In order to be considered for the prestigious honor, the student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 and be a significant contributor to their team both on and off the field. The duo are the first recipients of the award for the Quakers since 2015 when Matt McMahon received the same honor.

Gayhardt concluded his collegiate career as a unanimous First-Team All-Ivy selection during a season where he captained the Red and Blue. A stalwart on defense, Gayhardt started in all 13 games for Penn this season and tallied 22 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. A Second-Team All-Ivy honoree in 2016, Gayhardt collected a career total of 69 ground balls, 28 caused turnovers, and three points (2g, 1a) in 47 games.

Persky finished his senior campaign as an Honorable Mention All-Ivy selection where he appeared in all 13 games with 11 starts on defense. He picked up 14 ground balls and caused seven turnovers on the season, and finished his collegiate career playing in 44 games with 21 starts in addition to picking up 44 ground balls and causing 21 turnovers.

The Quakers concluded 2017 with a 7-6 overall record and 3-3 mark in Ivy League play. The Red and Blue entered the Ivy League Tournament as the No. 4 seed and fell in quadruple overtime to Yale, 13-12, who earned the NCAA bid following their win of the conference tournament.
