Philly grad men’s college roundup: Pontrello, Pifani, Kelly lead UNC; Wozniak, Zebrowski, Hilburn pace BU

The 2016 version of the University of North Carolina men’s lacrosse team opened its season in impressive style Saturday afternoon, blasting Michigan 20-10 before a crowd of 2,006 fans at Fetzer Field on a sunny and chilly afternoon.

UNC’s restyled starting attack got five points each from senior Steve Pontrello (St. Augustine Prep, four goals), junior Luke Goldstock and sophomore Chris Cloutier as the Tar Heels led 10-6 at halftime and then broke the game open by scoring the first seven goals of the second half.

Austin Pifani (Abington) had four groundballs and a caused turnover to lead the UNC defense.

Carolina had a 20-14 edge in the face-off circle with junior Stephen Kelly winning 12 of 21 and freshman Charles Kelly (Malvern Prep) going 7 for 12.

For Michigan, Stefan Bergman (La Salle) and Chase Young (St. Joseph’s Prep) each had a groundball and a caused turnover while Nick DiCaprio (St. Augustine Prep) and Dan Kinek (Emmaus) each had a groundball.

BU 9, Providence 5

Ryan Hilburn (Malvern Prep) notched a goal and an assist while junior Greg Wozniak (Holy Ghost Prep) collected seven ground balls and tied classmate Craig Zebrowski (Salesianum School) in caused turnovers with three.

Navy 10, Air Force 6

TJ Hanzsche (Malvern Prep) had an assist, two groundballs and a caused turnovers for the Middies.

Alex Warden (Garnet Valley) had two caused turnovers for Air Force on defense.

Ohio State 8, Furman 7

Jon Vandenberg (Garnet Valley) had two caused turnovers and a groundball for Furman.
