From US Lacrosse

The two schools where National Lacrosse Hall of Fame coach Bill Tierney won national championships as a head coach, the University of Denver and Princeton University, will play a fall exhibition game at the new US Lacrosse headquarters on the field named in his honor.

The men’s lacrosse teams from Denver and Princeton will meet at 2 pm on Saturday, October 15 on William G. Tierney Field in the first game played between two college teams at the new field. Tickets for the game are $8, with proceeds benefitting the U.S. National Teams Program, and can be purchased at http://shop.uslacrosse.org

Tierney, entering his eighth season as the head coach at Denver, has led the Pioneers to a record of 96-28, including the NCAA championship in 2015. Last year’s team went 13-3 and reached the NCAA tournament for the seventh consecutive season. Denver returns five All-Americans, including Tewaaraton finalist Connor Cannizzaro.

Prior to taking over the Denver position, Tierney was the head coach at Princeton, leading the Tigers to six national championships (1992, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2001). He led the United States to the FIL World Championship in 1998 and was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2002.

Princeton is led by new head coach Matt Madalon, who is in his first full year as the head coach and fourth year on the coaching staff with the Tigers. Madalon led Princeton to a 3-2 record in five games as the interim head coach last season. The Tigers return four players who earned All-Ivy League honors a year ago, including All-American midfielder Zach Currier.

The naming of Tierney Field was a part of the National Campaign for Lacrosse, a $15 million capital campaign funded by private donors, which helped result in the construction of new headquarters for US Lacrosse and financial support for US Lacrosse programs focused on increasing opportunity for play and safety initiatives.

(Note: Capacity for games at Tierney Field is 1,500, inclusive of bleacher seating for 500. All tickets are general admission, and seating is first-come, first-served. Fans may bring one collapsible camping chair per person for grass/hillside areas.)
