From Press Release
The University of Delaware played well for most of the afternoon in its men’s lacrosse home opener Friday afternoon, but Mt. St. Mary’s scored three goals in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to take control and moved on to the 14-11 victory at chilly Delaware Stadium.
Delaware (0-2), which opened the season with a 13-5 setback at Bucknell last Saturday, held the lead for most of the day and took a 10-9 advantage into the final stanza before the Mountaineers rose up to take control with five fourth-quarter goals.
Blue Hen senior midfielder Steve DeLargy led the Hens with three goals while junior midfielder Will Hirschmann added two goals and junior attackman added a goal and two assists.
Evan Gormley led Mt. St. Mary’s with four goals while Bubba Johnson (Caesar Rodney, DE) had three scores and an assist. Midfielder Mike Pascali (La Salle) had two groundballs and added a groundball and Bennett Zaba (Holy Ghost Prep) had a caused turnover.

The game was originally scheduled to be played Saturday but was moved up one day due to forecasts of negative wind chills. Friday’s game was played under cloudy skies with 25-degree temperatures and a light wind.
After the teams played to a 4-4 tie after one quarter, Delaware took a 7-5 advantage into halftime as the Hens scored three straight goals in the final 8:51of the second period, including a goal by Major with 41 seconds remaining.
Delaware built its biggest lead of the day at 9-6 on goals by Campbell Parker and Connor Frisina 41 seconds apart in the third stanza before three straight goals by Mt. St. Mary’s tied the score at 9-9. Hirschmann scored for Delaware with 1:42 left in the stanza to give UD a 10-9 advantage heading into the final frame.
But the final quarter was all Mt. St. Mary’s as the Mountaineers scored three goals in the first 1:46 on tallies by Mike Moynihan, Lamon, and Gormley and then made it four straight goals on a tally Johnson with 8:19 remaining to take control at 13-10.
“It’s tough, our guys worked really hard, but we need to step up and make plays,” said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw. “When we were ahead by a couple of goals in the beginning of the second half I don’t think there was any letdown, and credit to them, they made plays, but on the defensive end we have to step up and keep working hard to make the right plays.
“Everybody fought hard, we just didn’t make the plays when we had to. We have a young team with several new players at different spots so we will be growing as the season goes on and I think we’ll have success as we continue.”
