Player reaction from ‘Beast of the East’; Poli (CB South-PA) is ‘Beast’ winner in Braveheart

Pillylacrosse.com, Posted 6/12/17

When 2018 attackman Dante Poli learned he would have to face midfielder Jon Lanzalotto, about five inches taller, in a Braveheart to decide the All-Star Game winner and individual MVP of today’s “Beast of the East” Showcase at West Chester University, he almost cringed.

Beast of the East Dante Poli of Central Bucks-PA South (2018 attackman)

“I was thinking, ‘I hope he doesn’t take faceoffs,'” said Poli, of Central Bucks South and Twist. “I just stayed low; the lower you get the stronger you are.”

Poli eventually prevailed after his goalie made a big save, which led to a fastbreak goal. By winning the Braveheart, Poli was given a specially made belt as the top player in an early-season showcase event that drew 135 players and attracted 37 coaches.

“Coming in, personally I thought I started off slowly,” said Poli, who had 49 goals and 40 assists for CB South this year and two in the All-Star game. “I thought right at the beginning we (players on his team, Team Lehigh) were trying to get to know each other and after we started knowing each other and working together more it started coming together.

“The All-Star Game was a really close game. In the Braveheart, the goalie bailed me out. Then once I got the ball, I thought to myself, ‘Run!’ That’s all I had on my mind.”

How did it feel to win a showcase MVP and win the inaugural “Beast Belt” in that fashion?

Jon Lanzalotto, South Brunswick-NJ

“It was an awesome experience,” he said. “Just knowing I can do it and having my name up here was special.”

What type of college is Poli looking for? “It starts with education,” he said,. “I will follow that and go from there because I won’t be playing lacrosse for a living.”

Comments from others that stood out Sunday:

Jon Lanzalotto, 2018 MF, South Brunswick-NJ/Vikings Black

On the event: “I just wanted to come out here and compete; I have never been to a tournament like this with so much exposure. I think one thing I learned was the importance of talking; not even n the lacrosse sense, but communicating with teammates and making friendships. I feel like my team competed well.”

Tristan Lynch, Bishop Shanahan-PA

What type of school are you looking for? “I would love to go to a D1 or D2 school but it’s mostly the academics; it’s whatever the academic brings me. Lacrosse is second.”

Tristan Lynch, 2018 DEF, Bishop Shanahan-PA/Freedom

On the event: “I didn’t know how it was going to go but I was excited. The competition was good; I was surprised that there were some 2020s that were good players. It was a great time with guys that really could play the game. I think I learned about trusting my teammates. You had to pick it up real quick an figure out who is who and figure out who can do what and what you have to do to win.

What type of school are you looking for? “I am definitely looking for a school with engineering and finance. I definitely want to play on a good team and play a lot; whether it’s a D1 or D3 team that would take me and let me play.”

Lonnie Jones, 2018 ATT, Archbishop Stepinac-NY/Topside Snipers

On the event: “To be honest my expectations were pretty high based on the teammates I knew coming here. And it completely exceeded my expectations. The competition was great; I had some great players guarding me all day. It’s not all about scoring; it’s about being a true team player and being positive and encouraging for your teammates.

Lonnie Jones, Archbishop Stepinac-NY

What type of school are you looking for? “I’ve been looking D1 and dreaming about it since I was a kid. I am interested in Criminal Justice.”

Justin Spencer, 2019 ATT, LaSalle Academy-RI/Primetime Penguins

On the event: “I really wanted to get some exposure and come further down from Providence and see what they really had to offer. I think getting to play as a team went well and the guys around really helped me excel. It was different not playing with the same guys (you play with) every day, but our coach helped us get the offense down. You have to be athletic and not be a ballhog; make sure you are making the extra pass and really showcase what you have to offer while also making the guys around you better.”

What type of school are you looking for? “I am interested in colleges down south (Mid-Atlantic region). Right now I am looking at D1, D2 or D3; I am looking at really good business schools.”

Eric Fioccola, 2019 MF, Fair Lawn-NJ/Brotherhood

Justin Spencer, LaSalle Academy-RI and Eric Fioccola, Fair Lqwn-NJ

On the event: “My club coach nominated me and I looked at the college coaches coming and that interested me. You have to adjust to everyone around you and communicate and get the ball moving. I think it went well; a big part of it was getting spacing from others players. I learned to really communicate better and get the ball moving faster.”

What type of school are you looking for? “I am definitely looking D1 and some D3 schools. Hopefully I can get something in D1.”

Infusing the core values of the HEADstrong Foundation, camp organizers have created an amazing experience for lacrosse player’s ages 7-14 that are looking to elevate their level of play. Pairing the highest level of lacrosse instruction with life skills and service, the organization hopes to share HF founder Nicholas Colleluori’s vision of empowering athletes to make a difference in their communities.

