Staff Report

Andrew Albertson won an amazing 26 of 27 faceoffs while Greg Santa-Anna, Ryan Geroulo and Luke Summers each scored three goals as host Parkland defeated Emmaus, 15-9, Thursday night for the District 11 Class AAA championship.

Parkland players that also compete for the Duke’s Lacrosse club are, left to right, Dalton Omara, Dylan Rahm, Gavin Saylor, holding District Championship Trophy; James McLaughlin and Brady Groff.

It was the first district crown for the Trojans, who improved to 21-1. The Trojans advance to the PIAA tournament, where they’ll meet Central Bucks East, the fourth-place team from District 1, at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Northampton.

Parkland seized control when it scored three straight goals (two by Santa-Anna) in the final 1:43 of the second quarter and took a 10-7 halftime lead.

Emmaus scored the first goal of the third quarter, but Parkland scored the next five.

The game endured two 30-minute delays due to lightning/thunder. The first delay happened midway through the second quarter and the next extended the halftime intermission.

Tyler Corpora paced Emmaus (13-9) with three scores.

From Press Release

Gavin McBride wasn’t a USILA All-America, even if he spent the season scoring goals at a greater rate than any college player in all America.

The Princeton senior and Haverford School alum, who was not one of the 32 attackmen named USILA first-team, second-team, third-team or honorable mention All-America earlier this week, did what he does best in the North-South all-star game Friday night. He scored and scored some more.

McBride scored four goals and added an assist to lead the North to a 22-14 win over the South in the game played at Providence College Friday. McBride scored two goals and had an assist in the first six minutes of the game alone.

The performance in the all-star game came after a season in which he scored 54 goals, the most in Princeton history, bettering the record of 53 set by U.S. Lacrosse Hall-of-Famer Jesse Hubbard 21 years ago. McBride led Division I with 3.6 goals per game and was second in total goals, one behind Albany’s Connor Fields.

Despite that, McBride was only an honorable mention All-Ivy League and honorable mention Inside Lacrosse/Media All-America and nowhere to be found on the USILA All-America teams, which did feature 32 other attackmen.

Philly players on the South roster included: Delaware’s Trupert Ortlieb (Episcopal Academy), Monmouth’s Chris Daly (Lower Merion), Penn’s Kevin Gayhardt (Episcopal Academy) and Monmouth Tyler Keen (Downingtown West) – Photo by Rene Schleicher

Princeton’s Zach Currier assisted on two of McBride’s goals and three overall and also added two ground balls and a caused turnover. Currier led all Division I middies in assists (34) and points (58) while also leading Princeton in caused turnovers, winning 56 percent of his 202 face-offs and picked up a ridiculous 130 ground balls. Currier earned first-team All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse but was only a second-team USILA selection.

The North team also got a key effort from Boston University’s Greg Wozniak (Holy Ghost Prep, 4GB, 1A, 1CT). For the South, Cole Shafer (Drexel) had four goals and an assist and Chris Daly (Lower Merion) scored once while Jake Froccaro (Villanova) had two assists.

From Press Release

The No. 1 Maryland lacrosse team secured its third straight trip to the NCAA Championship game after knocking off fifth-seeded Denver 9-8 in Saturday’s semifinals at Gillette Stadium. The game came down to the final possession, as the Terps held off the Pioneers to seal a one-goal victory.

Maryland’s Matt Rambo (La Salle, Duke’s LC) became the program’s goals leader with his first quarter goal, as his 154 all-time goals passed Joe Walters (’06) for first on the all-time list. He also now has the most points (60) since 2000 in NCAA tournament play. Rambo finished with a goal, an assist and four groundballs.

Maryland’s faceoff unit held its own against the nation’s leader in faceoff percentage in Denver’s Trevor Baptise, as Austin Henningsen and Jon Garino Jr. (Episcopal Academy, Duke’s LC) combined to go 10-for-21. Garino won 3 of 6 draws. Also, Maryland defenseman Bryce Young (St. Augustine Prep) had a groundballs and helped keep the dangerous Denver attack from exploding.

“I’m really proud of our guys and excited to continue this journey onto Monday,” said head coach John Tillman. “Couldn’t be more proud of the effort and just the resolve our guys showed today against a great Denver team…I’m just happy to get two more days with our players, and we obviously have a huge challenge ahead of us. But we’re going to try to take the next couple days here to get prepared.”

