From Press Release

The Tewaaraton Foundation has announced University of Maryland attackman Matt Rambo (La Salle, Duke’s LC) and University of Maryland midfielder Zoe Stukenberg as the men’s and women’s winners of the 17th annual Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour. The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and top female college lacrosse players in the United States.

This is the first time in the award’s history that two players from the same school have won the award in the same year.

The all-time points and goals leader in Maryland’s prestigious history, Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Matt Rambo led the Terps to their first national championship since 1975 and fourth
straight Final Four appearance. The three-time USILA All-American helped the Terrapins to a Big Ten Championship and NCAA Tournament No. 1 overall seed for a second consecutive season. In the process, he became the first Terp to notch more than 40 goals and 40 assists in a single season, and earned the USILA Lt. Raymond J. Enners Outstanding Player Award.

Rambo’s 87 points and 45 assists were best in the Big Ten and good for third and fourth in the nation, respectively. The senior attackman from Glenside, Pa., is Maryland’s first men’s Tewaaraton winner, the program’s second finalist (Joe Walters, 2006) and the first winner from the Big Ten Conference.

The five men’s finalists were University of Denver faceoff specialist Trevor Baptiste, University at Albany attackman Connor Fields, Yale University attackman Ben Reeves and Loyola (Md.)
University attackman Pat Spence, and Rambo.

Maryland co-captain Zoe Stukenberg led the Terps to a 23-0 record, including the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles, No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, a ninth consecutive trip to the Final Four and 14th national championship—the program’s third in four years. A first-team IWLCA All-American, the senior was named Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and was a Big Ten and NCAA All-Tournament Team honoree. The Ellicott City, Md., native ranked in the top three of every statistical category for the Terps, with 53 goals, 31 assists, 84 points, a team-best 48 ground balls, 74 draw controls and 21 caused turnovers—all of which were career highs. She continues the Terrapins’ six-year run of Tewaaraton winners (eighth all-time), following Katie Schwarzmann (2012, 2013) and Taylor Cummings (2014, 2015, 2016).

The five women’s finalists were University of Maryland defender Nadine Hadnagy, Princeton attacker Olivia Hompe, University of North Carolina midfielder Marie McCool 9Moorestown), Stony Brook University attacker Kylie Ohlmiller, and Stukenberg.

“We are honored to recognize Matt Rambo and Zoe Stukenberg as talented individuals and student-athletes who perfectly represent the Tewaaraton Award and the sport of lacrosse,” said Jeffrey T. Harvey, chairman of the Tewaaraton Foundation. “Matt’s historic season helped the Terps win their first NCAA title in 42 years, and Zoe’s leadership and comprehensive play helped Maryland continue its amazing run of success in women’s lacrosse.”

Penn Charter 2017 attackman Luke Stansfield has made a commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Drexel University.

Luke Stansfield profile:

Luke Stansfield

High school: Penn Charter

Grad year: 2017

Position: Attack

College committed to: Drexel University

Club team: Braveheart

Lacrosse honors: 1st Team All-Inter-Ac Sr Year, 2nd Team Jr and Soph Year. 58 goals, 34 assists senior year; 111 career goals

Expected major: Engineering

Why did you choose Drexel? “Coach (Brian) Voelker and Drexel made me feel at home. I was born and raised in Philadelphia and there is no place other than Drexel that would allow me to thrive both in the classroom and on the lacrosse field.”

Highlights from 2017 season: “We had a good season, one where we found ourselves in contention for the league title in the middle of April. This is something that a lot of Penn Charter teams in the past could not accomplish. We also had some huge wins against Haverford, Episcopal, Radnor, and unfortunately lost to Malvern in overtime. Overall, it was a great year for Penn Charter Lacrosse, and we have something to build on in the future. A whole new brand of coaches mixed with a group of young, talented players calls for better seasons in the near future.”

Thank You:
“I want to thank my parents for all of the money, sweat, and dedication they have put into my summer and high lacrosse experiences; without my parents I would not be able to play the game I love.

“I also would like to thank Penn Charter for the position it has put me in, and lastly Coach McDonough. He pushed me to be the best person and lacrosse player I could possibly be for the past 4 years, and for that I cannot thank him enough.”

