Salesianum enjoys third straight Delaware state title and sixth in seven years with win over Cape

Staff Report

Michael Drake understands that every team in Delaware sets its sights on knocking off Salesianum School.

Salesianum School won its third straight Delaware state title and sixth in seven years

“Every year we know everyone is gunning for us and we use it as motivation,” said the Sallies senior midfielder. “We know they want to knock us off and it’s the seniors’ job to show the younger kids the ropes and lead them to victory.”

The Sals’ seniors did just that Saturday when Salesianum defeated Cape Henlopen, 13-5, to claim its third straight state championship and sixth in seven years.

Sallies (15-3) scored 15 seconds into play on a goal by Patrick Drake and Bradley Santore (three goals, one assist) followed a minute later for a 2-0 lead. Mike Drake made it 3-0 and after Greg Boyce (two goals) scored for Cape (14-5), Santore and Michael Drake made it 5-1.

Brock Maloomian (two goals) and Boyce scored to make ot 5-3, but Cooper Urban (three goals) scored twice and Brett Hobbs gave the Sals an 8-3 halftime lead. It never got close.

“The 2017 team had strong senior leadership,” said Mike Drake, who is headed to Notre Dame. “We had 19 seniors and I truly believe having that many seniors who know how to win a state championship makes the difference.”

The Sals were prepared for the Vikings, whom they beat just 10-8 on May 12.

“Our game plan on Saturday was to jump them early and we fully executed it.” said Drake. “We scored in the first 20 seconds and never looked back after we took the early lead.”

Goalie Brady Emmi added 10 saves for the Sals.

Drake said no one has forgotten the feeling from three years ago when Cape Henlopen stunned the Sals, 9-7. to win the crown. It has been referred to as the biggest Delaware lacrosse upset in recent years.

“It feels great to go out with three straight state championships,” Drake said, “Three years ago I was on the field when we lost the game and it was one of the worst things I’ve ever experienced.

“Me and my senior brothers wanted to make sure nobody on the team experienced a state championship loss.”

The Deep Run SEPYLA A-1 team put together a perfect season of 11-0 ending with a 15-5 SEPYLA championship win over a very talented Haverford team in the U15A playoffs.

DEEP RUN CHAMPIONS – Back/Middle Row (Left-Right) Assistant Coach Rick Stranix, Zack Kraus, Assistant Coach Chris Pianko, Matthew Fleish, CJ Ocasio, Jake Stranix, Mason Lasasz, Jack Ferguson, Luke Yoder, Fabian Padin, Connor Frisch, Christopher Fanelli, Travis Washington, Jack Lenox, Ethan Smith, Shane Hartzell, Tommy Hart, Matt Rauch, Assistant Coach Charlie Pianko. Front Row Left- Right Nathan McMahon, Tyler Richardson, Head Coach Mark Fanelli. NOT PICTURED: Leigh Ferguson

Deep Run Lacrosse was established in 2007 and we have been slowly growing in numbers each year. Deep Run is also the feeder program for Pennridge Men’s Lacrosse which has also been growing and improving over the years. This title was the club’s first ever SEPYLA Championship in club history.

The team was comprised of all 8th graders, some that have played their whole life and others that picked up a stick for the very first time in March. Deep Run is a smaller club compared to most, with only 120 players in the program from 1st-8th grade.

Deep Run capped off a stellar 7-0 regular season record heading into playoff time where we faced 4 very well respected and talented lacrosse teams. Deep Run beat Ridley 12-6 in the Semi Finals and went on to beat Haverford 15-5 in the finals to cap off a historic season.

Joe DeBernardi and Zac Venit each added two goals and Mike Vent had a goal and an assist and Jack Spence two assists.

The Cougars were the final PIAA champion last year under the old, one-classification system.

“He (Tulskie) is really a great finisher and shooter from that lefty spot,” said Long, a junior midfielder. “We played in a youth program together. Then he went to (Cardinal) O’Hara team. This year he came back. Joey (Debarnardi), he and I really showed up in the playoffs.”

Long said he has always functioned as a setup guy in all the sports he has played, basketball, football and lacrosse.

“We’re a great team,” said Tulskie. “He (Long) is he passer and I am the finisher. It is just a great position.”

Now comes Saturday’s ultimate test for the Cougars – the state championship game against Henderson.

“This is the greatest opportunity, to win the state,” said Tulskie. “In the beginning of the year, we set this goal. We wanted to win (again) since our last championship. That is what we have been working for – a state championship.”

As its been all year, the Springfield-Delco defense was air-tight. The unit of Pat Clemens, Nick Cutuli, Nick Matty, and Anthony DiVario and defensive middies Matt Ries and Jamie Bove gave the Crusaders few opportunities. When threatened, All-American James Spence was unbeatable.

For LC Bobby Bausman was strong with nine saves and Nick Heiler won 10 of 16 face offs.

Lansdale Catholic head coach Tom Nace is very justly proud of the season his Crusaders enjoyed. LC made its first state playoff appearance and then won a pair of games to advance to the semifinals.

“I knew coming into the season this year that we had 12 seniors who would play their hearts out together,” said Nace. “We achieved all of our goals and more.”

LC defeated Eastern York (Dist. 3-3), 14-8, in the opening round of states and followed that up with a 12-9 victory over Crestwood (Dist. 2-1).

From Press Release

Victory Event Series is excited to introduce the NEW Beast of the East Showcase Sunday at West Chester University. This recruiting event will provide boys lacrosse players from the 2018, 2019, and 2020 graduating classes with guaranteed exposure to top level D1-D3 college coaches.

The Victory Event Series staff has created the Beast of the East showcase to produce a high-level and thrilling atmosphere, with many of the nations’s top college coaches in attendance. These coaches will not only be recruiting at the event, but also coaching the prospect teams throughout the day.

Beast of the East will display 140 of the top uncommitted high school prospects in the nation on only two fields, assuring all athletes with unmatched competition in front of over 50 college coaches. The event guarantees each team three 50-minute games, with an opportunity to play in the Beast of the East All-Star game at the end of the day.

The game will consist of the showcase’s top 40 players, selected from a panel of college coaches, and conclude with a Beast of the East “Most Valuable Player” or the “Beast of the East”.

Brian Santoleri, the showcase director, is thrilled to host the new event and believes that the tournament has unlimited potential for hundreds of future college prospects. Being a coach at Haverford College, Santoleri feels that not only does the tournament provide college prospects with a unique experience to showcase their skills, but will also present college recruiters with a hands on approach to coaching prospects.

This includes live game atmospheres with halftime speeches, coaching adjustments, and an opportunity to get to know players throughout the 3 game span.

“There will be 140 of the top lacrosse prospects in the nation provided with a college coaching experience on only two fields,” Santoleri said. “The response has been amazing. The players are excited to compete against top competition, and the feedback from the coaches has been overwhelming.

“I can’t wait for the showcase to begin and look forward to its promising future.”

Phillylacrosse.com will provide live coverage of the event.
