goals and one assist, while junior Charlie Kitchen (St. Augustine Prep) added three goals and a career-high tying four assists. Kitchen has now scored in 28 straight games, which is the second-longest streak in the country and third-longest in school history. Bryce Reid (Avon Grove), Tye Kurtz and Clay Miller all had two goals in the win.

Defensively, Matt DeLuca had 12 saves in the victory. He moved into ninth-place all-time in program history and now sits at 447 in his junior season. He has had double-digit saves in all 11 games this spring. Austin Haynes (Moorestown), Owen Grant, Jason Seiter and Ryan Shaw all had two caused turnovers to help a defensive effort that forced Drexel into 17 turnovers on the afternoon.

Reid Bowering had five goals and an assist for the Dragons (4-6, 0-2).

Villanova 12, Denver 11

In front of a sold-out crowd at Peter Barton Stadium in Denver the Wildcats defeated the No. 10 Pioneers. This was Denver’s first loss in conference play since joining the BIG EAST five years ago.

Freshman goalkeeper Will Vitton had six saves in the opening quarter and finished with 19 on the day. Keegan Khan had three goals and two assists for the ‘Cats (7-4, 2-0).

St. Joe’s 12, Hobart 11 (OT)

In a wild finish in front of a packed crowd, sophomore attackman Matt Tufano scored the game-winning goal just 43 seconds into overtime to lead the Hawks to a victory over #20 Hobart on Sweeney Field. With the Northeast Conference win, the Hawks improve to 6-5 overall (2-1 NEC) while the Statesmen fall to 8-3 (2-1 NEC).

Sophomore goalkeeper Mike Adler made a career-high 20 saves, including nine in the second quarter alone and four in the fourth.

McCloskey (Haverford School), Matsinger (Penncrest) pledging for HEADstrong’s ‘Go Lime for Cancer Challenge’

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/7/19

HEADstrong has so many supporters around the country — and now even the globe following its Game Hair Havoc social media campaign that went viral — that sometimes the efforts of its locally-grown fundraisers can become lost in the shuffle.

At the end of the day, HEADstrong is a community organization with deep roots in Delaware County, where the Colleluori Family, who started and runs the foundation, hails from. Local support is critical for HEADstrong, a local foundation that will remain as such, no matter how widely its mission expands.

It’s with that being said that HEADstrong wants to highlight the fundraising efforts of two Delaware County-based high school student-athletes: Seamus McCloskey of The Haverford School and Ryan Matsinger of Penncrest High School. In addition to being a local foundation, HEADstrong also has deep roots in the lacrosse community, and McCloskey and Matsinger count themselves as members of that club.

Seamus McCloskey (left), Ryan Matsinger

And so, the duo have embarked on separate but unified fundraising endeavors as the high school lacrosse season recently got underway.

McCloskey is participating in the 2019 Go Lime for Cancer Challenge, pledging his ground ball statistics on the field to HEADstrong. His goal is to get to 100 ground balls, with an overall monetary figure of $3,000. McCloskey said he first heard of the foundation when he was in seventh grade, when his township lacrosse coach gave the team a lesson on the lime green shoelaces that outfitted their cleats.

“He told us they were in honor of Nick Colleluori,” McCloskey said, referring to the late HEADstrong founder. “What I like about the foundation is they strive to support all people affected by cancer — not just the patient, but they look out for the families who are also affected. They understand the process these families have to go through.”

McCloskey is dead on in his assessment that a cancer diagnosis has a ripple effect throughout an entire family, not just the person fighting the disease. It was for this reason that he wanted to get involved in the HEADstrong mission, even if he has yet to personally meet many affected by the disease.

TO START YOUR OWN GO LIME CAMPAIGN, CLICK HERE.

“To be honest, I’ve known very few,” McCloskey said. “But I hate hearing about people affected by cancer. I know it’s a hard process, and one that doesn’t leave right away. When my coach (Brendan Dawson) told us about the opportunity to do a campaign like this, I told him I was interested, and he told me ‘You were the first person I thought of.’”

For Matsinger, whose father, Wayne, is the head coach at Penncrest, his journey was entirely more personal. Unlike McCloskey, Matsinger knows family members who have been diagnosed with cancer, including his grandmother and aunt.

Additionally, his family is close with Brian Radcliffe, whose 3-year-old daughter, Charlotte, died from the disease in April 2017 (HEADstrong has partnered with the Radcliffes to host the inaugural Charlotte Grace 5K/1-mile Run on April 6 — more information on that event can be found HERE).