Other school considered: Cleveland State, Saint Joe’s

-Specialized drills to expose and correct issues to common “trouble shots” for goalies (Off-hip, hard bouncers, shots off of feeds, etc)
-Full and Half-field clearing drills that focus not only on stickwork, but the concepts that make clearing easier for goalies and their teammates.
-Lots and lots of “live” shots from College and Post-College shooters (adjusted to the age/ability of the goalie in the cage)

PIAA Class AAA boys’ quarterfinals: CB East stuns No. 1 La Salle, 8-6

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 6/3/17

Many would have said that David slayed Goliath today when Central Bucks East toppled La Salle, 8-6, in the PIAA Class AAA quarterfinals at Methacton High.

Liam Rosenthal

But not CB East sophomore goalie Liam Rosenthal.

“We just beat a really good team, but we have a really good team,” he said. “To everyone that doubted us – we didn’t listen to them. We are on our own path.”

That path has led the Suburban One National Conference champion Patriots into the PIAA semifinals for the first time ever. East (18-5) will play Avon Grove, a 10-5 winner over Garnet Valley in the second game at Methacton. That game will be held Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.

The Pats’ stunning win featured a 7-1 run that erased an easy 3-1 La Salle (21-2) lead, clutch goaltending by the diminutive Rosenthal (11 saves) and a suffocating defense that held the No. 1 ranked Explorers to one goal for an amazing stretch of almost three periods. Also Michael Ott neutralized La Salle All-American face-off specialsit, winning 7 of 16 draws.

“We stunned everyone,” said Rosenthal. “Underdog? Nope! That’s not what we thought. We did what we do in practice every day; it is routine for us. We play that way.”

East’s defense of Bryan McIntosh, Joe Thiroway and Drew Bethke, LSMs John Gallow and Conor Larkin and defensive middies Jake Ventresca and Collin Stein was physical and consistent in keeping La Salle’s attack off balance.

Bryan McIntosh

“Going into this game we were major underdogs,” said McIntosh (3GBs, 2 CTs), who had the task of playing All-American attackman Brett Baskin. “They had everything to lose and we thought we were as athletic as them.

“We felt everything they did came through Baskin. I tried to force him to his left. When he is out of the game, their offense comes down to a different level.”

Ryan Brown led the Pats with three goals while Ryan Bullotta and Alec Bracken scored twice. Brant Billingsly had the eight goal, which made it 8-4 with 8:31 to play. La Salle scored two in the next 3 minutes, but could not convert over the final four minutes of play.

“We practiced all week situational for what we were going to experience today,” said East coach Bruce Garcia. “Everything we thought we were going to get, we did. Obviously, they are a well-coached team – no ifs, and or buts. They have been here before, but we have played some of the best teams in the state and we felt we belonged here.

“Whether we win from this point on, we don’t know, but we are sure as heck going to try.”

La Salle had taken a 3-1 lead on goals by Chris Mockaitis, Chris Hladczuk (three tallies) and Baskin. But Bracken scored his second to make it 3-2 early in the second period and Bullotta tied it before the half while Rosenthal kept his team even.

Bullotta and Brown made it 5-3 and after Hladczuk scored, Brown tallied again to make it 6-4 after three periods. Brown and Billingsly made it 8-4 in the fourth.

Joe Thiroway

For Thiroway, the win had even more meaning – his grandmother passed away this morning.

“I played for her,” he said. “She is up there and the reason I played well and that we won.

“I am so happy for our team. It was a team win. All the pressure was one them. We feel like we are capable of beating anyone on any given day.”

Hladczuk offered no excuses

“I just think we weren’t moving the ball through X and we weren’t playing unselfish lacrosse like we played all year,” he said. “We had trouble in all facets; they beat us in all facets. Our defense locked down, but our offense didn’t take singles, didn’t move the ball through X and didn’t move the ball quickly. That’s the bottom line.”

“These are my 40 bothers, they are my family. We started working out in the fall shooting, lifting to old school rock. This is the worst feeling in lacrosse I’ve had in my whole life. I am going to watch the film and learn from it.”

It’s never a great surprise to see Jeff Conner garnering a ton of defensive attention from defenses.

