Registration is open for the Casey Powell Academy boys’ lacrosse camp with LB3 on July 6-8 at the Shipley School.casey powell

Casey Powell, the MLL MVP, has a simple philosophy: “I work hard everyday to better myself in life and on the field.” He takes that philosophy to heart and is probably the best teacher this game has to offer. The reason for him being the best is because he can relate to everyone on the field – young players, coaches, parents, etc. When Casey is on the field, you will probably learn something that you have not thought of or seen before. In his own unique way he helps everyone to become better at their game.

The Casey Powell Academy offers the highest training. Our best teachers giving you their best for the week of camp. This is a great option for the player who is really working hard at taking their game to another level. Casey Powell sets the curriculum for the week and he is there to be sure the players are following through with what the plan is.

From Press Release

Major League Lacrosse today announced its weekly award winners for Week 10 of the 2015 season, naming the Charlotte Hounds’ Joey Sankey (Penn Charter, UNC) Cascade Rookie of the Week. The Hounds on Saturday snapped their six-game losing streak and ended the New York Lizards’ bid for an undefeated season with a 13-12 victory at Hofstra University’s James M. Shuart Stadium.

“It’s a huge honor to receive this award for the second time this season,” said Sankey. “But at this time it’s definitely more special as it comes after a great team win.”

In addition to Sankey’s honor, the Denver Outlaws’ John Grant Jr. earned Warrior Offensive Player of the Week, the Chesapeake Bayhawks’ Tyler Fiorito Warrior Defensive Player of the Week and Chris Mattes of the Florida Launch was name FOAthlete of the Week, presented by the Faceoff Academy. The winners are chosen by the league’s front office and are based on outstanding in-game achievements.

On Saturday versus the Lizards, Sankey scored two goals and assisted on two others. The attackman’s second goal of the night tied the game at 12 with just under five minutes remaining in regulation. Kevin Cunningham scored the game winner 1:33 later. Sankey has now tallied 22 points in just four MLL appearances this season, and his nine assists lead the Hounds offense.

“It was great to get my first MLL victory, and it came at a time when the team really needed it,” said Sankey. “We’re confident that we are improving as a team and we are building great team chemistry. It has taken us some time as we have had a lot of moving pieces, but it’s starting to click as we try and make a push for the playoffs.”

This is the fourth time this season that a Hounds player has been selected for a weekly award, including the second of the year for Sankey, who also earned Cascade Rookie of the Week honors following his Week 7 debut. Brendan Fowler was named FOAthlete of the Week, Presented by The Faceoff Academy, in Week 1 and Kevin Drew was selected as Warrior Defensive Player of the Week at the conclusion of Week 3.

Sankey and the Hounds (2-7) return home this weekend, welcoming the 5-4 Denver Outlaws to American Legion Memorial Stadium on Saturday, June 27. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00pm ET, following the Hounds

PLA, @HEADstrongFND announce that HEADstring Project donates almost 150 restrung sticks for programs in Philadelphia

From Press Release

The Philadelphia Lacrosse Association (PLA) and the HEADstrong Foundation™ are proud to report that “HEADstring Project” enabled the PLA to donate close to 150 restrung and refurbished sticks to support boys’ high school programs in the City of Philadelphia.headstrng 1

This past March, the PLA delivered 6 goalie sticks, 64 long sticks and 70 short sticks, most of them restrung with “HEADstring” mesh and fitted with new shafts, to Tom McLaughlin, Lacrosse Chair for the Philadelphia Boys Public League.

“These donations are a wonderful contribution toward our efforts to grow lacrosse in Philadelphia,” according to McLaughlin. “We were happy to help give these sticks new life in the hands of players from Frankford, Roxborough, West Philadelphia, Mastery-Shoemaker, Audenried and other Philadelphia public schools. Your generous support for the Philadelphia Public League is greatly appreciated, as always.”

The HEADstring Project (www.headstringproject.com) is a collaborative effort to get sticks into the hands of players in underserved areas of lacrosse while infusing the values and positive message associated with the HEADstrong Foundation™ and its founder, Nicholas “HEAD” Colleluori. The initiative, in its third year, allows donated sticks to be refurbished by volunteer student athletes using HEADstrong’s signature lime green mesh. Once completed, the sticks are donated by the PLA to support diversity, inclusion and the growth of lacrosse in Philadelphia.

“We continue to be excited to partner with the HEADstrong Foundation™ and are grateful for their support in helping to expand the game in the region through this program,” said Scott Growney, PLA board member and director of the HEADstrong Project. “Our hope is that the initiative continues to inspire teams and players to organize stick donation drives and volunteer to help refurbish the sticks. In doing so, they can serve their community by spreading blood cancer awareness, communicating lessons about character and determination reminiscent of HEADstrong’s namesake, and supporting lacrosse in non-traditional areas.”headstring

“We wish to thank the PLA and the Philadelphia Public League for their support and interest in helping us promote blood cancer awareness through the HEADstring Project,” said Cheryl Colleluori, HEADstrong President and Nick’s Mom. “It has been particularly exciting to see the response from several dozen high school and college players, who have volunteered their time to collect, restring and recycle sticks and support the program, all this while helping to share the HEADstrong story.”

The PLA, the HEADstrong Foundation™ and the Philadelphia Public League wish to thank the teams and volunteers who have helped with the HEADstring Project to date. The list (current through June 25, 2015) is below. Individuals, coaches and teams can register to support the program by visiting https://mytournamentregistration.com/headstring/. Thanks also to LEAPS Lacrosse, which helped distribute the sticks, and to Heritage Lacrosse, LLC for collecting sticks in connection with the annual Chapter Challenge, a youth lacrosse festival in Chester County, and for helping to implement and administer the program on behalf of the PLA.