Maryland advances to Monday’s Memorial Day Championship game vs. Ohio State. Faceoff is slated for 1:00 pm and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and streamed via WatchESPN.

The final two minutes of the contest proved to be crucial, as the Terps maintained a one-goal lead with possession late. Senior Colin Heacock appeared to have a diving goal at the 1:25 mark, but it was called off after the officials signaled he was in the crease.

Maryland’s Jon Garino (Episcopal Academy, Duke’s LC) won 3 of 6 face offs vs. Trevor Baptiste, to help the Terps prevail

After Denver broke a timeout, the Pioneers looked to have the tying goal after Connor Donahue made a diving effort to score. But again, the officials called a crease violation, and the Terps ran out the remaining seconds as Maryland punched its ticket to its 14th all-time National Championship game.

Junior Connor Kelly led the way for the Terps offensively, notching a game-high three goals, while seniors Dylan Maltz and Colin Heacock both tallied two each to pace the Terps’ offense.

Maryland built up a 4-1 lead in the first half, before eventually heading into the break with a 5-3 advantage. The Terps continued to hold the lead into the fourth, before a goal from Denver’s Ethan Walker tied the game at eight with 10 minutes to go.

Maryland’s defense remained clutch down the stretch, with three of Dan Morris’s eight saves coming in the fourth quarter. Senior defensemen Tim Muller was also outstanding, causing three turnovers while scooping three ground balls on the day.

Salesianum School, Wilmington Friends, Cape Henlopen and Caesar Rodney advanced to the semifinals of the DIAA Boys Lacrosse State Tournament Saturday.

Five goals by Eric Pincus paced Wilmington Friends to a 7-2 win over Tower Hill. The Quakers advance to play Cape Henlopen Wednesday.

Three goals by Gregory Boyce and Erik Stankofski, and two goals by Brock Maloomian paced Cape to an 11-9 win over the Auks of Archmere. Luke D’Ambrogi scored the game-winner with 2:48 left. The Auks were led each with two goals by Xavier Glavin, Ethan Kates and Mitchell Moyer.

Meanwhile, Salesianum defeated Delaware Military Academy, 18-4, and will meet Caesar Rodney Wednesday in the semis.

Four goals by Jacob Cosden, three by Demetrius Stevenson, and two by Jared Wagonhoffer and Jared Pangle paced the Riders of Caesar Rodney to a 13-9 win over the Jaguars of Appoquinimink. CR scored the game’s final four goals and impressively avenged a 16-4 blitzing at the hands of Appo three weeks earlier.

From Press Release

Maryland men’s lacrosse senior attackman Matt Rambo (La Salle, Duke’s LC) has earned the Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award for the nation’s most outstanding player as announced by the United State Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.

Maryland’s Matt Rambo – Photo by Rene Schleicher

Rambo is just the fourth player in Maryland history to win the Enners Award, joining Episcopal Academy grad and current Springside Chestnut Hill Academy coach Brian Dougherty (1995), current Garnet Valley coach Frank Urso (1975) and Doug Schreiber (1973).

A 2017 Tewaaraton finalist, Rambo has completely shattered the Maryland record books during his illustrious career. The program’s all-time leader in points, he became the program’s leader in goals (154) when he scored Saturday in the Terps’ 9-8 win over Denver in the NCAA semifinals. He has totaled 85 points in 2017 – second-best in Maryland single-season history – and recently became the first player to total 40 goals and 40 assists in a season at Maryland.

Rambo has also played his best under the brightest lights, totaling 60 career points in 14 NCAA Tournament games. The mark is tied with Mikey Powell and Steele Stanwick for most career points since 2000.

The top-seeded Terps 15-3) are set to face the 3-seed Ohio State Monday at 1:00 pm, in the NCAA Championship at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2, in addition to a sky camera angle on ESPN3, and it can be heard on Westwood One.

From Press Release

The Salisbury University men’s lacrosse team defeated Rochester Institute of Technology, 15-7, to win the program’s 12 national title Sunday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

It is Salisbury’s second title in as many years and moves the Gulls all-time record at Gillette Stadium to 3-0 with all three wins coming in the title game.

Salisbury (22-1) was led on the defensive end by junior All-American Kyle Tucker (Downingtown East), who had five groundballs and helped limit a potent Tigers (20-3) attack that had scored at least 13 goals in 15 straight games, all wins.

