Monmouth University men’s lacrosse senior goalkeeper Nick Hreshko (Warrington, PA / La Salle College HS) has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced Monday afternoon.
Hreshko backstopped Monmouth to its seventh-consecutive road victory with a career-high 15 saves in Monmouth’s victory over No. 16 Villanova, this past Saturday. Hreshko, behind Monmouth’s defensive unit, stifled the Wildcats’ potent offense by holding them to 10 goals on 49 shots, 25 of which were on goal. The senior’s 15 saves marked the fourth time in Monmouth history a goalie has stopped 15 shots and were the most since Garrett Conaway made 15 saves at Detroit on April 11, 2015.
The victory was Monmouth’s first ever against a nationally ranked opponent.
Monmouth travels to Hempstead, NY this Saturday, Feb. 18, for a 12 p.m. matchup with Hofstra.
Lehigh’s Gaffney wins another honor
Freshman faceoff specialist Conor Gaffney (Lenape-NJ) produced another strong performance for the Lehigh men’s lacrosse team Saturday at Jacksonville to win his second straight Patriot League Rookie of the Week award, as announced on Monday. His award comes one week after garnering both Rookie of the Week and Faceoff Specialist of the Week following his collegiate debut.
After dominating NJIT in the season opener, he followed it up by winning 12-of-24 faceoffs against Jacksonville, highlighted by winning 2-of-3 faceoffs in the second quarter and 4-of-7 in the fourth. He added seven groundballs in the game, a team high, and now has 23 groundballs on the season. He has won 67.4 percent of his faceoffs (31-of-46) this year, which is 10th best in the nation and fourth best for players who have played two games. Gaffney added a shot and a caused turnover on the day.
Gaffney and the 2-0 Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday when they take on defending national champion North Carolina. Opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
