Penn makes statement with 13-12, 3OT win over Yale

From Press Release

Statement made.

The No. 13 University of Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse team stunned the defending national champions at Franklin Field today, beating No. 2 Yale, 13-12, in triple overtime to cap an instant classic.

The win is the fifth in a row for a Penn team which had started the season with three consecutive losses. The Quakers (5-3, 3-0 Ivy League) now sit alone in first place in the Ivies.

What appeared to be a comfortable lead for the Quakers in the fourth quarter evaporated as the Bulldogs rattled off four straight goals to turn an 11-8 Penn lead into a 12-11 Yale advantage with 2:05 to play. The Quakers held on defense following a Yale faceoff win, and Tyler Dunn would transition the ball downfield before eventually beating the buzzer to level the game at 12 apiece with 0:01 remaining in regulation.

The teams would battle through two overtime periods before freshman Sam Handley switched to his left hand to fire home the game-winner and set off a raucous celebration at historic Franklin Field.

Notes To Know…
Penn is now 3-0 in the Ivy League, marking the first time since 1984 that the Quakers have opened an Ivy League season with three consecutive wins. That 1984 team would go on to finish 6-0 in the Ivy League, part of a 12-2 season.

The Quakers have won five games in a row, their longest since winning eight in a row in 2014 on their way to a NCAA Tournament berth.

The win ends a seven-game losing streak to Yale dating back to 2015. The Bulldogs had ended Penn’s season in the Ivy League semifinals in each of the last three seasons.

The win is the third in a row for Penn when playing a ranked opponent. The Quakers knocked off then-No. 8 Cornell last weekend and started their five-game win streak with a win at then-No. 11 Villanova. Overall this season, Penn is 3-3 against Top-20 opponents, and 2-2 in one-goal games against ranked opponents – each of those coming against teams then inside the Top-8.
Penn’s last win in 3 OTs came against Yale – a 10-9 win at Franklin Field in 2011. Penn is 7-9 in overtime under Mike Murphy.

Simon Mathias had two goals and an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to all 51 career games – the second-longest active streak in the nation. He also extended his goal scoring streak to 28 games, tied for the longest-active streak in the country.

Mathias moved into No. 5 all-time at Penn with 99 career goals.

Junior Kyle Gallagher more than held his own against Yale’s TD Ierlan at the X. In a matchup of two of the top four faceoff men in the country, Ierlan had 15 wins to 14 for Gallagher.
Handley finished with two goals and three assists. He now has 32 points this season, with 29 of them coming over the last six games.

Adam Goldner (Malvern Prep) scored twice, extending his point-scoring streak to 17 games. He has 2+ goals in 12 consecutive games.

Reed Junkin set a career-high with 22 saves, including four during the first two overtime periods.
Kyle Thornton had two caused turnovers and tied his career high with four ground balls.

How It Happened…

The Quakers did not lead until midway through the third quarter, but they never let Yale get too comfortable as the defending national champs never led by more than two goals. There were eight ties in the game, and it was Penn who would hold the largest lead of the game with a pair of three-goal leads in the second half.

Matt Gaudet scored twice in the first quarter, helping Yale open a 3-1 lead 7:05 into the game. After Gaudet’s second goal, Mathias would connect on an unassisted goal before Dylan Gergar scored the first of his three in the game on the man-up off an assist from Handley. Those two Penn goals came just 0:30 apart and let Yale know there would be no reprisal of last season’s Ivy League Tournament semifinals where the Bulldogs steamrolled to a 21-6 win.

In fact, the Quakers would go on to score more in this game than they did in two meetings with Yale last year.

The two sides would trade goals for the remainder of the second quarter, Yale netting the final tally of the opening half off the stick of Matt Brandau with 0:50 left in the half.

Out of halftime, Penn would net the next two goals. Mathias scored first, then Alex Roesner would drive down the right wing and give Penn its first lead of the game with a short-side snipe.

Those two goals were part of a 5-1 Penn run in the third quarter. Adam Goldner would score two of the next three for Penn, sandwiched around a goal from Gergar. Twice, Goldner found himself with space 10 yards from cage and he finished both times.

Yale would match with a 5-1 run of its own in the fourth quarter, tying the game on a Jackson Morrill goal with 2:55 to play before taking a 12-11 lead via Gaudet’s third of the game with 2:05 remaining.

TD Ierlan won the ensuing faceoff, giving Yale a chance to either add to its lead or at least run valuable clock. Penn’s defense stood tall and forced Yale into a shot clock violation with just over a half minute remaining. Tyler Dunn would do all of the work on the clear, giving Penn a chance to extend the game With time winding down, Sean Lulley fed Dunn on the right side and the senior co-captain challenged, then spun and fired a rocket inside the far post just before the clock expired.

