PIAA boys’ AAA: @sprlax rebounds from slow start to top Trinity

There was an aura of discomfort in the Springfield-Delco fan section at Penncrest High less than five minutes into Tuesday’s PIAA Class AA tournament opener against Trinity.

Springfield-Delco’s Pat Clemens

Down by three goals on three shots, especially when you’re the defending PIAA champion, tends to lead to a little nervousness. Thankfully for the Cougars, though, it also means that there’s plenty of experience in big games and not much reason to worry when things don’t go their way.

Kyle Long dished out a whopping seven assists and scored once and Mike Tulskie and Ben Garcia each fired home hat tricks as Springfield-Delco (19-3) downed Trinity, 12-5, after erasing an early 3-0 deficit. The Cougars advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal to play District 11 champion Allentown Central Catholic, which walloped Lower Dauphin, 15-1. Time and location are to be determined.

“We’re kind of made for this type of situation,” Springfield All-American defenseman Pat Clemens said. “We get preached to all the time from our coaches about how when other teams go on runs, we’ve got to be able to stop that. We need to be able to answer and I think we were able to do that when we regrouped.”

Of course, it helps to have Long running the offensive show. The Maryland verbal’s vision is rivaled by none in the area, and he’s not afraid to take chances. He set up Ben Garcia for back-to-back goals to get Springfield going and never looked back.

His lone tally of the night gave him his 300th career point as he became just the second Cougar to ever reach that mark after 1992 alumnus Greg Campbell did it. Campbell finished with 324 career points, a mark that Long could theoretically eclipse as soon as a potential state championship game.

Springfield-Delco’s Kyle Long

Even if it has to wait until next year, the record won’t be for, well, long, as Long will have plenty of opportunities to put it out of reach. He’s deadly, particularly as a passer, from anywhere on the field. That stems from having experience as both a midfielder and an X attackman, which means that there’s no spot on the field where defenses can feel safe.

“It’s a great class to be a part of,” Long said after passing 2015 alumnus and Lehigh starting midfielder Lucas Spence’s mark of 297 points. “I played middie throughout grade school and freshman year, so I have experience up top, and I have experience behind from this year and last year.

“I think that’s what’s so good sometimes. I’m versatile, I can go up top, behind, on the wing. It’s tough to guard a guy at all different spots.”

The defenses that have gone up against him can testify to that. Long elevates the play of those around him and can turn anyone into a legitimate scoring threat by drawing double teams, even behind the cage. On a rare occasion, he’ll turn the ball over by trying something too difficult, even for him. It’s the tradeoff you’ve got to accept to get assists by the bushel and a guy who makes everyone better.

“It’s crazy, because sometimes, you take (him) for granted,” Springfield coach Tom Lemieux said. “I’m hard on him and I think that he knows that it’s because I think he’s so good. His vision is just unmatched.

“I’ve never seen a kid with that type of vision. I love him. He’s come a long way and he’s a hell of a player. We’re just lucky that he’s on our side.”

Trinity was just the latest team to find itself agreeing with Lemieux.

PIAA Class AAA boys: @LaSalle_Sports topples @SFLacrosse, 14-3

It would be easy for La Salle’s lacrosse team to look ahead. Last year’s state runner-up entered the PIAA tournament Tuesday as a Top 10 team in all national rankings and by most observers as the favorite in the AAA field.

La Salle’s Anthony Giuliani

But the Explorers say they are not looking any further than their next obstacle.

“Our mentality is to look to the next game, the next practice and the next play – in my case towards the next face off – whatever,” said La Salle All-American senior face-off specialist Anthony Giuliani after his team eliminated Spring-Ford, 14-3, Tuesday night at Plymouth Whitemarsh in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA tournament.

The win advanced the Explorers (21-1) to Saturday’s quarterfinals against District 1 fourth-place finisher Central Bucks East at Methacton High (1 p.m.). CB East defeated District 11 champion Parkland, 7-5.

Giuliani won 15 of 18 face-offs and Chris Hladczuk led a potent attack with four goals as La Salle scored the final nine goals of the game.

Brett Baskin added three goals and Matt Clibanoff had a pair while Ethan LaMond and Logan Lazasz each had a goal and an assist and Mike Clibanoff (six saves) and Matt McLaren (four saves) kept the District 1 No. 6 seed Rams (19-4) scoreless for the final two and a half periods.

