From Press Release

The University of Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse team used an incredible performance from freshman goalie Reed Junkin and a solid second-half offensive performance to down Dartmouth, 11-4, Saturday at the Big Green’s Scully-Fahey Field.

The win was Penn’s third in a row, and the Quakers improved to 8-5 overall. They also finished the Ivy League portion of their season 4-2, the third time that has happened in the last six years (after it happened just once from 1990 to 2010, in 2006).

Junkin was a standout all day long, making 17 saves while allowing just four goals for an .810 save percentage. That was the difference on a day when Penn and Dartmouth tied in shots, 36-36.

Four different Penn players scored two goals each on Saturday: Simon Mathias, Pat Berkery, Reilly Hupfeldt (Haverford School) and long-stick defenseman Kevin Gayhardt (Episcopal Academy). Mathias also had two assists while Berkery added one. Senior Nick Doktor, who saw his 38-game point-scoring streak end on Tuesday at UMBC, had a goal and an assist on Saturday.

Penn led 2-0 just four minutes into the contest thanks to goals from Berkery (off an Alex Roesner feed) and sophomore long pole Connor Keating (Haverford School). Dartmouth got those back, as Jack Korzelius and Harrison Lane scored just 1:20 apart, but Berkery’s second goal of the day came only 13 seconds after Lane’s tally.

That started a five-goal run by the Quakers, though the goals were spread out over more than 33 minutes — Mathias had the only score in the second quarter, and then Doktor, Hupfeldt and Gayhardt scored during the second half of the third period. Dartmouth finally scored after being shut out for more than 34 minutes, Richie Loftus finishing an Evan Key feed, but it was 7-3 Penn after three.

Tyler Dunn quickly opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, just 10 seconds in, and after Loftus matched that goal the Quakers were able to close things out with the game’s last three tallies (Mathias, Gayhardt, Hupfeldt).

Penn will close out the regular-season portion of the campaign on Tuesday, as the Quakers host city rival Saint Joseph’s. Tuesday’s game will start at 7 p.m., and it will take place on Rhodes Field (Penn’s soccer field) as Franklin Field will be offline for Penn Relays.

Harvard 16, Princeton 12

Ryan Ambler (Abington) moved further into elite company in Princeton men’s lacrosse history and Gavin McBride (Haverford School) continued to score goals in bunches.

Unfortunately for both Tigers, they won’t have the opportunity to extend their seasons into the Ivy League tournament.

Ambler had a goal and four assists and McBride had four more goals, but Princeton fell 16-12 to Harvard in front of 2,213 at Harvard Stadium Saturday afternoon. The loss eliminated Princeton from Ivy League tournament contention, as the field became set with Brown, Yale, Penn and Cornell.

Ambler now has 75 goals and 91 assists in his career. He moved past Dave Tickner and Justin Tortolani to get to 10th place all-time in points at Princeton, and he moved past Charles Stillwell into seventh all-time in assists. He is also one of four Princeton players, along with Jon Hess, Tom Schreiber and Dave Heubeck, with at least 75 career goals and 90 career assists.
McBride’s four goals tied his career high and gave him 23 for the season, tied with Austin Sims for the team lead. McBride has at least three goals in each of his last four games and has at least one point in 27 straight games.

Harvard’s Keegan Michel won the opening face-off and scored eight seconds into the game. Princeton would never lead in the game, though it would be tied 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4 and for the last time at 7-7 on McBride’s fourth, which came with 3.3 seconds left in the first half.

Harvard went up 8-7 with 11:41 left in the third quarter, and it stayed that way for nearly 10 minutes. The Crimson then scored twice in the final 1:41 of the quarter, including Joe Lang’s goal wiith 10 seconds left, to make it 10-7. Harvard scored the first two of the fourth quarter to make it a five-goal game. Princeton scored five goals in the final 8:06 of the game but could not get closer than three.
