From Press Release

A pair of Lehigh men’s lacrosse alums were selected in Wednesday’s Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft as goaltender Matt Poillon was picked by the Atlanta Blaze and defenseman Ty Souders went to the Ohio Machine. In addition, former Lehigh assistant coach Tom Compitello was selected by the Boston Cannons.

The Supplemental Draft consists of 12 rounds, allowing each team one selection from the player pool per round until they reach a maximum of 35 players. At the end of last season, each team selected a protected roster of 23 players. Any players who were not placed on a protected roster were automatically registered into the player pool.

Poillon was selected in the eighth round (64th overall) by expansion franchise Atlanta. Originally selected by the New York Lizards in last season’s MLL Collegiate Draft, Poillon was a three-time All-American who finished his Lehigh career with a stellar 40-16 record, 7.75 goals against average and .571 save percentage. As a freshman, Poillon went 14-3 with a 6.75 GAA and .597 save percentage. He was named the Patriot League Goalie of the Year and an honorable mention All-American. Poillon was Goalie of the Year once again as a sophomore before earning All-Patriot League and All-America honors for a third straight season as a junior. In 2015, Poillon was named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List for a third consecutive year, lacrosse’s equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. He did not see any game action for the Lizards this past summer.

Drafted 22nd overall by Denver in the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft, Souders was then selected by Ohio in last year’s Supplemental Draft. Souders was on the Machine roster early last season, but did not see any game action. He was once again selected by Ohio on Wednesday in the 13th round (115th overall). Lehigh’s highest-ever collegiate draft pick, Souders wrapped up a decorated career in 2014, earning All-Patriot League honors on two occasions and All-America three times. He helped quarterback one of the nation’s top defenses as the Mountain Hawks emerged among the nation’s best defensive units in Souders’ tenure highlighted by 2012 when Lehigh finished second nationally, allowing just 6.75 goals per game. The Emmaus High School graduate ended his career with 139 groundballs and 56 caused turnovers.

Also selected on Wednesday was Compitello, a Lehigh assistant coach during the Mountain Hawks’ two championship seasons of 2012 and 2013. A former Stony Brook standout, Compitello’s career was highlighted by a 37-goal, 35-assist junior season. He was selected in the 14th round (123rd overall) in Wednesday’s Supplemental Draft, rejoining the original team that drafted him (Boston). Compitello is now an assistant coach at Bryant University.

The current Mountain Hawks are hard at work this fall preparing for their 2016 season, which begins on Feb. 6 vs. NJIT. The nonleague schedule is highlighted by road games at Duke and Princeton and a home showdown against Cornell.