“We came out probably – I am not sure if this is possible – too excited,” said Giuliani. “But once we settled down we took care of business. We’re looking forward to playing another day.”

SF’s Danny Cassidy

Spring-Ford senior All-American midfielder Danny Cassidy, who had one goal, had mixed emotions about the close of the season. He noted that the Ram seniors got to enjoy four straight Pioneer Athletic Conference championships and the school’s first PIAA berth.

“It was a great season, with a lot of firsts for some,” said Cassidy, who will play at Notre Dame after first committing to Boston University. “We had four years of winning the PAC and we made it to states for the first time.

“It didn’t end the way we wanted, score-wise. We tried to slow it down and possess the ball; they just wore us down. But it was a great season and the guys worked hard and should do great next season.”

.@Israel_Lacrosse unveiled as host for 2018 FIL World Lacrosse Championships

From Press Release

Israel has been officially announced as the host nation for the 2018 FIL Men’s World Lacrosse Championships. In a special press conference Netanya Mayor, Miriam Feirberg-Ikar and Israel Lacrosse Executive Director Scott Neiss unveiled that Israel’s city of Netanya will host the sport’s pinnacle competition that will include 50 participating countries and more than 5,000 fans from all over the world between July 12-21, next summer.

Netanya Mayor Miriam Feirberg-Ikar is presented a Team Israel jersey by players Ori Bar David (left) and Jacob Silberlicht.

Israel’s opportunity to host the World Lacrosse Championship comes in light of the country’s recent success in the international arena, in which Israel won second place in the 2016 ELF European Championships and seventh place in the most recent FIL World Championships in 2014.

Israel has become the fastest growing nation in the sport, with eight competing cities and hundreds of players up and down the country, which placed Israel as one of the leading candidates for the World Championship in 2018. Israeli teams have competed in every Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) and European Lacrosse Federation (ELF) event since their debut in 2012.

After Manchester, England withdrew from hosting the World Championship, Israel stepped in and submitted its first-ever bid to host the games in Netanya. This is the very first time since the competition’s inception in 1967 that a country outside of the US, Canada, England and Australia has hosted the Championship and signifies a major expansion of the sport, both in Israel and globally.

The 2018 FIL Men’s World Lacrosse Championships is also set to be the largest event of its kind to ever take place, with a proposed 50 countries trumping the 2014 total of 38 in Denver, Colorado.

Netanya was chosen to host the event due to the city’s achievements in sport and its success in hosting a variety of international competitions, including the European Swimming Championships, World Surfing Championships, international tennis tournaments and European Football Championships (under 21).

“It’s a true honor and testament to the Israel Lacrosse Association, our Board, our Membership and our Supporters that we are to be hosting the sport’s pinnacle event next summer,” said Scott Neiss, Executive Director of the Israel Lacrosse Association. “The success of Israel Lacrosse both internationally, that sees us ranked seventh in the world and the domestic infrastructure we’ve established at grassroots level here in Israel, put us in good standing when submitting our bid to host the FIL World Championships and we’re delighted to showcase our country, our facilities, and the spirit of Israel to the world.”

“Israel who became a member in 2011 has very quickly marched up the leaderboard, not only at our world events, where they ranked 7th in Denver in 2014, but they have also created a model domestic development plan, which is something that all of our new members can aspire to,” said Stan Cockerton, President of the Federation of International Lacrosse. “We are all confident that the 2018 World Championships in Israel will be an event that players, coaches, fans and all our members around the world can be proud of.”

PIAA Class AAA boys: Central Bucks East gains 7-5 win over District 11 champion Parkland

Central Bucks East used suffocating defense to claim a 7-5 win Tuesday night over District 11 champion Parkland in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA tournament at Northampton High.

The CB East defense stood out in Tuesday’s win – pictured, from left, are Liam Rosenthal, Bryan McIntosh, Joe Thiroway, Drew Bethke

The Patriots (fourth seed out of District 1) showing no ill effects from consecutive one-goal losses to earn an opening round win over the District 11 champion Trojans. East fell to Avon Grove in the district semifinals (10-9) and then dropped a 12-11 decision to Garnet Valley in the third place game.

“You come off of two losses – they’re one-goal games against some of the best lacrosse teams in the state,” CB East coach Bruce Garcia said. “We’re in this, and we’re able to play with some of the best teams in the state. There’s no reason why we can’t win games against these people.

