From Press Release
Continuing his impressive freshman-year success, Lehigh men’s lacrosse sophomore Conor Gaffney (Lenape-NJ, Duke’s LC) has been named Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week, as announced on Monday. After finishing eighth nationally with a 61.0 faceoff percentage in 2016, Gaffney won 18-of-25 draws in Saturday’s season opener vs. NJIT to win his fourth-career Faceoff Specialist of the Week honor and eight-career Patriot League weekly award.
Gaffney was also named the league’s Rookie of the Week four times last season. On Saturday, he won 12 of his final 13 faceoffs on the day, including 11-of-12 in the second half. He helped the Mountain Hawks control second-half possession and hold a dominant 30-8 edge in second-half shots, on their way to a 13-8 victory, Lehigh’s eighth season-opening victory in its last nine tries. Gaffney’s 18 wins on the day was one shy of tying a career high.
Gaffney is coming off a freshman season which saw him win 139-of-228 faceoffs (61.0 percent) with 96 groundballs.
The Mountain Hawks are set to hit the road next Saturday, Feb. 10 when they travel to Mercer. Opening faceoff in Macon, Ga. is set for 3:30 p.m.