Supporting the effort is a dedicated staff comprised of current and former professional and collegiate lacrosse players and coaches many whom have played competitively for the HEADstrong Lacrosse Club. HEADstrong’s personalized approach to lacrosse instruction focuses on all aspects of the game with both individual instruction and group/team skills.

The goal of HEADstrong Lacrosse Camps are to assist in the transitioning of a player from good to great by providing qualified instruction with a 10:1 camper to counselor ratio. Players will learn fundamentals of individual, group and team lacrosse skills in a positive atmosphere.

Players will learn the fundamental aspects of dodging, passing, catching, shooting, individual defense, goalie play and face-off technique. In addition, players will learn team skills such as team offense, team defense, riding, clearing and transition play. There will also be guest appearances from professional lacrosse players as well as cancer survivors who will share their stories with campers.

Campers will receive a HEADstrong Lax Tank and Laces. Campers will also have the chance to win amazing prizes.

“Our Nick aspired to be an educator, a coach and a counselor. His desire to be a positive in the community was only fueled during his battle with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Sensing his time was short Nick created a way through the HEADstrong Foundation to inspire athletes throughout the country. Our summer camp series is a way to share the invaluable lessons that he taught us both on and off the playing field. Our staff is comprised of those who have followed in his footsteps and are playing the game at its highest levels and like Nick believe in giving back. Participating in these camps will allow us the ability to help those who are dealing with the hardships and realities of cancer. As a parent, I am very proud to what my boys have built in the game of lacrosse; my hope is that your children will be inspired to pick up the ball where our Nick left off.” Cheryl Colleluori, HEADstrong President and Nick’s Mom

Duke’s Lacrosse Club Announces its Annual Peter Ortale Award Winners: from left, Ryan Granger, Penncrest HS and Marquette Univ; Matt Binnion, Harriton HS and Richmond Univ; Amir Fluellen, Shipley School and Salisbury University

The scholarship awards of $1,000 may be used toward their college expenses. Granger (defenseman) redshirted at Marquette this year, Binnion (defenseman) redshirted at Richmond and Fluellen (midfielder) was a valuable reserve for the Division III National champion Sea Gulls.

The Award was created both to honor Ortale – a former Duke’s player and Penn Charter standout who passed away while working at the World Trade Center in the 9-11 terrorist act – and to support the Duke’s mission to support tradition, sportsmanship and community service.

Granger, Binnion and Fluellen were chosen for their positive attributes and contributions to the Duke’s LC. Ortale, a Penn Charter graduate, starred at Duke. Ortale was 37 years old and working as a securities broker for Euro Brokers Inc. when the World Trade Center was attacked.

Granger and Binnion were first-team All-Central League First-Team picks in 2016 and Fluellen was a First-Team All-Friends Schools League selection. In addition, Binnion was a Second-Team All-Phillylacrosse.com selection and Granger was a Third-Team pick as well as an All-EPLCA pick.

Youth lacrosse: Ridley wins U15 title at Lax Max (MD)

The Ridley 8th graders won the Lax Max U15 Travel division held last weekend in Westminster, MD.

Rildey wins the U15 championship

Ridley beat the Lumberjack, 4-3, with 10 seconds left in overtime to win the championship. Ridley lost to the Lumberjacks the previous day, 6-5, but in the championship got great faceoff and wing play from Nick Falcucci and Dom Pisselli while neutralizing one of the Lumberjack’s strengths at the X.

Jake Bosak was strong in goal, making many key saves down the stretch. The attack of Gavin Kingsborough, George Wills and Blaise Harris pressured the Lumberjack defensemen, but the opposing goalie was very quick frustrating the Ridley offense.

After a timeout in the defensive end, coach Matt Flynn drew up a clear that worked perfectly, and Dom Piselli found Gavin Kingsborough on the doorstep as time ran down who buried the shot for the win.

Rounding out the Ridley squad was Josh Hagan, Jacob Berhle, Jimmy Reynolds, Evan Zappone, David Barclift, Nate Sheeran, Jesse Robinson, Joseph McNamara and Gabe Noel who all contributed to the title.

US Lacrosse has announced the addition of 12 college players, and one additional goalie, to the pool of candidates trying out for the 2018 U.S. men’s national team. The tryouts will be held July 10-12 at the new U.S. national teams training center at US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md.

“Initially, a group of 60 players were identified and selected from a large application pool,” said Kevin Ankrom, director of high performance for US Lacrosse. “After the completion of the 2017 college season, there was an opportunity to identify some additional collegiate athletes to invite to our player pool. I believe that we have added a number of outstanding players to our pool to give them a look and experience of a U.S. team tryout. This opportunity also gives us a mechanism to establish and identify our high performance athlete pathway, which will tie into our high performance strategy for the national team program moving forward.”

