From Press Release
Former La Salle great and 2013 Phillylacrosse.com Player of the Year Matt Rambo (La Salle, Duke’s LC) scored three goals as No. 12 Maryland scored three straight third period goals to break a 5-5 tie and went on to defeat Drexel at Vidas Field, 12-8.
Robert Frazee scored four goals for Drexel in the loss.
Maryland led for the entire first half and scored the first goal of the third period, but Drexel (1-4) rallied to tie it. Frazee scored a man-up goal when he scored from the top of the box. Matthew Varian evened it at 5-5 when he came in from behind the net and beat the Maryland keeper. The Terrapins then scored three straight goals to take control of the contest.
Pat Young gave Maryland the lead and two minutes later Rambo scored his third, putting the Terrapins up by two. Tim Rotanz added another to give Maryland an 8-5 lead at the end of three.
Drexel was able to cut the deficit to two twice in the fourth quarter, but Maryland outscored Drexel 4-3 in the final 15 minutes to even its record at 2-2. Cole Shafer had two goals in the fourth quarter for Drexel and finished the day with four points. Colin Heacock scored three of his four goals down the stretch as Maryland rebounded from a 9-4 loss to No. 1 Notre Dame on Saturday in California.
Maryland scored the first two goals and never trailed in the game. Tim Rotantz opened the scoring three and a half minutes in. It was his first goal of the year. Less than two minutes later, the Terrapins went up by two when Rambo picked up a rebound off the post and beat Jimmy Joe Granito.
The Dragons got their initial goal with 8:54 left in the quarter. Cole Shafer set up Mason Pynn, who fired a left-handed shot in the cage making it 2-1. Maryland responded and scored two quick goals to go ahead 4-1. Pat Young and Rambo were the goal scorers and it looked like Maryland would be off to the races. However, Drexel got one of the goals back when CAA Co-Rookie of the Week Matthew Varian fed Robert Frazee in front for his first goal of the game as Drexel made it a two-goal game at the end of the first.
The second quarter saw just one goal scored, and that came when Frazee scored an unassisted goal midway through the quarter. Both teams had their chances, but the goalkeepers and defenses held. Maryland’s Austin Henningsen won a clean face-off and broke in alone but was stoned by Granito. The Dragons had four shots in the final two minutes as they tried to even it, but could not as the teams went to break with the Terrapins ahead, 4-3. Each team had 17 shots in the first half.
Nabil Akl won 12 of his 24 face-offs as Drexel had its best game at the “x” this season. Jimmy Joe Granito made five saves in goal for Drexel. The Dragons were outshot, 40-38. Kyle Bernlohr made nine saves in picking up the win.
