From Press Release

Hartford senior Chris Duffy (Abington, Duke’s LC) capped off an impressive four-year career with the Hawks by adding United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Scholar All-America honors to his resume, the organization announced on Thursday.

Hartford’s Chris Duffy (Abington)

“We are extremely proud of Chris,” said Ryan Martin, who concluded his first season at the helm of the Hawks in 2017. “He had an outstanding career as a Hawk both on the field and inside the classroom.

“Chris was a three-time team captain who led us to an America East Championship as a redshirt-junior in 2016, so capping off his senior year by being named a USILA Academic All-America is a huge honor for both Chris and our program. His presence will be missed in so many ways next season.”

Duffy becomes the second Hawk in program history to earn USILA Scholar All-America honors, joining Tate Klidonas, (Emmaus) who received the award at the conclusion of his career in 2014. A total of nine Hartford student-athletes have received USILA All-America distinction, including current Hawk Dylan Protesto (Penncrest), who earned a spot on the Third Team in 2016.

Throughout his career, Duffy has been recognized on several occasions for his excellence both on and off the lacrosse field. He received America East All-Conference Second Team laurels for the second-straight season in 2017 and earned All-Academic Team honors for the third time in his career this past season. In addition, Duffy was named to the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Academic All-New England Team last month.

Duffy closed out his four-year career as one of the top defenders in program history, as he is ranked No. 4 all-time in caused turnovers with 40. A civil engineering major, he graduated from the College of Engineering, Technology and Architecture with a 3.45 GPA and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree at Hartford.

Junior Dominic DeFazio (Hatboro-Horsham) of the Stevenson University men’s lacrosse team was selected as the ECAC Division III South Defensive Player of the Year and as a USILA Honorable Mention All-American.

In addition, DeFazio was named a First Team ECAC All-Star.

Stevenson’s Dominic DeFazio (Hatboro-Horsham)

DeFazio, who was also the MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Year, started all 20 games for the Mustangs in 2017 and recorded a team-high 44 caused turnovers, while picking up 69 ground balls, the second highest total on the Mustangs.

A two-time MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week, DeFazio had multiple caused turnovers in 13 contests and led a Stevenson defensive unit that allowed just 8.5 goals per game and allowed single-digit opponent goals in 12 of its final 14 contests.

The Stevenson men’s lacrosse team finished 14-6 overall and ranked No. 13 USILA Division III poll. The Mustangs won their fifth consecutive MAC Commonwealth championship and made their ninth straight NCAA tournament appearance.

PIAA Class AA boys: Springfield-Delco repeats as state champion, tops Henderson, 9-8

The roots of Springfield-Delco’s road to Saturday’s PIAA Class AA state championship game didn’t start to take shape until the Cougars had a few early-season ugly bumps.

Springfield-Delco wins its second straight PIAA championship and the first in Class AA with a 9-8 win over Henderson

MIAA power Boys’ Latin and Central League power Conestoga blew Springfield out, marring the Cougars’ early slate. It was eerily similar to 2016, when the Cougars started 2-5 before winning their first PIAA championship. The losses had a lasting effect on Springfield in the best way possible.

“We had a team meeting and said that, ‘last year was nothing and we had to start all over,’” defenseman Nick Matty said. “I didn’t think we were going to have a shot at playoffs at that point. We did what we had to do.”

That all came to fruition Saturday at West Chester East when Springfield (22-3) withstood a late West Chester Henderson charge to seal up a 9-8 win that gave their second straight PIAA crown.

But it was not easy against a pesky Henderson (20-4) squad.

After Jack Spence rifled home what held up as the game-winner with 4:42 to play, the Warriors came to life. Joe Saulino dropped a highlight-reel gem of a goal on the Cougars, then Brandon Moyer set up Matt Turse’s fourth snipe of the game to bring Henderson to within one with 2:45 to go.

Luke Wierman won the last of his 15 faceoff triumphs to set up Henderson’s last chance, until the Warriors ran into a guy who’s foiled a scoring threat or two in his day.