“The decision to do this challenge was an easy one to make,” Matsinger said. “Helping out families going through tough times by doing the thing I love most is huge. It’s going to make me push myself to achieve my goal.”

Matsinger is participating in the 2019 Faceoff Against Cancer Challenge, hoping to collect as many faceoff wins as possible (the target goal he set for himself was 200); in both Matsinger and McCloskey’s campaigns, interested donors can make a one-time flat donation, or pledge a donation for every faceoff or groundball the duo records.

Both McCloskey and Matsinger say the early responses to their fundraising endeavors have been positive, with school and community members encouraging the efforts, while teammates have made efforts to share the campaigns on social media or by word-of-mouth. And despite the fact that the two lacrosse players attend different Delaware County high schools, they are unified in fighting for the same cause.

Both stressed other players to get involved if they are able, as it has already taught both McCloskey and Matsinger great life lessons in sacrificing a part of themselves for the good of others.

“I think it’s important, and a great opportunity to give back to the community and make a difference in someone’s life,” McCloskey said. “What I’ve learned from this process is it’s the little things you do can lead to greater outcomes in the future. For me, I hope that means I am able to help someone affected by cancer.”

Matsinger concurred.

“I love the fact that HEADstrong has a house for people who come from all over the country to Philadelphia for world class cancer treatment,” he said. “From the early stages of this campaign, I’ve learned you need to be dedicated to whatever it is you are doing. It’s going toward such a great cause, so much so that I want to do everything I can to help some of these families who have come here from near and far.”

High school and club coaches can streamline data collection and easily provide feedback to players and parents through ConnectLax’s free tryout evaluation tool.

Multi-coach synchronization allows you to see your staffs’ evaluations live so you can quickly identify players to watch while they’re present. And it’s completely customizable:

Custom metrics – decide which athletic and mental skills to assess and notes to record
Custom coaches – give directors admin level control to lock down a player status, saving everyone else time
Custom groupings – pool players into groups, identify and resolve conflicts and leave the field with your rosters set

Automatically organize quantitative metrics such as 40 yard dash or shuttle run into a leaderboard. Best of all, this data integrates into the ConnectLAX recruiting platform to track player performance data over time. And it’s free to club partners for all ages and has already been used for supplemental spring tryouts.

Teams have been using the ConnectLAX’ player database for years, primarily for ongoing feedback to families, sometimes for tryouts. Now this evaluation tool has been built from scratch to run as an app, updating in the background to maximize speed without the additional download. Any club team – male or female – can use the tool and high school teams can purchase it for a fee.

From Press Release

The No. 1 Penn State men’s lacrosse team walked away with a 13-8 victory over No. 7 Ohio State on rainy Sunday night at Panzer Stadium to move to 9-1, 2-0 in Big Ten action.

The host Nittany Lions found success on both offense and defense to find their first Big Ten home win. Penn State moves to 17-6 all-time against Ohio State and stretches its win streak over the Buckeyes to four.

Leading the way for Penn State on the offensive end was junior attackman Mac O’Keefe and sophomore midfielder Cole Willard who both collected hat tricks.

With his third goal on the night, O’Keefe tied Will Driscoll’s (1999-2002) Penn State career goals record of 127.

O’Keefe and Willard were just two of eight total Nittany Lions to find the back of the Buckeyes’ net. Freshman attackman TJ Malone (Haverford School), senior midfielder Nick Spillane, redshirt junior attackman Dylan Foulds, redshirt freshman midfielder Dan Reaume and sophomore midfielder Brian Townsend also found the back of the net.

Redshirt Junior Grant Ament (Haverford School) dished out six assists to get himself over the 50-assist mark and bring his season total to 54. He also added two goals to lead the team with eight points. His six assists is the most assists by a Nittany Lion in Big Ten play

Ament is at 66 points on the season (12g, 54a), which is good for fourth all-time at Penn State, and is a new career-high, passing his 60-point total from 2017.

Ament is now at 180 career points and moved up to third all-time in Penn State history, trailing Greg Jackson (181 – 1994-97) and Gary Martin (252 – 1981-84).

Junior defenseman Nick Cardile (Avon Grove) recorded a career-high three caused turnovers and two ground balls to help keep the Nittany Lion defensive zone on lockdown. Senior LSM Kevin Fox added two caused turnovers. Chris Sabia (Haverford School) had a groundball and a turnover and Brayden Peck (Avon Grove) had a groundball on defense.

Goalie Colby Kneese anchored the defense with 14 saves and a .636 save percentage.

The Nittany Lions scored at least three goals in all four quarters and held Ohio State to just one goal in both the second and fourth quarters.
