High School: Allentown Central Catholic HS

League: Eastern Pennsylvania Conference (EPC)

Coach: Dan Dolphin, 12th year, career record 161-65

Last year’s record: 17-5. 2nd in the EPC, Won District XI 2A title for second consecutive year. Lost to Bishop Shanahan in state quarterfinals.

Key Returnees: Matt Scandone, Sr., attack (20 goals and 16 assists), Todd Gloss, Sr. midfield (24 goals, 12 assists), Justin Pasquale, Sr. (12 goals 9 assists), Joe Pasquale, Sr., defense; Nolan Barr, Sr. Goalie (5.8 goals against average); Will Shimer, Jr. Defense, Liam Gill, Jr. Defense, Will Alderman, Jr. Midfield, Jack McGorry, Soph. midfield, Tyler Schifko, Soph. midfield, Louie Baloh, jr. Midfield.

Others to watch: Sr. midfielder Mike Hilliard, Fr. Chuck Kaczynski, Fr. Ben Scandone, Fr. Mike Driscoll, Fr. Aiden Carroll and Soph. Goalie Davis Ike

Coach’s outlook for 2019 season: “Our offense was decimated by graduation. We are going to be a very young team. At times, you will see 4 Freshmen on the defensive end of the field. Only 3 or 4 seniors will see significant playing time, so we will be playing a bunch of underclassmen. How quickly they mature on the field will be the barometer for how well the team does. Our strength will be on the defensive end of the field this year. The Defense will have to carry us until the offense matures as the season progresses. If all goes well, we should have a shot at playing for the District XI 2A title again this year. “

College roundup: Cabrini falls to York, 11-7; La Salle women triumph

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 3/22/19
From Press Releases

The Cabrini men’s lacrosse team could not overcome its slow start, as it suffered its first loss of the season with tonight’s 11-7 loss at No. 6 York College of PA.

The defeat snapped the Cavaliers season-opening seven game win streak, while the host Spartans improved to 8-1.

Junior Mike Gerzabek (Springfield-Delco) led the Blue and White with three goals, while classmate Tyler Kostack (Marple Newtown) paired a goal and three helpers. Senior Bill Morgan (Marple Newtown) also marked the scoring column twice.

Junior Tommy DeLuca marked career highs with seven caused turnovers and nine ground balls to go with an assist, while seniors Nick Vass and Sean Wagner scooped three ground balls each.

Senior goaltender Riley White (Plymouth Whitemarsh) suffered the loss despite making 13 saves, one of his season high.

The Cavaliers found themselves in a deep first half hole, as the club could not find its rhythm on either side of the pitch. Despite recording 17 first half shots, Cabrini could not solve York goaltender Jack Michael. The Blue and White also committed eight of its 13 turnovers and completed just 7-11 clear opportunities in teh first and second quarters.

Meanwhile, the Spartans took full advantage, scoring three goals in both the first and second quarters to carry a comfortable 6-0 lead into the halftime break.

Morgan finally put the Cavaliers on the board midway through the third period after a Kostack feed. The momentum was gone quickly, as York responded with two goals in the next 56 seconds.

Gerzabek added an unassisted tally late in the third, but again the Spartans had an answer, scoring twice in the final two minutes of the quarter, extending their lead to 10-2 with just 15 minutes to play.

Cabrini finally found its game in the final period, outshooting York 11-6, the only period in which the Blue and White attempted more shots than the host.

The increased shot attempts paid dividends on the scoreboard, as the Cavaliers rattled off five unanswered goals to pull within 10-7 on sophomore Evan Trizonis’ (Garnet Valley) goal with 3:09 to play.

Unfortunately, it would be the Cavaliers’ final shot on goal, as York sealed the win with a final late goal.

Cabrini’s 38 shots, 27 ground balls and nine caused turnovers ranked among the team’s lowest outputs of the 2019 season, while its 3-21 performance at the faceoff spot marked the team’s fewest faceoff wins since March 1, 2015, when it went 3-18 in a 10-9 loss at Lynchburg.

Thomas Pfeiffer anchored the Spartans’ attack with three goals and four assists, while Hunter Davis and Eban Ordakowski added two goals each. Jake Hvazda (Spring-Fprd) had a goal and two assists and Brendan McGrath (Central Bucks South) scored once. Michael matched White with 13 saves in the York cage.