“Tonight, although Parkland was very well coached, a very disciplined team and very athletic, we came out on top by two goals. They had an early lead on us, but after that, we never looked back.”

Central Bucks East (17-5) will face District 12 champion La Salle, the defending state runner-up, in Saturday’s quarterfinal round at Methacton High at 1 p.m. La Salle advanced with a convincing 14-3 win over Spring-Ford. Click here for story on La Salle’s win.

The Trojans (20-3) took a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game, but East answered with a pair of goals to go on top 2-1. Parkland knotted the score in the closing minute of the opening quarter only to watch East score a pair of goals in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 4-2 lead. The Patriots led the rest of the way.
The strong start represented a sharp contrast from the previous two games that saw the Patriots fall into an early hole and then spent the rest of the game playing catch-up.

East’s defense limited a Trojan squad that came into Tuesday night’s game averaging 14.7 goals a game to just five. It was Parkland’s lowest point total of the season.

“Everyone did their job,” Garcia said. On face-offs, Michael Ott (9 of 13) was outstanding, but that’s his job.
“On defense, Joey Thiroway and Bryan MacIntosh shut down their top attackmen to no goals. We double poled at midfield, and both of those double poles – one didn’t have a shot, didn’t have an assist, didn’t have a ground ball, and the other one didn’t have any goals. Liam Rosenthal (8 saves) in the cage stood up real big. They all did their jobs.”

Offensively, Ryan Brown came up big for the Patriots, scoring a game-high four goals.

“Ryan did outstanding, but he’s given that by the presence of a strong defense and the presence of a strong face-off squad that keeps possession of the ball,” Garcia said. “If you don’t have possession, you can’t score”

In addition to Brown, Ryan Stout, Alec Bracken and Conor Larkin each added single goals.

Ott had a team-high six ground balls, and Jake Kueny had three. Scooping up one each were Thiroway, Ryan Bullotta, McIntosh and Colin Stein. Ryan Schmidt and John Galow both had one caused turnover.

“Everyone has bought into the program, they’ve bought into the second season,” Garcia said. “In other years, I had players sign contracts. This year we just talked about buying into the start of a new season.

“This is their season. Through the captains, they contribute to how the pre-game works, how we practice. They take ownership and it’s working. We got down against Avon Grove and Garnet Valley, but we don’t let that shake us. We continue to play the game until 48 minutes are up.

East’s win over Parkland came in the third game of a lacrosse tripleheader. All three games pitted District 1squads against teams from District 11. District One was 3-0 as Owen J. Roberts girls’ team routed Easton 20-8 and Garnet Valley defeated Parkland 15-10 in girls’ action.

“We’re still playing lacrosse where other schools were done on May 12 or 13,” Garcia said. “Every year we plan on playing a second season.

“I give a lot of kudos to the coaching staff – the offensive coaches, the defensive coaches, the special teams coaches. Joe Brodzick, Jim Mithoefer and Dan Gray – those three guys put in countless hours, and they put the players in a position to succeed.”

Garcia looks fgorward to the challenge of facing La Salle, 21-1 and the No. 1 team in the Phillylacrosse.com Rankings as well as a Top 10 team in all national polls.

“They’re a very, very good team by looking at their record,” Garcia said of the Explorers. “The scores they’re putting up, the number of All-Americans – they are without a doubt a formidable team to play, and I look forward to playing a team like La Salle that is so well-coached.

“As coaches, these kind of games are what we sign on for. I’m excited to come up with a game plan.”

Maple Zone and and Heritage Lacrosse are pleased to offer two brand new summer indoor modified box lacrosse leagues – college and scholastic – with formats specifically designed to promote safe and fast play based on key box lacrosse fundamentals and concepts.

This adult league is primarily designed for college players home for summer break who are interested in playing fun, safe lacrosse to keep their game “tuned up” before they return to campus for field lax. For the high school players, this offers a chance to continue to improve your skills and have some fun in a fast-paced and safe environment.

The modified box rules benefit all lacrosse players. Attackmen and midfielders will learn to operate in tight spaces improving stick skills, passing and shooting accuracy. Long sticks are not allowed so all players will learn to play with their body and feet, improving approach and angle play. Goalies will work on proper box goaltending techniques, including positioning, angles, baiting, etc.

