Bill Leahy could not have been happier – unless, of course, his La Salle team had actually beaten mighty Hill Academy on Friday.

Instead, Leahy was pleased that his Explorers gave North America’s top-ranked team probably its toughest game of the year in 12-10 home loss before a large crowd.

La Salle (9-2) outscored the Pride, 8-4, in the second half and got as close as 11-10 when Kevin Lacon (three goals) scored with 3:39 left. Hill (8-0) got an insurance goal with 1:30 to play when Cornell commit Jeff Teat (three goals, four assists) set up a goal with an incredible behind-the-back feed from his knees.

“”We played a great second half,” said Leahy, whose team fell behind 4-1 after one period and 8-2 at the half. “They were excellent, but we battled. I am Very proud of our boys.

“This is the closest anyone in the nation has played them. We were right there. They’re very impressive and when we made a mistake they capitalized. But I couldn’t have asked for more from our boys.”

Colin Cahill also scored three goals and Cody Mazurek had two goals and an assist for La Salle, while Anthony Giuliani won 14 of 26 face-offs.
