Canada defended its title, defeating the Iroquois, 12-8, in the Gold medal game at The Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Indoor Lacrosse Championship (WILC) Sunday at the Onondaga Nation, capital of the Iroquois Confederacy, in Syracuse, N.Y.
Team USA cruised by Israel, 15-4, to claim the Bronze.
The final was held in front of a Federation of International Lacrosse indoor championship game record of 10,421 fans at the Carrier Dome, most of which were purple-clad and loud in support of the opposing Iroquois Nationals.
Canada is a perfect 23-0 in senior FIL indoor competition, with four gold medals.
University of Delaware graduate Curtis Dickson finished with a game-high four goals including an empty-netter with a minute left, but the key sequence came early in a span of 42 seconds early in the fourth quarter. Defender Steve Priolo and Stephan Leblanc each notched their first goals of the game to stake Canada to a three-goal lead with 9:56 left.
Meanwhile, the U.S. dominated the entire game vs. Israel. Highlighted by four Kevin Buchanan goals and five Powell assists, the Americans held possession and capitalized on its plentiful chances.
“This certainly wasn’t the game we wanted to play in today,” 39-year-old American Casey Powell said to lacrosse magazine, “but I’m proud of the effort we put forward.”
Defenseman Brett Manney (NXT Showcase Director, Holy Ghost Prep, Delaware) had three loose balls and backup goalie Chris Collins (Drexel assistant coach, Delaware alum) had five saves (no goals allowed) and a loose ball.
For Israel, Kyle Bergman (Drexel grad) had two goals and seven loose balls while Dan Deckelbaum (Elevated Lacrosse, assistant at Avon Grove, West Chester youth director, Delaware grad) had six loose balls.