The road will get no easier for the Cavaliers, as they will play host to No. 1 Salisbury University (8-0) on Wednesday night. The opening faceoff is slated for 7pm at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

Women’s D1

La Salle 13, GW 7

Sophomore Maddie Dachowski (Pennridge) tallied four goals and classmates Bridget Ruskey (Middle Twp, NJ) and Annina Iacobucci (Villa Maria Academy) each had a goal and two assists for the Explorers.

The game served as the Atlantic 10 opener for both schools, and moves the Explorers to 3-5 overall while the Colonials fall to 2-7 with the loss.

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 3/23/19
From Press Release

No. 19 Penn ventured north to Ithaca and stunned No. 8 Cornell, 16-15, to improve to 2-0 in the Ivy League.

Adam Goldner (Malvern Prep) was the hero, netting the game-winning goal with 17.9 seconds remaining after a staunch defensive stand from the Red and Blue at the other end.

The Quakers trailed, 7-2, in the second quarter but patiently worked their way back into the game as Tyler Dunn led the way with five goals. Penn still faced a 13-10 deficit with 11:25 to play, but scored the next four to take its first lead with 4:42 to play. The two teams combined for six goals in the final 5:04, but four of those came off Penn sticks as the Quakers toppled a Top-10 opponent.

Notes To Know…
Penn is now 2-3 against Top-25 opponents this season, adding this win to a win over then-No. 11 Villanova. All three of Penn’s losses in 2019 have come to Top-5 opponents.
Tyler Dunn tied his career high with five goals, and set his career high with six points. Dunn added five ground balls, giving him 15 over the last three games.
Goldner finished with four goals and give points. He has scored 2+ goals in all seven games this season, and has five points in each of his last three games.
Sam Handley had three goals and five points. He has tallied 24 points over his last five games.
Kyle Gallagher was 20-for-32 on faceoffs, his third game this season with 20+ wins.
Penn’s four-game winning streak is its longest since winning eight in a row in 2014.

Spence brothers (@sprlax), Gaffney (Lenape) lead Lehigh to 15-8 triumph over Navy

From Press Release

Trailing 6-4 early in the third quarter, the No. 15 Lehigh men’s lacrosse team ended the game on an 11-2 run to give the Mountain Hawks their fifth straight victory, a 15-8 triumph at Navy on Saturday afternoon at Navy Marine-Corps Memorial Stadium.

The win marks the 100th in Kevin Cassese’s head coaching career, all coming at Lehigh. In his 12th year, Cassese is the fastest coach in program history to reach the milestone, and just the second overall. Lehigh’s seven-goal win marked its largest-ever margin of victory at Navy, and second largest overall in the 41 all-time games between the two schools, a series that dates back to 1910.

With the win, the Mountain Hawks improve to 6-3. They are 4-0 in Patriot League play for a second straight season. Lehigh’s five-game winning streak is the program’s longest since 2013.

“Once again, I was proud of the effort and resilience our team displayed today,” said Cassese. “Adversity, mainly by way of injury, continues to hit us and we continue to adapt and overcome. It’s a testament to my assistant coaches, our captains and our upperclassmen.”

Senior Lucas Spence (Springfield-Delco) led the offense with six points behind four goals and two assists. Since his return to the lineup earlier this month, Spence has 25 points (15 goals, 10 assists) in five games, scoring multiple goals in all five contests, including four hat tricks. Included for Spence was one of the goals of the year, not only for Lehigh, but arguably all of NCAA Lacrosse.

Junior Conor Gaffney (Lenape) finished 17-of-26 facing off. After winning just 5-of-10 in the second half, he won 12-of-16 in the second, putting together another spectacular performance. Sophomore James Spence (Springfield-Delco) was stellar in goal, making a career-high tying 17 saves for the second time in the last three games. During Lehigh’s five-game winning streak, Spence has stopped 62-of-101 shots sent his way (61.4 percent).

Senior Tristan Rai added four points via two goals and two assists while classmates Mickey Fitzpatrick and Alexander Tumminello each had two goals apiece. Freshman Tommy Schelling posted a career-high three points (two goals, one assist). Junior Crew Cintron tied a career high with two points (one goal, one assist). Senior Craig Chick helped lead the defense with three groundballs and a caused turnover. Tumminello and junior Erik DiGirolamo (Parkland) each caused a turnover as well.

