The Cabrini men’s lacrosse team received 17 All-Colonial States Athletic Conference awards.

Head coach Steve Colfer received his 11th CSAC Coach of the Year honor, while senior Evan Downey repeated as CSAC Player of the Year and freshman Jake Klein was named CSAC Rookie of the Year.

The Blue and White were well represented on the All-CSAC First Team, as Jordan Krug (Cherokee), Timmy Brooks (Haverford School), Joey Hoey (Springfield-Delco), Tommy DeLuca, Riley Michaels (Pottsgrove), Steve Halko (Springfield-Delco), Bobby Cressman and Matt Nestler joined Downey and Klein.

Tyler Kostack and Nick Vass were named to the Second Team, while Mike Gerzabek received Honorable Mention. Colin McGavin was named to the CSAC Sportsmanship Team.

Colfer has led the No. 10 Cavaliers to 13-3 overall record, with wins over No. 20 Lynchburg, No. 12 Ursinus, No. 14 Stevenson and No. 1 Salisbury. With another perfect 7-0 mark in CSAC play, the Blue and White also own an NCAA record 108 game CSAC win streak.

Despite filling the starting line-up with underclassmen, the Cavaliers have made an impact on the NCAA statistical rankings. The Blue and White in the top 15 in 10 different categories, including man-up offense (#3-.561), scoring offense (#9-16.19), man-down defense (#9-.843) and scoring margin (#7-8.75).

This is the second consecutive Player of the Year honor and fourth All-CSAC award for Downey, who ranks fourth on the team with 41 points, 25 goals and 45 ground balls. The senior recorded seven multi-goal games including three goals in games against Haverford, Lynchburg and SUNY Cortland.

Named a First Team All-American by Inside Lacrosse Magazine, Downey has been at his best against the nation’s top teams. In five games against top 20 opponents, the senior has posted 10 goals, four assist and 129 ground balls.

Klein was named the league’s top rookie after posting 21 assists, second on the team. The freshman also tallied 34 points and 13 goals.

Despite his youth, Klein came up big in big games, pairing 11 assists and six goals against top 20 teams, including a nine point effort against SUNY Cortland and the game-winning overtime goal against No. 1 Salisbury.

Krug led the Cavaliers with 58 points and 44 goals, while recording 14 assists and 26 ground balls. Among the sophomore’s 12 multi-goal games was a four goal, two assist and four ground ball effort against Salisbury.

Brooks’ 37 goals rank second on the team, while his 51 points are third. The sophomore posted nine multi-goal games, scoring at least 3 goals in eight outings, including a four goal effort against Stevenson.

Hoey claimed his third All-CSAC honor after securing 10 ground balls and causing 12 turnovers, while committing just two miscues.

DeLuca was named CSAC and ECAC Defensive Player of the Week this season, as he caused a team high 23 turnovers, including at least one in 11 games, including four against Salisbury.

Michaels boasted a .637 faceoff percentage and secured a team high 56 ground balls. The junior went 17-31 in five games against top 20 teams, including 11-17 against Salisbury.

This marks Halko’s second all-conference accolade, as the senior paired 22 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers in his return from a season injury in 2016. The senior added a pair of goal in Cabrini’s victory over Lynchburg.

Cressman won 21 of his 25 chances at the faceoff spot in CSAC competition and secured 27 ground balls. The rookie caused three miscues and scooped six ground balls against Centenary.

Nestler manned the crease and led the Cavaliers to 12 victories as a rookie. The freshman sported a 7.42 goals against average with 149 saves, including two that saves Cabrini’s win over Salisbury.