Two-time All-American goalie James Spence (eight saves) made a terrific save on Moyer, but Henderson got another crack at it and missed the net. Out of the timeout, pressure from Matty caused a ground ball, and the Warriors’ last pass to set up a good look sailed high to give the Cougars their second consecutive state title.

“We were trying to get something in close, because (Spence) is really, really good,” Henderson midfielder Nick Mascetti said. “He eats up just about everything from outside of 10 yards. We were trying to jam the crease and get one last look, but they put the clamps down.”

“It feels great,” said attackman and passing wizard Kyle Long, who set up four Springfield-Delco’s goals. “Throughout the whole season, everyone’s coming for us. I think it’s a little bit better than last year because every year, somebody has to win it, but not everybody gets to go back-to-back.”

As he has all year, Long elevated the play of those around him, and against the Warriors, Joey DeBernardi was the one who shined brightest. The junior went off for four goals, the most impressive his last one that put Springfield up 8-5.

He slithered through a maze of defenders, popping open for a split second. Long effortlessly weaved a pass through that cluster of sticks and body parts, DeBernardi caught it and immediately let it fly while taking a big hit. The end result was a top-shelf rocket and a perfect way to punctuate DeBernardi’s big day.

“I just try to come out and do my thing,” DeBernardi modestly said. “You get into a groove. Kyle finds me every time and I trust him. I know he’s going to give a good pass right at my ear, and just turn and shoot and hope it goes in.

“It definitely helps to have been here before. Obviously, a very good team, but you’ve just got to buy into your system and trust your teammates and know that coming in, they’re going to have my back no matter what.”

That trust helped erase the memory of an ugly start for the second straight year.

For the second championship game at East in less than a month, Henderson was great, but couldn’t quite solve Pennsylvania lacrosse’s newest dynasty. Turse finished with four goals, while Archer Rymiszewski, Brandon Moyer, Joe Saulino and Mascetti all added a goal and an assist. Luke Wierman was outstanding at the faceoff X, collecting 15 of 21 wins.

Despite that, there was a familiar scene with Springfield players posing for pictures with their newest piece of hardware.

So much for those two losses.

PIAA Class AAA boys: Avon Grove claims first title with 5-4 double OT win over Conestoga

Zach Augustine was in seventh grade the last time that Avon Grove made the PIAA championship game. The Red Devils lost to Penncrest in 2014, and there aren’t many fond memories for Augustine from that day.

Avon Grove celebrates its first state title with a 5-4 double OT win over Conestoga in the PIAA class AAA final

“We stayed at the tailgate after the game,” Augustine said. “It stunk. Everyone was so bummed.”

Given his chance to reverse those fortunes, Augustine wasn’t going to pass up his shot at being the hero. With the PIAA Class AAA title game in double overtime at West Chester East, the Red Devils made their move. Scooter Whiteside dodged down the left alley and dumped the ball to Brendan Harman, who was coming around from X. Harman deftly snapped a pass to a wide-open Augustine on the back side.

One second later, Augustine was living out every kid’s dream, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to win the state championship. Avon Grove 5, Conestoga 4 in double overtime for the first PIAA championship in school history.

“We didn’t really run a set play. We ran more of a motion,” Augustine said. “Brendan is usually on the right side, but he cut through and I saw him passing. I went around the left side, he went to the right and passed it over the net. Somehow, it just happened.

“The goal was in the way and the goalie’s there, but I just shot it. I saw it hit the net and I just took off. I didn’t even think we won states. I didn’t know what to think.”

That goal was just a small part of the craziness that went into the final minute of regulation and overtime. The Red Devils (23-2) tried to run out the clock while on attack late in regulation and saw an open net, but Scott MacMillan (nine saves) came out of nowhere to make potentially the finest save of the year by sliding back into his crease and putting his stick up to deny a surefire goal.

Three turnovers in less than a minute and a flag on Avon Grove later, Conestoga (22-4) took to the man-up and Henry Berg made the big play. He put a move on a defender at X and skied through the air, dropping in a bouncer with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation to go to tie the game. In the extra frame, MacMillan robbed Whiteside to push it to another overtime.

