Senior Matt Rambo (La Salle, Duke’s LC) tallied a career-high seven points (3G, 4A) and the Terrapin defense allowed just two second half goals as the No. 2 Maryland men’s lacrosse team defeated Saint Joseph’s, 16-8, Tuesday night.

Freshman Jared Bernhardt totaled four points and notched his first career hat trick, while senior Colin Heacock also had three goals and an assist. Sophomore Austin Henningsen had a great day at the faceoff X, going 18-for-24 (75%).
The result marked the eighth consecutive game with at least 13 goals for the Terps since 2016.
Leading 7-6 with less than 7:30 to play in the second quarter, Rambo ignited the Terps with back-to-back goals in a 58 second span. The two goals were the beginning of a 8-2 Maryland run the remainder of the game.
Junior attackmen Chris Blewitt and Jason Kelly (Salesianum) and senior midfielder Kevin Reidinger scored two goals apiece for the Hawks – making their season debut.
“Tough game tonight,” said head coach Taylor Wray. “I thought our guys were amped up and ready to play, but we didn’t get off to a great start defensively. It felt like we were very scrambled.
“Some of that is [Maryland] has some tremendous personnel on that squad. That’s a really good team that we played. I thought our guys played really hard but we need to be sharper in order to beat a team of that caliber.”
The Terrapin offense came out of the gates on fire, scoring five goals in the first frame to take an early 5-2 lead. Bernhardt found the back of the net twice, in addition to scores by Heacock, Dylan Maltz and Isaiah Davis-Allen. The goal was Davis-Allen’s first of the season.
After St. Joe’s scored a pair of goals to cut its deficit to one, 5-4, sophomore Louis Dubick fed Matt Neufeldt for a goal and then scored one of his own to put the Terps ahead, 7-4. Adam DiMillo also scored his first career goal in the second quarter.
Amidst Maryland’s mid-game run, the Terrapin defense clamped down to hold the Hawks scoreless for a stretch of 20:13. Goalkeeper Dan Morris made seven saves in the win.
Heacock scored a pair of goals at the beginning of the fourth quarter to secure the hat trick, while Colin Giblin tallied his first career goal with 3:59 remaining.
The Terrapin extra-man unit was superb in the game, scoring four goals on three opportunities.
Additionally, it was Rambo’s fifth straight game with at least six points. He has now tallied 47 points over his last eight games on 23 goals and 24 assists.