“I thought Navy got the better of us in the first half; they were bringing the fight to us and winning most of the one-on-one matchups, including the 50/50 ground balls,” said Cassese. “I thought we got tougher in the second half, recommitted to the ground ball and tough plays between the restraining lines, and it helped us go on a big run in the third quarter.”

Navy goalie Ryan Kern (Salesianum School) had 10 saves.

From Press Release

The host Philadelphia Wings recovered from a 3-0 deficit and earned a 13-8 win over the New England Black Wolves Saturday before 11,988 at the Wells Fargo Center.

Kevin Crowley (Fusion Co-Founder, Shipley assistant coach) had three goals for the second consecutive week and led with eight points, while Matt Rambo (La Salle, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy assistant) and Josh Currier each contributed two goals and two assists and Kiel Matisz chipped in five assists. It was Philadelphia’s third win of the season and second over New England.

Tyle Digby scored 49 seconds into the game to give New England the early 1-0 lead, but the Wings scored the next four goals – Blaze Riorden, Currier and Liam Patten scored in the first, and Jordan Hall tallied 3:37 into the second. Stephan Leblanc scored two in a row for New England to close the score to 4-3, but the Wings then ended the half on another 4-0 run that included two goals from Rambo and a goal apiece from Crowley and Vaughn Harris. That made it 8-3 at halftime.

The teams exchanged goals throughout the third quarter – Joe Resetarits had a pair and Digby added another, while Frank Brown and Crowley tallied for the Wings as the score climbed to 10-6 in favor of Philadelphia.

Currier scored 4:43 into the fourth quarter to make it an 11-6 game, after which the Black Wolves got one back from Digby to close within four at 11-7 with just over nine minutes to play. But the Wings held off New England until there were less than four minutes left; Resetarits scored with 3:52 remaining, which Crowley answered just under two minutes later to make it 12-8. Anthony Joaquim finished things off with an empty-netter in the final minute.

Doug Buchan made 55 saves to earn the win, while Doug Jamieson absorbed the loss with 37 stops.

Coach’s outlook for 2019 season: “Our offense was decimated by graduation. We are going to be a very young team. At times, you will see 4 Freshmen on the defensive end of the field. If all goes well, we should have a shot at playing for the District XI 2A title again this year.”

McGlone, Leonard, Whelan highlight @THEDUKESLC 20-Year Anniversary All-Time Midfielders

From Press Release

In the continuing celebration of the Duke’s Lacrosse Club’s 20th Anniversary All Time Team, directors recognized the All-Time Midfielders (see all-time Attackmen) as well as other significant offensive players who deserve recognition because of their outstanding contributions to the program.

From left, Bill McGlone, Greg Leonard, Ricky Whelan

Many players further blossomed in their college or pro careers, but the focus is on how they performed during the course of their Duke’s Club career. It is a daunting enough task to be fair with so many great players to review from the 20-year history, so here they are.

First Team Middies:
Leading off is the late Ricky Whelan. Ricky was and still is the heartbeat for everything that Duke’s Lacrosse represents. He is remembered every year through the Ricky Whelan Fall Clinics and was one of the toughest, strongest and talented middies to come out of the Duke’s Lacrosse Program and Pennsylvania High School Lacrosse in general. He was an All-American at Episcopal Academy before matriculating to Brown University. His legacy will live on forever in our hearts and minds.

The next 1st Teamer to highlight was Greg Leonard.
Leonard was the antithesis of the “Big Bull” middies who took over games with his sheer power and strength. He had the Unique ability to run down hill through and over defenders but was also a smooth and gifted lefty shooter who took over games with big plays in big moments.
Leonard played at Marple Newtown before playing his college career at Loyola University.

The last player highlighted on the First Team is Bill McGlone. If ever the term, “The Natural” applied to a player, it would be McGlone. He was laid back yet fiery. He was relaxed yet a powder keg waiting to be lit. He was just a very gifted and dynamic and a gig game player who led Ridley to multiple state State Championships and then excelled and was an All-American at Maryland. He went onto play professionally and simply was impactful at every Level.

