Entering the game averaging six goals an outing, the St. Joseph’s University men’s lacrosse team exploded for 18 goals and the Hawks’ defense locked down its opposition for the second game in a row in an 18-6 rout of Manhattan at Gaelic Park on Saturday afternoon. With their second win this week, the Hawks improve to 2-3 while Manhattan falls to 2-3.

Junior attackman Chris Blewitt led seven Hawks in scoring with a career-high five goals, including four in the first half, while junior attackman Jason Kelly (Salesianum School) added a career-high six points on a career-high four goals and career-high two assists. Senior midfielder Kevin Reidinger added a hat trick in the victory.

Up by two after the first 15:00, the Hawks peppered the cage with six goals and held the Jaspers to just one score in the second quarter to take an 11-4 lead into the halftime break.

Reidinger (14:00) and junior attackman Patrick O’Brien (7:42) scored back-to-back SJU goals to open the third quarter, and after a Manhattan goal at 6:23, Kelly responded under a minute later (5:35) to give the Hawks a 14-5 advantage entering the final 15:00.

Blewitt (14:36) and Kelly (11:40) didn’t waste any time extending that lead before redshirt freshman attackman Michael Major (Holy Ghost Prep) scored back-to-back goals (8:12, 4:13) to get SJU to its 17th and 18th goals of the day.

For the game, Saint Joseph’s held a 40-31 edge in shots, including a 23-10 advantage in the first half, and battled for 35 ground balls compared to Manhattan’s 26. With a slew of penalty calls against the Crimson and Gray, the Jaspers saw multiple extra-man opportunities, but SJU’s defensive unit held Manhattan to just 1-for-7 in EMOs, including a perfect 0-for-4 fourth quarter.

The Hawks went 16-for-27 in face-off possessions, once again led by Danny Manning’s dominance at the X; the senior went 13-for-18 to go with three ground balls.

Army 14, Lafayette 4

Scott McAvoy (Wyomissing) had two goals for the Leopards (0-5). Conor Glancy (Malvern Prep) scored once for Army (4-1).

Marist 11, Drexel 7

Robert Frazee and Cole Shafer each scored three goals, but the Dragons dropped their fourth-straight loss to open the season. The Dragons fought back from a four-goal deficit in the second half to make it a one-goal game late in the third quarter, but could not get any closer. Marist is now 4-1 after the win.