The Quakers held on through two overtime periods, relying on two saved in each of the first extra frames from Junkin as the Red and Blue managed just one shot over the eight minutes.

Finally, in the third overtime period Gallagher won a faceoff to give Penn clean possession. Mitch Bartolo would dish to Mathias coming from behind the goal. Penn’s other senior co-captain would feed his freshman teammate, and the rookie calmly switched hands before beating Yale’s keeper stick side for the winner.

Freshman goalie Johnson – who led Manheim Twp to PIAA title – has brilliant 21-save effort to lead UNC past Duke

From Press Release

Caton Johnson – who helped lead Manheim Township to a PIAA Class AAA championship last June – made the most saves in a game by a University of North Carolina men’s lacrosse true freshman goalkeeper in history, including nine in the fourth quarter, and the Tar Heel defense held fifth-ranked Duke scoreless over the last 17:50 of the game as unranked Carolina rallied past the Blue Devils 10-8 before 3,734 fans at sun-drenched UNC Lacrosse Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Caton Johnson, seen here hoisting PIAA hardware for Manheim Twp 10 month ago, enjoyed a memorable effort for UNC

Johnson (Duke’s LC), who had only played eight minutes this season prior to Saturday, made 21 saves against the Blue Devils and allowed only seven goals (he was in the penalty box when the Blue Devils scored one of their goals). It was the most saves by a UNC goalkeeper since Kieran Burke had 21 saves against Harvard on March 17, 2015 in a 15-10 UNC victory.

The two goalkeepers were a big story in the game as Turner Uppgren had a career-high 15 saves for the Blue Devils, three more than he had last Sunday in a 9-8 overtime loss at Syracuse. The Blue Devil senior had seven of his 15 saves in the opening period.

UNC bounced back from a 16-9 loss at Maryland last Saturday to improve to 7-3 on the season while winning its ACC opener and beating the Blue Devils for the first time since 2016 and only the third time in Chapel Hill since 2003. Duke is now 8-3 overall and 0-2 in the ACC. The Blue Devils had won seven games in a row this season before its losses to Syracuse and Carolina in the last six days.

Carolina played a deep roster, including 10 true freshmen amongst the 27 players who saw the field. UNC started three true freshmen on attack for the first time in school history as Nicky Solomon, Jacob Kelly and Brian Cameron earned the starts.

UNC senior Jake Peden (Downingtown East) also stood out as an anchor on the back line for the Heels.

Midfielder Matt Gavin played in the second midfield unit and saw action in just his sixth game this season but led Carolina offensively with two goals and an assist. Brian Cameron matched his career high for goals in a game with two tallies (he also scored twice earlier this year against Furman). Both freshman attackman Nicky Solomon and senior midfielder Timmy Kelly had a goal and an assist for the Tar Heels. Solomon has scored a goal in 10 straight games, each contest of his freshman season, and Kelly ran his streak for successive games with a point to 15 matches over the last two years.

Alex Trippi, Justin Anderson, Andy Matthews and Will Nicklaus had goals for Carolina. Nicklaus, whose father played golf at Carolina in the 1980s and whose grandfather is legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, played in his first game for Carolina. His goal with 1:29 to play in the third quarter pulled UNC within 8-7 and sparked a scoring spree which saw North Carolina score three goals in the final 1:29 of the third quarter. Ryan O’Connell and Tanner Cook added assists for North Carolina.

Nakeie Montgomery scored three goals for Duke, all in a row in the third period. His third goal was part of a five-goal run by Duke which lifted it from a 6-3 deficit to an 8-6 lead with 2:50 left in the third period. Garrett Leadmon (Duke’s LC), Joey Manown, Jake Seau, Kevin Quigley and Reilly Walsh all scored single goals for Duke while Joe Robertson (Duke’s LC) and Brad Smith each had two assists. Robertson and Smith came into the game leading Duke in points with 37 and 30, respectively, but the UNC defense denied both of them goals (Robertson had nine shots-five saved by Johnson-and Smith five shots in the game, three of which were saved by Johnson).

Wings drop another close one, 12-11 to Toronto Rock

From Press Release

The Toronto Rock (9-5) punched their ticket to the post-season with a 12-11 win over the Philadelphia Wings (3-11) on Saturday night at Scotiabank Arena in front of 11,244 fans. The win also gave the Rock a three-game season series sweep of the expansion Wings and was the team’s sixth straight victory at home.

The Rock built on a two-goal run that ended the first quarter and a 6-1 run gave them a 7-2 lead before the halfway point of the second quarter. Philadelphia tallied twice to close to within three, trailing 7-4 at the half.