At the face-off X, T.J. Logue (Salesianum School) won 6 of 11 draws and had one goal, two groundballs and a caused turnover.

The Sea Gulls were led offensively by Kevin McDermott and Carson Kalama. McDermott posted a career high in points with four from one goal and three assists and Kalama made his presence felt by posting four goals and one assist for four points. Also coming up big on the offensive end was Josh Melton as the freshman posted his frist-career hat trick.

Colin Reymann made 12 stops in cage and in front of him Cory Berry posted three caused turnovers.

The Dave Page Goalie School, 2x/month schedule, Tuesday, June 6th 4:30-7:30pm and Saturday, June 17th from 9am-Noon, for its Goalie Minicamps, at North Brandywine Middle School, north of Coatesville. For anyone who is able to make BOTH session, the Dave Page Goalie School will offer a significant discount on the 2nd session. Goalies will be broken up by age/experience, with the more experienced group working progressing to high-level concepts while the younger/newer goalies will get a healthy dose of the basics before being introduced to some fresh new drills. With a 3:1 Goalie:Coach Ratio, this will be a high-rep, fast paced day that will help all goalies take a step forward. The first hour will focus on teaching, tweaking and repping through the foundations of goalie plays; footwork, positioning, hand speed and clearing. As we move beyond the first hour, goalies will progress through a series of closely-coached drills working on skills and techniques including:
-Positioning and Technique for playing shots off the dodge, both above and below the cage.
-Specialized drills to expose and correct issues to common “trouble shots” for goalies (Off-hip, hard bouncers, shots off of feeds, etc)
-Full and Half-field clearing drills that focus not only on stickwork, but the concepts that make clearing easier for goalies and their teammates.
-Lots and lots of “live” shots from College and Post-College shooters (adjusted to the age/ability of the goalie in the cage)
Any questions can be directed to Foundationlax@gmail.com or by calling Dave Page at 484-947-3201; he is happy to talk about the training and why it is exactly what all Youth/HS goalies need.

From Press Release and Staff Report

With many Philly grads playing key roles, the Maryland men’s lacrosse team defeated Ohio State 9-6 to capture the 2017 Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship at Gilette Stadium Monday.

Philly standouts! All-tournament pick Matt Rambo (left, La Salle College High) and face-off hero Jon Garino (Episcopal Academy), who played together for the Duke’s Lacrosse Club, helped lead Maryland to its first National championship since 1975 (Photos by Rene Schleicher)

Senior face-off specialist Jon Garino (Episcopal Academy) won 10 of 14 face-offs and was named Capital One Player of the Game in a brilliant performance against Ohio State ace Jake Withers. Garino finished the tournament having won 27 of 38 draws vs. the 1st, 2md and 3rd team face-off All-Americans.

Senior Matt Rambo (La Salle), who is a favorite to win the Tewaaraton Award, had a goal and an assist and two groundballs and was named to the All-Tournament team. Rambo and Garino played for the Duke’s Lacrosse Club.

On defense, Curtis Corley (Shawnee-NJ) had two groundballs and a caused turnover while Bryce Young (St. Augustine Prep-NJ) added two groundballs.

For Ohio State, Freddy Freibott (Salesianum School) had three groundballs. Freibott also played for Duke’s LC as well as Team Mn Up.

Junior Tim Rotanz scored three goals to pace the Terps offense, while senior defender Tim Muller was named the Championship’s Most Outstanding Player.

Maryland had lost in the title game the last nine times it reached the championship game since winning it in 1975.

Jon Garino won 10 of 14 face offs

“We knew we were going to have to play our best game to have a chance to win, so I want to tip my hat to Ohio State,” said Maryland coach John Tillman. “I’m obviously very proud of our team. I’m happy for our state, our school, our students and our alums. Especially the alums, having waited so long. I think that was a big thing that motivated us was to try to bring a championship back for them, but also living in the moment, knowing that this was their time. I couldn’t be happier for our guys.”

Maryland held the Buckeye attack at bay for most of the afternoon, limiting OSU to just 25 shots while junior goalie Dan Morris made 11 saves. The Terps would score three goals in the fourth quarter to seal the three-goal victory, as Maryland captured its 12th all-time National Title and first since 1975.

Maryland took a 5-2 lead into the locker room, thanks in part to a pair of goals from junior Adam DiMillo who entered Monday’s game with just three goals on the year.