Henderson’s Nick Mascetti

When you’ve got back-to-back 100-point seasons, including more than 130 this year, you’re going to draw attention. West Chester Henderson’s defense had the added bonus of seeing the Virginia commit twice earlier this year, so the Warriors knew that if they could contain Conner and his superb ability to elevate his teammates’ games, they’d have a good chance of beating the Panthers in Saturday’s teams’ PIAA Class AA quarterfinal at West Chester East.

Consider it handled. Ryan Mitchell led a strong defensive effort from the Warriors’ back end and Luke Wiernan won 15 of 19 faceoffs as Henderson downed the Panthers, 9-6, to earn a spot in Tuesday’s semifinals. The Warriors will take on Mars, a 15-14 double overtime winner over Hershey, at a place and time to be determined.

“I think we all played good team defense and keeping our sticks up is one of the best things we can do,” Mitchell said. “I practice it a lot at my club team, Fusion, and we do it a lot at Henderson practice. I think keeping your stick up is one of the best ways to play defense.

“(Conner) is one of the better kids in the area and he can feed the ball and shoot from anywhere, so our main target was to take him out of the play and make their other players beat us. They have a strong team, but I think we just outplayed them.”

There was little doubt about it. The Panthers held a 3-2 edge after one quarter when Conner scored twice and Will Huestis (two assists) also scored, but that was just the start. Wierman’s big day helped the Warriors maintain possession all day – his goal to start the second half didn’t hurt, either – and Henderson’s offensive patience paid off in spades.

Henderson’s Ryan Mitchell

The Warriors got goals from seven different players, led by two goals and two helpers from Dylan Teeter and two goals and an assist from Nick Mascetti.

“Faceoffs and defense are really our game, and when Wierman is controlling the ball, our offense gets just enough to put in some goals and get the win,” Mascetti said. “We really started running the fast break more. I think we had two or three fast-break goals. Right when we started getting our legs moving a little bit, we started taking advantage of the fast breaks.”

Conner and Chris Rosini each had two goals for Strath Haven, while Vincey Palermo was strong in goal with 11 saves. Despite that, simple mistakes doomed the Panthers’ hopes at a state title.

“You can separate sports into a couple of different things,” Strath Haven coach Jef Hewlings said. “In lacrosse, it’s catching and throwing and getting ground balls. You saw how many times we had opportunities and we didn’t catch the ball.

“You’re not going to beat Henderson that way. Their game plan was to push us around and see if we could respond, and we didn’t really respond that well.”

Avon Grove shuts down Garnet Valley, 10-5; will play CB East in semifinals

Avon Grove has all facets of its game working Saturday afternoon during a PIAA Class 3A quarterfinal playoff game at Methacton High School.

AG’s Bryce DeMuth

The Red Devils jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and used strong defense, clutch goaltending and superb work at the face-off X to topple Garnet Valley, 10-5, and earn a trip to Tuesday’s semifinals against Central Bucks East – the surprise 8-6 winner over La Salle.

That game will also be held at Methacton at 4 p.m. The Devils (21-2) have beaten CB East (18-5) twice this year, 8-3 on April 8 and then 10-9 in the District 1 semifinals.

“We came in here with high energy,” said Avon Grove senior attackman Brendan Harman, who had four goals. “We were all focused. We really wanted to win this game. We know when we play our game, we can beat anybody in the state.

“We focused on Garnet. We clicked all around. We wanted to be patient on offense and lock down on ‘D’. We were outworking them on ground balls. It was good to see us play like that in a big game.”

Junior Joey Borcky had two goals and three assists and sophomore Zach Augustine netted a pair of goals for the Red Devils. Junior midfielder Jake Smith and junior midfielder Scooter Whiteside each had single tallies while senior midfielder Doug Jones handed out two assists.

Senior goalie Kevin Malone totaled 11 saves and junior faceoff specialist Nate Hammond controlled possessions by taking 14 of 19 from the X, including a 10-0 stretch in the second half.

The Red Devils held a 5-2 lead at halftime before pulling away during the second half of play despite strong work by Garnet Valley goalie Jason Rose (12 saves).

During one stretch early in the third period,Rose made three consecutive saves while facing pressure from the Red Devils. On the third stop, Rose cleared the ball to midfield himself before passing off to a teammate.

For Garnet Valley, Evan Trizonis had goals and an assist and Hunter Baar, Jake D’Annunzio and Jake Morin each scored once.

