Henderson sophomore goalie Kyle Dampman knew that West Chester East presented a formidable opponent as he prepared for his first start Tuesday in the 5th Annual Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game.
“It definitely was intimidating,” said Dampman. “East is a very good team and Henderson had won the Drew Bauer game for the past 4 years. I had big shoes to fill from Eric Beren last year and I just knew I had to be there for my teammates.”

Dampman indeeed was ready for the challenge with nine saves, and along with the Henderson defense he helped the Warriors remain perfect in the Drew Bauer series with a 12-8 win at East.
Henderson improves to 3-2 (1-0 Ches-Mont) while East falls to 5-2, 1-1 in the league. The game – which honors the memory of Drew Bauer, who died five summers ago in a boating accident in the Sassafras River on the Chesapeake in Maryland. Drew played at WC East and was a popular and beloved coach for many years in the West Chester Youth and Keystone Games as well as a player on men’s teams in the county.
For the first time there were multiple players honored for the “Bauer Blue Collar Award.” That honor always goes to the player (or players) that exemplify the spirit Drew showed for the game. Dampman shared it with Henderson defenders Jason DePhillips, Cody Pascale and Nick Mascetti, but the defenders gave the award to Dampman (who received a composite shaft from True Lacrosse).
The Warriors defense helped stymie an East team that many thought had its best chance to topple Henderson (last done in 2008) in years. The Warriors outscored East 7-2 in the middle periods to take control after a 2-2 first-period tie. Dampman had several key saves in the first period to keep it even.
Also, Pascae and DePhillips contributed a goal apiece to help the offense. In all, nine players scored for Henderson as Joe Saulino led with two goals and an assist.

“What helped our defense work so well tonight was communication,” said Dampman. “Talking is the key, and just being there for each other when something bad happens.”
Jack phelan led East with three goals.
Dampman said he was honored to have been coached by Drew Bauer as a youth
“Drew Bauer had a big impacted in the West Chester area lacrosse community, and I had the honor of being coach by him at a younger age for West Chester Lacrosse all-stars,” said Dampman.
Drew would be proud.
