Saint Joseph’s University athletics is mourning the loss of former men’s lacrosse coach Pat Cullinan, who passed away on Thursday at 58 after a lengthy fight with cancer.

Mr. Cullinan was the third head coach in the history of the Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse program, guiding the Hawks for seven seasons from 2005 to 2011. He led Saint Joseph’s to an appearance in the 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship, where they fell one win short of an NCAA Tournament berth. In 2006, the coach piloted the Hawks’ turnaround from the previous year’s record, thus earning him the 2006 MAAC Coach of the Year award.
“We are truly saddened by Pat’s passing,” said SJU director of athletics Don DiJulia.
“He and his family were fully engaged in the Hawk Hill community during his time here. Pat not only advanced our lacrosse program, but represented Saint Joseph’s in a first-class manner and worked tirelessly to enhance the student-athlete experience. He will be missed.”

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the viewing on Monday, Oct. 26 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at DellaVechia Funeral Home in West Chester, Pa. (410 North Church Street). A viewing will also be held on Tuesday, October 27 at 9:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in West Chester (130 West Miner Street), which will be followed by a service at 11 a.m.
During his coaching career at Saint Joseph’s, Mr. Cullinan saw his players earn nine All-MAAC selections and 11 MAAC All-Academic Team honors.
Prior to coaching at Saint Joseph’s, Mr. Cullinan was the head coach at West Chester University, where he led the program to the ECAC Division II Championship and garnered NYCAC Coach of the Year honors twice. A 1979 graduate and two-sport standout at Lebanon Valley College, he also started the lacrosse program at Glen Mills High School. He served the last four years as an assistant at Downingtown East.
Mr. Cullinan is survived by his wife, Donna, and their four children. His sons, Sean and Scott, played for him at Saint Joseph’s, while his daughter Meghan was a member of the Hawks’ women’s lacrosse team and his daughter Sarah played lacrosse at Elizabethtown College.