Nate Hammond (7 of 12 FO) won the second extra stanza’s opening faceoff and the teams traded turnovers. The Red Devils made sure the Pioneers never saw the ball again en route to that elusive first state title.

“That (2014) team paved the way,” Augustine said. “I played with a couple of those guys last year. Seeing all the older kids’ faces – they’ve been there and lost – I didn’t want them to lose again. It’s their senior year and they deserve to win.”

The two teams met in the District 1 final with Conestoga winning a wild shootout, 14-12. Avon Grove made adjustments from that first meeting and baited the Pioneers into a slower, lower-scoring affair. The defensive tandem of Bryce De Muth and Brayden Peck guided a group that made life miserable for the Conestoga offense, stymying a red-hot unit.

“Defensively, we did not play our game in districts,” De Muth said. “It was not us. It was the worst we played all year. I feel that we’re one of the best defenses in the state and we just stepped up today and played how we should.

“We didn’t change anything because we knew we were the better team and we didn’t play the way we should have in the district game.”

The game’s slower style played into the Red Devils’ hands. Conestoga has the weapons and the playing style to get into a track meet with anyone, but Avon Grove successfully harnessed the Pioneers’ horses.

Conestoga was making its sixth trip to the state finals. The Pioneers won the titles from 2010-2012 and lost in the finals in 2013. This was the first year with two classifications.

“They just took some very long offensive possessions,” said Tommy Sopko, who had a pair of goals for Conestoga. “They were slowing the game down and we like to play fast and push it, so that was smart to not let us play to our strength. Their defense was really good, so when we get limited touches, it looks good for them.”

There’s nothing that looks better in Avon Grove’s eyes than that state championship trophy and gold medals.

Staff Report

A second-half rally by Moorestown made it interesting, but the Quakers fell to Delbarton, 15-9, Saturday night in the New Jersey Tournament of Champions final at Kean University.

It was the second straight T of C title for the Green Wave and No. 6 overall in 10 tries, since the tourney was created in 2004. Delbarton was the Non-Public A champion and Moorestown won the Group 3 state crown.

Moorestown jumped to a quick start as Quaker senior standout Frankie Labetti – who dominated at the X – won the opening faceoff and fed Ben Cantwell for a 1-0 lead 7 seconds into play.

But the Green Wave scored the next four goals and led, 8-3, at halftime, ding 8-3 lead.

Delbarton widened the lead to 11-3 early in the second half, but Moorestown used a 5-0 run to close out the third quarter behind Labetti, Quinn Willis (three goals, one assist) and Will Corbi (three goals, one assist).

Delbarton responded withe the next three goals, though, to take back the momentum.

Labetti had two goals and two assists for the Quakers, who reached the Tournament of Champions final for the first time in program history.

From Press Release

A pair of recent graduates in Kevin Gayhardt (Episcopal Academy) and Eric Persky (New Canaan, Conn.) have been honored by the USILA as Scholar All-Americans following their senior seasons to represent the University of Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse team.

Penn’s Kevin Gayhardt (left), Eric Persky

In order to be considered for the prestigious honor, the student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 and be a significant contributor to their team both on and off the field. The duo are the first recipients of the award for the Quakers since 2015 when Matt McMahon received the same honor.

Gayhardt concluded his collegiate career as a unanimous First-Team All-Ivy selection during a season where he captained the Red and Blue. A stalwart on defense, Gayhardt started in all 13 games for Penn this season and tallied 22 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. A Second-Team All-Ivy honoree in 2016, Gayhardt collected a career total of 69 ground balls, 28 caused turnovers, and three points (2g, 1a) in 47 games.

Persky finished his senior campaign as an Honorable Mention All-Ivy selection where he appeared in all 13 games with 11 starts on defense. He picked up 14 ground balls and caused seven turnovers on the season, and finished his collegiate career playing in 44 games with 21 starts in addition to picking up 44 ground balls and causing 21 turnovers.

The Quakers concluded 2017 with a 7-6 overall record and 3-3 mark in Ivy League play. The Red and Blue entered the Ivy League Tournament as the No. 4 seed and fell in quadruple overtime to Yale, 13-12, who earned the NCAA bid following their win of the conference tournament.