WHY PLAY BOX LACROSSE?

“American field players would really help themselves if they were exposed to a steady stream of box experience. Box lacrosse is an extremely valuable background for a young player, we need to incorporate more of the indoor skills in to the field game. It is almost a requirement to have a top player with indoor experience on your roster right now.”
– Former UVA head coach Dom Starsia

“Every Kid Should Play Box Lacrosse”
– John Desko, Head Coach Syracuse University

“If I had my choice, I would have every player under the age of 12 play box lacrosse exclusively or at least a majority of the time.”
– Bill Tierney, Denver University

Maryland’s Rambo (@LaSalle_Sports, @THE DUKESLC) becomes 1st Philly man to earn Tewaaraton Award

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 6/1/17
From Press Release and Staff Report

Maryland senior attackman Matt Rambo has climbed the ladder to the highest levels in the past few weeks – and tonight he reached a plateau never achieved before by a Philly men’s lacrosse player.

Matt Rambo accepts the Tewaaraton Award (Picture for Phillylacrosse.com)

The graduate of La Salle College High who played for the Duke’s Lacrosse Club tonight was just honored as the 2017 Tewaaraton Award winner as the nation’s top college player, the first time a Philly man has received the award. The award was presented at the Natural Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C.

Rambo led the Terrapins to their first National championship since 1975 Sunday when they toppled Ohio State, 9-6, at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA. Rambo – who earned first-team All-American – earned all-tournament honors and set many records along the way.

Rambo had 42 goals and 45 assists this year. Just recently Rambo (155 goals) broke Joe Walters’ program goal scoring record (153). He will also go down as the program’s all-time leader in points, in addition to being the only player in program history to record 40 goals and 30 assists (and he has done it two straight years).

Rambo was the Phillylacrosse.com Player of the Year in 2013 when he led La Salle to the PIAA championship. He is the second Philly player ever to win the coveted award; Princeton’s Rachael Becker (Marple Newtown) won it in 2003. Rambo also is the first player in Maryland’s storied history to win the Tewaaraton.

Rambo’s coach at La Salle, Bill Leahy, was thrilled for him:

“First wow!” said Leahy. “We’re awfully proud of him and very happy for his family. It was well deserved in all fronts, especially with his growth as a person and a student athlete. As a lacrosse player he was honored in so any ways; now this doesn’t get much better for Matt, his family and La Salle College High and La Salle lacrosse as well.”

Leahy said Rambo’s growth as a player – he became a brilliant passer and scorer from all areas of the field – and person can be traced to his roots.

“He grew into a very versatile lacrosse player and that’s a credit to his two cultures; La Salle is about your brothers and the team and Maryland is the same way,” he said. “When you put the team first it ends up coming back to you anyway.”

Rambo’s club coach, Ebe Helm, also expressed his congratulations to Rambo, who was a Dukes captain and has served as a volunteer coach with the Duke’s Young Guns and Nationals with Austin Pifani (Abington, North Carolina All-American).

“A huge congrats to Matt on winning the Tewaaraton Trophy as college’s best Men’s Player in 2017,” Helm said. “Matt is so deserving and represents the best of what Duke’s Lacrosse Club embraces in terms of being ‘Philly Tough’ and spiritually strong.

“Matt is also everything a young boy should emulate as he continues to give guidance and mentoring back as a coach to the Duke’s Young Guns and Duke’s Nationals Lacrosse Programs, amplifying the character and heart of who Matt is as both a person and a contributor to the lacrosse community.

“Matt, from his early days as an Abington Youth Lacrosse player, was special. His heart, dedication and drive were and are unmatched and along with his best buddy, Austin Pifani (Captain with Matt, UNC captain and and 1st Team All American) were driven to be the best on college’s biggest stage.

“Matt has always thrived under the pressure of lacrosse’s biggest moments and it’s been exciting to watch him fight adversity and climb the ladder to be the best as both a player and person.

“A huge Congrats to Matt’s mom and dad, Annette and Rich, as well as brother Rich and his extended family who have guided him and created the foundation for Matt to grow and excel.

“Congrats also to Bill Leahy, Tony Resch and the La Salle High School program; and coach John Tillman and the Maryland University program for such an incredible honor for Matt, his family and the Duke’s extended family who all love Matt and send him huge congrats.”