Rotanz, Maltz and Kelly all scored as well to help the Terps build up a three-goal advantage. Maryland’s defense came up with several big stops to thwart the Buckeye’s offense, which included five first half saves for Morris.

In addition to Rambo, Muller, Rotanz, Connor Kelly, Dylan Maltz and goalie Dan Morris (11 saves) were named to the all-tournament team.

Ohio State defenseman Freddy Freibott (Salesianum School) defends Maryland’s Matt Rambo (La Salle). They played together on the Duke’s LC; Freibott also played for Team Man Up

The Buckeyes scored first in a back-and-forth first 15 minutes, but Maryland answered with the final two tallies of the frame to take a 3-2 lead after the first quarter. The Terps then scored twice in the first six minutes of the second quarter to push the advantage to 5-2 at the half. After each team found the back of the net once in the third quarter, Maryland scored the first two goals of the fourth to make it an 8-3 game. Three-straight Buckeye goals cut the Terps’ advantage to 8-6 before an insurance tally in the final minute capped the scoring at 9-6.

Carey made 13 saves in the Buckeye cage, tallying double-digit save in every NCAA game this season, while Leclaire scored and added an assist. Sophomore Logan Maccani also had four groundballs and a goal.

In the First Quarter

Ohio State opened the scoring in a back-and-forth first quarter when Shanks tallied his 15th of the year at the 11:02 mark. Maryland’s Tim Rotanz answered at 5:53 but the Buckeyes’ Colin Chell put Ohio State ahead once again at 5:08. However, an Adam DiMillo goal at the 3:03 mark tied the game at 2-2 before Connor Kelly gave the Terrapins the 3-2 advantage with 59 seconds remaining in the quarter. Withers won five of six faceoffs over the first 15 minutes of play.

Maryland defenseman Curtis Corley (Sjawnee) had two groundballs and a caused turnover

In the Second Quarter
Maryland’s Dylan Maltz opened the second quarter with a goal at the 12:37 mark and DiMillo scored again at 9:43 to push the lead to 5-2, where it would remain at the half. The Terrapins held an 11-4 lead in shots in the second quarter, with Carey making three saves.

In the Third Quarter
Maccani cut into the Maryland lead with a goal at the 10:53 mark of the third quarter to make it a 5-3 contest. Rotanz answered back at 5:30 for the Terps with his second goal of the game to make it 6-3 through three quarters of play. Carey made five more saves in the third quarter as Maryland held a 12-5 advantage in shots.

In the Fourth Quarter
Maltz then tacked on his second of the game to make it 7-3 with 13:18 left to play before Matt Rambo made it an 8-3 contest at the 10:36 mark. Withers won the ensuing faceoff and found the back of the net to make it 8-4 at 10:24 and Leclaire scored his 49th goal of the year to cut the lead to 8-5 with 5:01 remaining. Pearson narrowed the advantage to 8-6 at the 2:25 mark but the Buckeyes would not be able to close the gap any further as Rotanz third of the game, an empty-net goal with 59 seconds remaining, sealed the win for the Terps.

Shots and Saves
The Buckeyes were outshot, 41-25, in the game. Carey had 13 saves, the eighth time in the last nine games he had double-digit stops, with nine in the second half vs. the Terps. He ends the season with an 8.32 goals-against average and .547 save percentage, in the Top 12 nationally.

About the camp: BaggataGuys™ Lacrosse teaches the skills of lacrosse using novel drills, concepts and language players can understand, relate to and retain – all in a high energy and supportive setting. The focus is on FUNdamentals, but with a Flair… We stress traditional staples but explore what is possible with the stick and a ball.

BaggataGuys™ training transfers knowledge, maximizes touches and develops motor coordination.
Our goal, in a condensed time frame, is to help the guys advance at an accelerated rate.
We teach ambidexterity. We set our expectations high.
We aim to increase each BaggataGuy’s lacrosse IQ and overall comfort level playing America’s native game, which our North American forebears called “Baggataway.”

This is not a cookie cutter curriculum. BaggataGuys™ training has been honed over years of collective experience by highly respected and caring parents and coaches – all of whom have played and coached at the highest level. And we have seen the results.

We know what you want to see as a parent – joy, smiles, passion, teamwork, effort, improvement, confidence and success. We have crafted the program with these things in mind. We look forward to sharing our love and passion for lacrosse with your sons and fostering a desire in them to continue playing the game at a higher level.
