Loyola University Maryland head coach Charley Toomey, the Greyhounds men’s lacrosse staff and several returning players welcomed 13 newcomers to the program on Thursday at an annual luncheon before the freshmen embark on their Fall Welcome Weekend programming at the University.
Twelve freshmen and one transfer will join the locker room when fall conditioning and practices begin for the Greyhounds: Matthew Benus (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset), Thomas Berger (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), Jarett Bonser (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park), Jack Calderone (Engelwood, Colo./Cherry Creek), Charlie King (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter), Kyle LeBlanc (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan), Kevin Lindley (Darien, Conn./Darien), Collin McCarthy (Wallingford, Conn./Xavier), Aiden Olmstead (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post), Bailey Savio (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich), Sam Shafer (Rowayton, Conn./Trinity-Pawling), Devin Shewell (Baltimore, Md./Boys Latin/Syracuse) and Dan Wigley (Medford, N.J./Shawnee)
“We are very excited to welcome these young me, to campus,” Toomey said. “They have come from strong high school and club programs, and we expect continued success at the collegiate level from them.”

Before Loyola: Was an eight-time letterwinner – four each in football and lacrosse – at Shawnee High School in Medford Township, New Jersey… Scored 121 goals and had 54 assists for 175 career points… Tallied 42 goals and 23 assists as a senior in 2017, earning USLacrosse All-America honors to go with All-State, All-South Jersey, All-Burlington County, All-Group III and All-Olympic Conference First Team honors… Named Shawnee’s most valuable player and was the side’s team captain… Led the Renegades to the Olympic Conference title and an appearance in the Group III state championship game… Finished his junior season in 2016 with 42 goals and 10 assists, earning All-Phillylacrosse South Jersey, All-South Jersey, All-Burlington County and All-Olympic Conference First Team recognition, as well as All-State and All-Group III Second Team honors… Scored 22 goals and had seven assists as a sophomore as Shawnee won the state section and conference titles… Was a varsity player as a freshman, putting up 15 goals and 14 assists while the Renegades won the conference title and reached the state title game… Accomplished football player, as well, earning All-State and New Jersey Super 100 honors… Also received All-South Jersey, All-Burlington County and All-Olympic Conference First Team honors… Named to the Philadelphia Inquirer’s All-Area First Team… Finisehd career with 947 yards rushing and 160 receiving, scoring 14 touchdowns as a running back… Also had 106 tackles, six forced fumbles, three interceptions and one fumble recovered as a linebacker and defensive back… Named Brooke Irvine’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Gordon Masters’ Burlington County Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was Shawnee’s Offensive MVP in 2016… Team captain and recipient of the team’s honorary No. 44 jersey… Named the Olympic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Shawnee High School Athlete of the Year… Played club lacrosse for Tri-State and Blue Star.
Personal: Daniel James Wigley… Son of Melissa and Craig Wigley… Has two older brothers, Kyle and Justin… Kyle was a football player at Gettysburg College where Justin is a member of the men’s soccer team’s Class of 2018… Member of the National Honor Society… Graduated magna cum laude and was in the top 25 of his class… Volunteered with Special Olympics and local youth athletics.

Before Loyola: Earned four varsity letters in lacrosse at Syosset (New York) High School where he was one of the top players on Long Island… Helped the Braves win the 2015 and 2016 Nassau County Class A Lacrosse Championships and the 2015 Long Island title… Named to the All-Nassau County and County All-Academic Teams as a sophomore, junior and senior… Recognized as an Under Armour Underclass All-American in 2015 and 2016… Honored as one of Newsday’s Top-100 Lacrosse Players to watch in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and was one of the publication’s Top-25 as a senior in 2017… Twice ranked in the Top-100 of players by Recruiting Rundown… Captain of Syosset’s squad as a junior and senior… Finished his career with 152 points on 85 goals and 67 assists… Had a career-high 54 points as a senior in 2017 with 29 goals and 25 assists after recording 32 goals and 16 assists as a junior in 2016… Tallied 22 goals and 18 assists his sophomore season in 2015… Played club lacrosse for Tenacious Turtles.

Before Loyola: Was a four-year starter and letterwinner at Chatham (N.J.) High School, earning All-State First Team honors as a senior in 2017… Finished his high school career with 120 points on 80 goals and 40 assists… Named to the All-Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference First Team in 2017… Scored 25 goals and had 10 assists as a senior… Had his junior season cut short by injury, but had a standout sophomore season with 27 goals and 19 assists to earn Star-Ledger All-Sophomore honors… Played club lacrosse for Leading Edge Elite from 2014-2016.
Personal: Thomas John Berger… Son of Monica and Rich Berger… Has two brothers, Richard and Jack… Volunteered with two outreach organizations that serve area homeless… Taught “Little Laxers” youth clinic for two years… Mother, Monica, was a lacrosse player at Lynchburg College from 1984-87, helping the Hornets reach the NCAA Division III semifinals in 1985 and 1986… Father, Rich, played lacrosse at Lynchburg from 1983-84.

Before Loyola: Played five years of varsity lacrosse, and three years of varsity football, at Deer Park (N.Y.) High School… Two-time All-Suffolk County defender for the Falcons… Earned All-Division honors four times… As a defender, tallied 78 career points with 35 goals and 43 assists while picking up 248 ground balls… Finished his senior year in 2017 with 75 ground balls to go with offensive totals of 16 goals and 13 assists… Had 10 goals, 12 assists and 60 ground balls as a junior in 2016 after posting five, nine and 50 during his sophomore season… Was a finalist for Suffolk County’s Butch Dellecave Award as the area’s top student-athlete… Was a quarterback for Deer Park’s football team… Played club lacrosse for Tenacious Turtles.

Collin McCarthy Before Loyola: Earned eight varsity – four each in football and lacrosse – at Xavier High School in Middletown, Connecticut… Scored 45 goals and had 10 assists for the Falcons as a senior in 2017, earning All-Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) honors for the third-straight year… Also was a Connecticut High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) All-State honoree as a sophomore, junior and senior…Named All-Area by the New Haven Register all three seasons… Scored 31 goals and had 21 assists as a sophomore in 2015 and did not play due to injury as a junior… Helped Xavier win the SCC Championship in 2015 and was a part of the Connecticut Class LL Football State Championship team in 2014… Played club lacrosse for CT Cardinals Black.

2016 (Freshman at Syracuse University): Played in 10 games for the Orange on attack, finishing the season with seven goals on 18 shots for a .389 shooting percentage, as Syracuse won an ACC Championship… Made his collegiate debut against Siena (2/13) and scored a pair of goals on three shots… Tallied two more in his next game, a 16-7 win over Albany (2/21)… Also had two ground balls and a caused turnover against the Great Danes… Scored twice against Colgate (5/7)… Tallied a goal in the NCAA Quarterfinals against Maryland (5/21).