Following the initial round of tryouts, U.S. head coach John Danowski and his staff will follow up with additional tryouts and training weekends at US Lacrosse on the weekends of Sept. 1-4 and Oct. 6-9 in preparation for next summer’s Federation of International Lacrosse World Championship. The FIL Men’s World Championship will be held in Netanya, Israel from July 12-21, 2018.

Since 1967, the U.S. has won gold or silver medal at every men’s international world championship in field lacrosse. The U.S. won gold in 1967, 1974, 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2010. The U.S. finished as the runner-up to Canada in 1978, 2006 and 2014.

The U.S. men’s national team trains and plays using best-in class products provided by Nike (apparel and footwear), Cascade (helmets), STX (equipment), Warrior (equipment) and SISU (mouthguards). In addition to these partners, Greenfields, MedStar Health, Nationwide, Sports Force Parks and SweatX are official sponsors of Team USA.

Encore Lacrosse is accepting applications from boys in the classes of 2017 through 2021 for a life-changing lacrosse immersion experience of training, service and cultural development in Ecuador.

Encore Lacrosse – led by former Lower Merion standout and Duke’s Lacrosse coach John Christman – has traveled all over the globe with the mission of expanding the game since 2010. Its international goals are to promote the game of lacrosse, help make it a permanent fixture within the cultural fabric of the areas visited. Previous trips to Japan, Colombia, Uganda and Germany have all resulted in a sustained relationship where the missions of both parties continue to be met and upheld.

Our travels down to Ecuador will have a major focus on men’s lacrosse training, with professional lacrosse players’ and coaches’ sessions each morning to start our day. This is what makes the Encore experience unique: we meet the needs of our lacrosse players who are serious about getting better every day on the field.

After our training sessions are done each day, we will be in the hands of the Asociacion Ecuatoriana de Lacrosse run by Juan Marquez de la Plata. Juan was instrumental in starting lacrosse in Mexico and has been coaching high school lacrosse in the Northern California for 20+ years. Our community service efforts will be met here with a long lasting effect!

Our mission is to visit schools and universities in Guayaquil and introducing the game to as many as possible. Following the Federation of International Lacrosse guidelines, Encore will be hosting the first ever lacrosse match in Guayaquil. The sustainability of our efforts will come to fruition by working to find a permanent director of lacrosse operation on the ground in Ecuador. This director of lacrosse will be supported by Encore, fundraising initiatives and the FIL. More information on Asociacion Ecuatoriana de Lacrosse can be found by clicking here.

In between training and community service, the adventure will start with eating local cuisine, sightseeing, and immersing ourselves fully in Ecuadorian culture. Visiting the Galapagos Islands will be a once in a lifetime experience and a highlight of the trip. From start to finish, this trip will be the best to date, and that is why we are only choosing applicants that are serious about their lacrosse development, open to learning from new and different cultures and have a keen urge to give back.

From Press Release

Marc Bushong (Washington Twp-NJ) became the first player in Gwynedd Mercy University Men’s Lacrosse History to be named a United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III Scholar All American as the organization announced its recipients.

The USILA Scholar All-America Program was established to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities. The USILA Selection Committee selects an overall team representing Division I, II and III with the criteria as such:

A Scholar All-American must be nominated by his coach and be a student with a senior year academic standing and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale). He will have behaved in a manner that has brought credit to himself, his institution, and to college lacrosse both on and off the field. He must also be an All-American, a member of a North/South team, or an outstanding league or conference player.

Head coach Dana Lindstrom reveled in the award for his graduated senior. “Marc has been a shining example of what the student athlete experience should look like throughout his career. He has excelled in the classroom and on the field for his entire career. The leadership and example that he has provided for his teammates will be seen for years to come. Marc is a remarkable young man whose character and desire to be the best has helped make him the most decorated player in program history. It has been a honor and a privilege to work with him for the past four years.”

Among the accomplishments for his career: Member of Lambda Nu, and Chi Alpha Sigma honor societies, Team Captain, 2017 CSAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, 2017 Gwynedd Mercy University Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, Four-time CSAC All-Academic Team, 2016 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All Area Team Men’s Lacrosse Performer of the Year, 2014 CSAC Rookie of the Year, 2017 CSAC Defensive Player of the Year, Four-time CSAC First-Team All-Conference Selection at close defense, and a 2016 and 2017 ECAC First-Team Selection

Bushong holds program records for caused turnovers in a career and season, and ground balls by a defenseman and was a four-year starter who played in every game during his career.