In the third quarter, Rob Hellyer tacked on a pair of goals to the one he scored in the second quarter to complete the hat trick. He, along with Tom Schreiber and Dan Craig, helped increase the Rock advantage to four, leading 11-7 after three quarters.

The Wings weren’t done however. The visitors outscored the Rock 4-1 in the final quarter – as Matt Rambo (La Salle, Duke’s LC, Springside CHA assistant coach, 3G, 3A), Kevin Crowley (FusionLacrosse Co-Founder, Shipley assistant coach, 2G, 4A) and Blaze Riorden (1G, 4A) led the comeback along with Jordan Hall (4G, 1A) – and had a goal called back after video review determined Vaughan Harris had stepped in the crease prior to scoring. Brandon Slade netted the Rock’s twelfth goal, the eventual game-winner, off of a pretty behind-the-back pass from Powless on the crease.

Rock goal scorers were Powless and Hellyer with hat tricks that were complimented by two goals each from Craig and Rogers as well as singles from Schreiber and Slade.

Philly players help No. 1 Penn State topple No. 3 Maryland, 13-10

From Press Release

The No. 1 Penn State men’s lacrosse team took down No. 3 Maryland, 13-10, on Sunday night to move to 8-1, 1-0 in Big Ten play, earning the program’s first varsity win over the Terrapins.

Penn State moved to 3-40 all-time against the Terps, but the two Nittany Lion wins came in 1916 and 1920 before Maryland became a varsity lacrosse program in 1924.

The Nittany Lions used a balanced offense and a solid defensive stand to take the ‘W’ back to University Park.

Penn State saw eight different players score goals and nine total players record points.

Sophomore middie Jack Kelly led the Nittany Lions with three goals for his sixth multi-goal performance and his fifth hat-trick of the year. Kelly also added an assist for four points.

Junior attackman Mac O’Keefe also recorded four points scoring two goals and dishing out two assists. O’Keefe is now at 124 career goals, just three goals shy of tying Will Driscoll’s (1999-2002) Penn State Career Goals Record of 127. He also now has 38 goals on the year.

Senior Nick Spillane had a three-point performance with two goals and an assist.

Redshirt junior Grant Ament (Haverford School), redshirt freshmen Dan Reaume and freshman Jack Traynor (Malvern Prep) each recorded two points as Ament dished out two assists, Traynor scored two goals, and Reaume tallied one of each.

Redshirt junior Dylan Foulds, sophomore Cole Willard and freshman TJ Malone (Haverford School) all recorded a goal.

Ament is now has 48 assists this season and 112 for his career.

At the ‘x,’ junior Gerard Arceri recorded 10 ground balls for a career-high in a Big Ten game. He also went 18 of 26 for the game for 69.2-percent.

Junior Colby Kneese stood tall in cage, recording seven saves and earning his eighth win of the season.

Senior defenseman Chris Sabia (Haverford School) recorded two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Also on defense, Nick Cardile (Avon Grove) had four groundballs and Brayden Peck (Avon Grove) had three groundballs and a caused turnover.

Penn State opened the game with an 8-1 first quarter, and though that seemed to set the tone for the game, Maryland would bring it back to 8-7 late in the third quarter after being able to hold the high-powered Penn State offense scoreless for 27:57 in the game. Penn State would score their eighth goal with 00:01 on the clock in the first, and their ninth goal would come at 2:04 in the third.

That goal at 2:04 came from Willard who was able to inject life back into the Nittany Lions as they then followed it up with a goal by Reaume less than a minute later to take a 10-7 lead into the fourth.

The two teams would each score three goals in the fourth, and the lead the Nittany Lions built ultimately paved the way for the win in College Park.

From Press Release

The 4th Annual Relentless Hope Cancer Awareness Day is an event in which the Emmaus Hornets and Southern Lehigh Spartans lacrosse teams play to benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and HEADstrong Foundation, respectively.

It will be held on April 27th at Southern Lehigh High School. This year the event will be held on a Saturday and will include both the boys and girls JV and Varsity teams.

On Saturday April 27, the Southern Lehigh Spartans will be hosting this years Relentless Hope Lax Match. Together, the teams are working to fight cancer by incorporating an Awareness Day as part of the game.

The rematch continues as a long time, friendly rivalry where the coaches and players from both teams know each other very well, both on and off the field.

In addition to outstanding lacrosse action, the event will include various fundraising activities. Throughout the game, prizes of big-ticket raffle items will be awarded. Sheets of raffle tickets will be sold at the game for $10 or $20.

Additionally, food and soft drinks will be available for purchase. Each team is selling t-shirts to raise funds for their cause, both before the event and at the game.

