Virginia men’s lacrosse head coach Lars Tiffany announced Friday that senior goalie Matt Barrett (Malvern Prep) has been suspended for the 2017 season due to violation of athletics department policy.
Barrett has started each of the 46 career games he’s played at Virginia. He owns a 27-19 career record between the pipes and his 469 career saves rank No. 9 all-time in the UVA record books. Barrett was a 2015 USILA second-team All-American and a 2015 All-ACC honoree.
Barrett was charged with possession of a Schedule II drug on Aug. 12 in Ocean City, MD.
Barrett started all 15 games and posted 137 saves for a Cavaliers team that went 7-8 in 2016. He was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week in the first week in April.
Barrett’s best season was in 2015 when he led the ACC with 12.20 saves per game (eighth nationally). Barrett also was a started as a freshman who he posted 149 saves.
At Malvern Prep, Barrett led Malvern Prep to the Inter-Ac League title in 2013 and earned All-American and All-Phillylacrosse.com First Team honors.