AG’s Brendan Harman

On April 13, Avon Grove defeated Garnet Valley, 7-4, but the Jags were without three-time All-American Matt Moore (coming back from knee injury). On Saturday the Devils’ defense, which features Bryce DeMuth, Brayden Peck, Alex Muller, Jerad Wilson and James Chastain and defensive middie Dylan Poole, held Moore and fellow All-American Jacob Buttermore to one assist.

“Going into the game, I knew he (Moore) was one of the best kids I ever covered,” said De Muth. “It was exciting. All of my teammates helped me. We double-teamed. I couldn’t have done it alone. It was a great feeling. I love covering him.

“We came in here all focused. We had a lot of energy. We wanted to win this game. He (Moore) is a great player, a great guy. But I feel we have one of the best defenses in the state.”

DeMuth said the Devils re-focused after bowing to Conestoga, 14-12, in the District 1 championship.

“In the district finals game, we didn’t play so well,” he said. “We kind of blamed ourselves for that loss. But we rallied around each other and came back.”

Garnet Valley veteran coach Frank Urso’s Jags finished at 18-6 and shared the Central League title – their third shared championship in a row. He put the game and season in perspective for 2017.

“They (the Red Devils) got a couple (goals) early,” said Urso. “They got out in front. This is state time. They played a great game. They were aggressive. They did a great job of possessing the ball and they were patient. They did all the things you need to do.

“This is what it is all about. Somebody wins and somebody loses. What else can you ask for?”

Staff Report

Springfield-Delco outscored Allentown Central Catholic, 9-2, over the final two and a half periods and claimed a 12-9 victory over the Vikings Saturday in a PIAA Class AA quarterfinal at Gov. Mifflin High School.

The District 1 champion Cougars (20-3), who won the last year’s PIAA crown when it was for one classification, advance to the semifinals Tuesday against District 12 champion Lansdale Catholic. The Crusaders also won by a 12-9 score, over District 2 champion Crestwood.

The Vikings (22-2) closed a standout year; they claimed Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 titles and set a school record for wins in a season.

“I was really impressed with their offense,” said Springfield-Delco coach Tom Lemieux. “I made sure our kids understand there are four quarters and instead of panicking they showed a lot of poise.”

Led by EPC MVP Joe Wolf (three goals, two assists), ACC bolted to a quick 4-0 lead and later led, 7-3, with 6:25 left in the first half on a tally by Wolf.

But Springfield scored three times to close the half and tied it, 7-7, midway through the third period. Allentown CC went ahead on a Wolf-to-Tom Murphy goal, but Mike Vent (two goals) tied it with 2:28 left in the third period and Joe DeBernardi (four goals) put the Cougars ahead off a feed from Kyle Long (one goal, six assists).

Jack Spence (two goals) made it 10-8 and after Wolf drew the Vikes within 10-9, DeBernardi’s fourth made it 11-9 with 5:38 to play.

James Spence had 12 saves for the Cougars and Mike Tulski added two goals.

Matthew Marker had two goals and an assist and Zack Nelson scored twice for Allentown Central Catholic.

Lansdale Catholic 12, Crestwood 9

The Crusaders (18-4) scored the game’s final four goals and advanced to meet Springfield-Delco in Tuesday’s semifinals at Methacton High (6 p.m.).

Mike Basilii (two goals, one assist) scored the tying goal from Joe Walsh (three goals, one assist) with 1:49 to play in the third and Ryan Flanegan (four goals) put LC ahead for good with 8:39 to play. Grady Kelly and Basilii added clinching goals.

Nick Heiler won 16 of 22 face offs for LC and had two goals.

Anthony Caporuscio had five goals and an assist for Crestwood (15-8)

Class AAA

Conestoga 12, Manheim Township 6

The Pioneers (21-3) raced to a 4-0 first-period lead and advanced to the semifinals Tuesday vs. Mt. Lebanon (District 7 runner-up) at Cumberland Valley (noon). Mt. Lebanon, which has won five of its last six games after starting out 8-8, toppled State College, 11-4.

Tommy Sopko (79 goals overall this year) had four goals and one assist and Nick Braendel scored twice while James Reilly won 12 of 19 face-offs for the Pioneers.

Bryce Hutchinson and Grayson Sallade each had two goals for Manheim and Caton Johnson posted eight saves.