The additional First Teamers are :
Andrew Mackrides, Malvern Prep/Penn State; Stevie Hill, Ridley/Drexel/Cabrini; Chris Schiller, Duke’s Adult/Penn State; Trevor Walker, Episcopal Academy/Georgetown; Dan Woods, Duke’s Adult/Springfield-Delco/Penn State; Joe McCallion, Haverford School/Penn; Mike Sutton, St. Augustine Prep/Penn State; Pete Schwartz, La Salle/Harvard; Ray Vandegrift, Penn Charter/St. Joseph’s; Vinny DeAngelo, Ridley/Hofstra; Sean Coleman, La Salle/Harvard; Kevin “Special K” Kaminski, Strath Haven/Delaware.

Honorable Mention:
Curtis Zappala, Episcopal Academy/Originally signed with Maryland; Marc Mackrides, Penncrest/Whittier; Tim Muir, Episcopal Academy/Johns Hopkins; Forry Smith, Haverford School/Johns Hopkins; Mikey Drake, Salesianum School/Notre Dame; Andrew Pettit, Tower Hill/Lehigh; Henry Blynn, Haverford School/Brown; Kevin Forster, La Salle/Maryland/St. Joseph’s; Kyle Long, Springfield-Delco/Maryland; Joey Jones, Abington; Rich Rambo, Abington/Hofstra/Rutgers; Mike Vandegrift, Abington/Penn State; Conrad Ridgway, La Salle/Penn State; Brad Loizeaux, Tatnall School/ Hofstra; Matt Moore, Garnet Valley/Virginia; Dan Kinek, Emmaus/Michigan; Adam Goldner, Malvern Prep/Penn; Chase Stewart, Downingtown/Gettysburg; Chris Gannett, Downingtown/Penn State; Eric Gartner, Villanova.

Next: Goalies and Face-Off Specialists

Greg Leonard
Bill McGlone
Ricky Whelan

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 3/25/19

The HEADstrong Lacrosse Club is excited to announce its 2019 Summer Camp Series, with two camps located in Swedesboro and Lower Township, N.J. Aimed toward any lacrosse player looking to elevate his or her game, these camps will also provide a platform for each athlete to be empowered to make a difference in their communities through their experiences.

“Our Nick aspired to be an educator, coach, and counselor, and that burning desire to positively influence the community was only heightened during his battle with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma,” said Cheryl Colleluori, President of the HEADstrong Foundation and Nick’s mom.

“That was the driving force behind him inspiring athletes around the country with the HEADstrong Foundation. Our summer camp series is a tremendous way to share the invaluable lessons that he taught us both on and off the field. Our staff not only played at the highest levels, but like Nick, believe that giving back to the community is one of the most important things in life. These camps allow HEADstrong to help those who are dealing with the same hardships and realities of cancer that we went through with Nick.”

HEADstrong will host the following camps (links to register and more information can be found below):

Swedesboro: June 24-28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Locke Avenue Park (58 Locke Avenue; ages 7-15 only).
Lower Township: July 15-18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Freeman S. Douglas Jr. Memorial Park (676 Route 9).

The experience of the HEADstrong camps are shaped by the outstanding and dedicated staff, led by camp director, HEADstrong Foundation Vice President and Nick’s brother Michael Colleluori. Garnering CAA Rookie of the Year honors during his freshman campaign, Michael Colleluori was an All-American at Hofstra and went on to play professionally after his collegiate career.

HEADstrong Lacrosse camps aim to elevate each athlete’s game, whether they’re new to the sport or more experienced. A 10-to-1 camper-to-counselor ratio gives players individualized attention and a higher amount of quality reps while also focusing on individual, group and team lacrosse skills in a positive, high energy atmosphere.

Players will learn the fundamentals of dodging, passing, catching, shooting, individual defense, goalie play and face-off technique. Athletes will also learn team offense, defense, riding, clearing and transition play. There will be appearances from current and former college and professional players, and campers will receive a limited edition HEADstrong tank top, HEADstrong shoelaces, a HEADstrong lanyard, and a HEADstrong sticker, with the opportunity to win even more prizes.

Proceeds from the camp will support the HEADstrong Foundation’s Nick’s House, a family home in Swarthmore, Pa., that provides complimentary lodging to families seeking cancer treatment in the region.