The Emmaus PanCAN t-shirt is sponsored by local businesses. Emmaus PanCAN t-shirt is purple and white. Southern Lehigh’s HEADStrong shirt is gray and is sponsored by several local businesses in the Southern Lehigh area.

In addition to this, each team will wear accessories designed for the event to reflect their cause. During the event, spectators will have access to information tables staffed by PanCAN and HEADStrong representatives.

Southern Lehigh is sponsoring the Headstrong Foundation. The HEADstrong Foundation is a charitable non-profit organization founded in 2006 by Nick Colleluori to improve quality of life for cancer patients and their families. Nicholas “Head” Colleluori was a lacrosse player from Pennsylvania diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a blood cancer affecting the lymphatic system. At the time, he played Lacrosse at Hofstra University.

Emmaus is sponsoring the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, a nationwide network dedicated to creating hope for those affected by pancreatic cancer through research, patient support, community outreach and government advocacy. The organization raises money for direct private funding of research and also advocates for more aggressive federal research funding of medical breakthroughs in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer.

The event starts with JV girls playing @ 10:00 am followed by the JV boys @ 11:30. The HEADstrong ceremony will begin at 12:45.

featuring local students singing/playing the National Anthem, a ceremonial faceoff for the boys and draw for the girls done by individuals in our community who are currently battling cancer.
The Varsity girls will play at 2:00 followed by the Varsity boys at 4:00.

Staff Report

Shipley School senior co-captain Ben Ashkenazy calls Gators veteran head coach Mark Duncan an inspiration to is players.

“Coach Duncan is a great coach who has helped me progress as a leader and as a player,” said Ashkenazy. “His ability to make in game adjustments is phenomenal and his ability to inspire his players is even greater. I have loved to play under him for four years and I congratulate him on this major accomplishment.”

Shipley coach Mark Duncan (center) celebrates his 200th career win with his players and assistant coaches

That accomplishment occurred last Thursday when Duncan’s Gators capped a 4-0 Spring Break trip to Florida with a 21-5 victory over St. Petersburg Catholic, giving Duncan 200 career wins at Shipley.

When the Gators met in the far corner of the field for their standard post-game talk, assistant coach Robb Chambers, a 1994 Shipley alum, tossed him the game ball and congratulated him on his 200th win – setting off a wild celebration as 32 players, all armed with bottles of Diet Mountain Dew, put a personal touch on the typical Gatorade bath.

The celebration feted a man who has been coach and Athletic Director at Shipley for 18 seasons, winning six Friends League Championships (seven titles in all) while compiling a 200-117 record,

Duncan’s players, past and present are fiercely loyal. His coaching style pushes players to flourish and grow as committed student-athletes. To his credit, his staff is impressive with former D1 coach Chambers, respected goalie coach Joe Donnelly and current NLL All-Star Kevin Crowley.

“Coach Dunc’s love for the game goes beyond coaching,” said junior captain Henry Reed. “He seems to know everyone and everything in the lacrosse world and is a great person to be so closely connected to. His excitement about each practice gives the team energy and he pushes us to be creative and confident lacrosse players.”

Coach Duncan currently has one of his more talented teams despite its youth. Shipley is hoping to challenge five-time champion Academy of the New Church for this year’s league title.

“He’s improved my knowledge of the game, helping me understand my role as not just a player but a leader to a team,” said junior co-captain Randall Brown. “He’s always had a thirst for winning and I’m happy he’s reached this milestone in his career.”

Coach Duncan grew up on Long Island in a family of educators. His father worked at Farmingdale High School for over 30 years and his mother was a teacher at the Three Village Schools in Stony Brook. His older brother was also a state champion at Ward Melville, went on to be a captain at Penn and is now a principal in Northern New Jersey.

Coach Duncan started his career playing at storied Ward Melville HS on Long Island where he won a NY state championship in 1992. He became one of the leading scorers in the nation while at Lehigh where he as a Patriot League Player of the Year and remains the all-time leading goal scorer in Lehigh history.

He coached at Whittier College in Southern California before moving to PA with his wife Michelle. He took the job at Shipley in 2002 and in 2005 won the first league title in Shipley boys’ lacrosse history while still playing in the Northeast League.

Shipley joined the Friends League in 2006 and Duncan’s Gators won FSL Championships in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 while achieving runner-up status the last 5 years. Duncan also has coached for LB3, Dukes, and Mesa as well as other clubs from San Diego back to Long Island.

Coach Duncan would like to thank all of his players past and present as well as Dr. Piltch, Shipley headmaster, and his wife Michelle and three kids, Ella, Sadie, and Tate.

“My love for the game and for these boys has never changed over the years,” he said. “Coaching these teams has been a great experience and I look forward to many more years and hopefully many more wins!”
